Yet another idea for an 8 team playoff

Jan 15, 2015, 7:44 AM

Power 5 conference champions (5 spots)
2 best (highest ranked, if ESPN would leave the rankings alone) non-champion teams get 2 at-large spots, with maximum of two total teams from the same conference in the playoff in a given year. This would at least put a limit on the SEC bias.

Here's where it gets different from any other scenario I have seen put forth to date.

The two highest ranked conference champions from the "other" conferences hold a play in game for the last spot. This would ensure, in some fashion, that those guys get a seat at the table every year, and as conference strengths ebb and flow, would always assure the best of them have a shot. The winner of that game would get in as the #8 seed. In this fashion, at least #1 would get a "reward" for being ranked #1, as they (at least on paper) would have by far the easiest first round game. Comments?

Good idea , as long as the play-in game is done early say latter December during the 3week lull as I call it . Then they have time to get ready for the upset bid..

I say keep the power 5 champions plus 3 at large bids to the highest ranked teams but still only two teams from any conference. You could have those other conference champions not even be ranked in the top 20. So I don't like that idea

8 would be great but someone will always gripe about who was left out

I know I'll get a little slack for this but I'm fine with not having a 2 team per conference restriction. I think all power 5 conference champions should get in, the highest ranked group of 5 team and then the next 2 highest ranked teams. If they are both from the same conference and one conference gets 3 then so be it. Let them prove their "superiority" on the field. If they lose, then the conference was overrated since they had the most chances to win and came away empty handed. This would cause the rankings to begin fixing themselves the following year. There will not be an overnight fix but it will help fix it. Not to mention, even if we had this system and the SEC got 3 teams in it this year, it would have been even more embarrassing for the conference when Bama, Miss St. and Ole Miss all lost and they wouldn't be playing for the trophy after having 3/8 of the participation. Just a personal opinion.

Just as an example for this year, the 8 teams would have been Alabama (SEC conf winner), Oregon (PAC conf winner), FSU (ACC conf winner), OSU (B1G conf winner), Baylor (Big 12 conf winner), Boise St. (Group of 5 selection), TCU (at large) and Miss St. (at large).

I would have been happy with that. Yes, Mich St. beat Baylor and would have been left out but that's the price you pay for not winning the conference. Someone will always be left out no matter the number.

The problem with just taking the highest ranked teams,

Jan 16, 2015, 7:28 AM

is that the same sort of crap that happened this year with Miss. State jumping 3 spots to leapfrog Mich. State , while neither one of them played a game, will become even more prevalent. No one will ever convince me that this was not a "Quid Pro Quo" for voting Ohio State into the final 4. I mean no disrespect to Ohio State by that, but I can hear the SEC leaners now, saying, if you want my vote for Ohio State, then we need another SEC team in one of the New Years 6 bowl games, how do we get there? I think we all know how that turned out. Anyone who thinks that kind of deal making did not go on, especially with a career politician in the room, is just being naive.
