New Story: Swinney takes issue with Hyatt's "average" comment

Swinney takes issue with Hyatt's "average" comment

Mitch Hyatt thinks his play on the field this season has been average, and he thinks the play of the offensive line as a whole has been average. Head coach Dabo Swinney disagrees.

Dabo is so positive, but I think Hyatt is accurate as far...

Oct 20, 2016, 7:28 PM

the entire Oline.

The team is improving, BUT

Oct 20, 2016, 9:06 PM

I agree... Sometimes coaches cover up obvious problems without facing them UNTIL they are forced to by a loss. Remember when the Coach was denying the problems of the first 3 or 4 games as being completely the delusions of the fans, as he did last year as well. It makes me more nervous when I hear Dabo cover over the mistakes rather than facing them. Honest appraisal is the beginning of correction for most people. There wasn't any room between the tackles for running... the NCST defensive line were not being pushed off the line... and they pressured Watson even more than Louisville did... without loading the box any more than we do.

Look at Dabo's results , man .
Do you think you could cut him some slack based on what he has done the last 8 years ? He's earned the right to glaze over some faults and praise his players .

You're going to get blasted on here for that. We're 7-0 so everything is perfect

Oct 20, 2016, 10:02 PM [ in reply to The team is improving, BUT ]

And it's blasphemy to have any constructive comments.
I hope Dabo doesn't really believe this and that he and rest of the coaches are working on more that just ball control. Because even minus turnovers the team that played last Saturday would not win a playoff game in my opinion. Also, while you need to get the turnovers down it would be nice to display the line of scrimmage to be able to beat an Alabama even with a turnover.
I know we had some close games last year as well but this is not last year and our line of scrimmage play is not as good as last year to-date.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Do you really think the team's deficiencies are not being addressed?

Oct 20, 2016, 10:08 PM [ in reply to The team is improving, BUT ]

Of course they are! But do you really want Dabo to detail how and where we are deficient ... so our opponents can exploit them?!

Please! I don't have a problem with the coach glossing over our problem areas IN THE MEDIA! The team will work on improvements behind the scenes until these areas are strengths.

Please let the team make the appropriate corrections in the privacy of the team environment.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

what deficiencies?

Oct 21, 2016, 8:25 AM

I thought Dabo said there were none. So you're now calling Dabo a liar?

Let me enlighten you on a deep, dark secret: the other teams and coaches know EXACTLY what our weaknesses are. Boom, revolutionary concept I know but there it is.

Of course our OL has not played above average this year. It doesn't take anyone with an IQ of an egg to figure that out. Dabo is just being Dabo saying they have played great. Some people like the way he always dresses things up, some prefer the BV approach of reality.

In general, our offensive coaches seem to favor everything is sugarcanes and lollipops while the defensive coaches trend toward what is really happening (without being overly negative or calling out players ).

I assume Dabo feels his approach aids our recruiting, hopefully he doesn't think the fans are so stupid we can't see our shortcomings.

Oct 21, 2016, 7:06 AM [ in reply to The team is improving, BUT ]

My cousin is a Tech booster, involved deeply with them. He really respects Dabo for shielding his players. This is a perfect example of that. Dabo would rather take heat, than for it to land on one of his players. I agree with Mitch. The o-line hasn't been spectacular. They've already given up more sacks than last year at this point. I'm not sure what Gallman avg's are before first contact this year vs last year right now, but a couple of weeks ago it was a good bit lower. To be fair losing MacLain & Gore have really affected this group. I want to see a confident line, Nasty, blowing people off the ball. A clean pocket with plenty of time for Watson to throw. I hope we can get it all straight & make a Nat Champ run! We definitely have the talent! If we ever play a complete game, lookout!

Yep, I agree with him too

O-line has been VERY avg.

hyatt is right..the oline has under preformed so far***

Oct 20, 2016, 7:29 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yep

Oct 22, 2016, 7:46 AM

totally agree, totally.
So much talk before the season about the OL being one of
the best we've ever had, and it just hasn't happen...SO FAR.

I expect some possible changes need to be made, like:
Simpson over Hearn at LG/ Pollard getting more PT at RT.

Re: New Story: Swinney takes issue with Hyatt's "average" comment

Oct 20, 2016, 7:30 PM

Personally, I think that Hyatt was trying to motivate his fellow offensive linemen.
Sure, he knows how well he has played-sure, he knows that Clemson has only lost 1 game with him at left tackle.
But he also has set very high goals for himself and this team - where the best his expected.
I love when players say things like this.

