Defenseless doesn’t matter when you lead with the crown. Leading with the crown against any player is targeting no matter what part of their body you hit.

It’s not where he hit him… it’s how he hit him by lowering his head and leading or launching with the crown.

That is textbook targeting.

The rule is to protect the guy delivering the hit as much as the guy getting hit. Hitting with the crown can cause things like basal skull fracture and neck fractures that all are death or paralysis. Granted it is a one in a million thing but that is the thought process.

Defenseless player, launch, hit with crown of helmet.

Those don't require a hit to the head of neck.

The rule is to protect the defender as much as the guy that gets hit.