Dabo...gotta love the guy, but

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

anyone else notice

Oct 20, 2016, 8:17 PM

Dabo's language has gotten saltier of late. By today's standards still quite PG-13 but still, he says words he did not used to say.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg2016_nascar_champ.gif flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I have noticed it as well...

Oct 20, 2016, 9:22 PM

...and not a big concern for me, but he used to use "darn" a lot instead of the other word. Maybe just a result of all the outside pressure being put on the team and coaches so far this year. Wouldn't want anyone else leading our young men though.

I'd go with Hyatt on this one...I think Gallman would too

Oct 20, 2016, 8:31 PM

Probably Watson as well...no room between the tackles and DW4 has been hurried on a majority of plays this year---thank goodness we don't have a protypical "Drop back, pocket passer" or we'd most definitely not be 7-0 right now. Give Dabo credit for trying to deflect heat off of Hyatt taking the blame, but you gotta keep it real.

Oct 20, 2016, 9:26 PM

The problem is we need to pound the rock. Give Gallman the d*mn ball! Our play calling has been the biggest issue so far this year. Wayne Train averaging 6.5 ypc against the delicate flowers from Louisville, but we decided to force the pass and wear our defense out....

Last week against State, our highest graded offensive players were

Fruh - 74
Crowder - 71.5
Leggett - 70
Guillermo - 69. 7
Williams - 68.4

Three OL in our top 5. Let them run block and blow some people up! I know they want to showcase Watson, but pounding Gallman will do that!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Speaking of the WAYNE TRAIN

Oct 22, 2016, 7:49 AM

the backs, as a group...have under achieved as well, IMO.
Like to see Feaster get a look at number 2.

A lot of you on here are just plain dumb, and you can't fix stupid. Our OL is on pace to be a young, but really good one.

Just a couple fun facts to leave here...almighty TROY leads the nation in sacks allowed with only 1. Our average OL is tied for 6th in the nations with only 6 sacks allowed through 7 games. Let that marinate for a while.

Go Tigers!

I don't think people are concerned with pass coverage. Especially when you have an elusive QB.

The avg comment I think is great and appears that he feels we need to get better
I rather have that than being cocky with no room for improvement??

We are young, both tackles are true sophomores and have a lot of football in front of them

Re: New Story: Swinney takes issue with Hyatt's "average" comment

Oct 21, 2016, 1:14 AM

Hate Saban all you want- personally I don't care for the guy- but if you want to know the difference between Saban- and multiple national championships- and Dabo, just compare comments. One is intolerant of mediocrity and complacency, the other seems ready to crown mediocrity and hand out participation trophies. This team is good, but far from great. Dabo's attitude is not helping them strive to be the best they can be. Very disappointing. He's looking out for himself and is managing expectations. Sorry, but it's bull$hit. What happened to "Best is the Standard"?

Exactly. .

Hyatts play has probably been above average. The rest of the line has played decent, but there are definitely things to be worked on.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Reading something Dabo says to the media and then assuming

Oct 21, 2016, 8:41 AM [ in reply to Re: New Story: Swinney takes issue with Hyatt's "average" comment ]

that's how he actually feels on the subject is silly. You have no idea what he's actually telling the OL. You don't know how he's coaching them in practice. If Dabo has done one thing in his tenure at Clemson it's repeatedly put out a positive message in the media. Why would he change now?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Um, so Hyatt is more stupid than

Oct 21, 2016, 1:17 AM [ in reply to Re: New Story: Swinney takes issue with Hyatt's "average" comment ]

any of us who agree with him?

badge-donor-05yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Uh,no!

Oct 22, 2016, 7:52 AM [ in reply to Re: New Story: Swinney takes issue with Hyatt's "average" comment ]

Not sure that's even true or not, other than you said that...but.

If it was, Watson gets himself out of bad situtaions....RUNNING FOR HIS
FREAKING LIFE!!
And no my friend, we can't run the FB.....the whole OL has been, very
very avg.

You got your 2 cents, and guess what...
we have ours.

no pun.

Agree w Hyatt maybe even below avg but Dabo is

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

NO FARMERS NO FOOD

Yep, Dabo is not the type to throw players or even position

Oct 21, 2016, 8:43 AM

groups under the bus in the media. He's going to keep everything positive with the press.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We haven't ran the ball worth #### this year Dabo!

Oct 21, 2016, 8:03 AM

If anyone does think our running game has been good, let me know.

Bama runs at you, even when you know it's coming. Problem is, they have better players, so it doesn't matter if you know it's coming. You gotta stop it.

We have better players. At 22 positions. Let's act like it.

Go tigers!

I don't disagree with Mitch Haytt at all.....In fact.
I will say right now, it's the weakest area on the team followed by RB.
