Underrated RBs

Feb 2, 2022, 10:24 AM

Clemson has had its share of great Running Backs, some are legends like CJ, ETN, and Terry Allen. Who is your favorite RB that you feel should get more praise? You can only choose one.

For me, I will go with Adam Choice. That dude was a reliable workhorse. He could get tough yards, and block well.

It’s hard, nearly impossible to choose just one, so honorable mentions to Andre Ellington and Reggie Merriweather.

I always thought Wayne Gallman was underrated

Feb 2, 2022, 10:25 AM

dude ran hard and was great in pass protection

Yes

Feb 2, 2022, 10:31 AM

Great pick. I liked how Dabo described him as a violent runner.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah, he was a three star recruit

Feb 2, 2022, 10:32 AM [ in reply to I always thought Wayne Gallman was underrated ]

that made it to the NFL.

Andre Ellington was a four-star recruit and highly ranked. Hard to call him underrated.

I mentioned Andre because

Feb 2, 2022, 10:36 AM

He had a tough gig following up CJ. Andre was such a good and shifty back; really fun to watch. But yeah, he’s probably not really underrated.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, and he reminded me of Dixon in that way....

Feb 2, 2022, 10:40 AM

backing up ETN.

We don't really have that shifty speedster behind Ship, just power-backs. Trevor was that guy but the only legacy we didn't sign in this class.

I would like to see us go for an Allington, ETN, Spiller type RB in 2023.

I think your comment proves that Ellington was underrated.

You compare him and his running style to Lyn J Dixon who was a career backup and Ellington has top 10 marks in multiple career stats at Clemson.

Ellington was a backup to CJ Spiller as a redshirt freshman and then was a 3 year starter.

He has those marks in spite of missing 8 or 9 games (almost a full season) due to injury while being the starting RB at Clemson.

RONALD WILLIAMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Feb 2, 2022, 10:26 AM

what could have been

u didn't mention Priester?

Geville Tiger on Clemson football , "Dabo's only problem is he has to deal with turd fans questioning every move he makes.”

Re: RONALD WILLIAMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great picks. It’s so hard to pick one, or even 5. Clemson has a great history of great backs. I didn’t even mention James, Mr. Thunder himself, Davis.

Terrance Flagler played behind Kenny Flowers.........

Feb 2, 2022, 10:31 AM

Flagler never got his chance to start until his junior or senior year. When he finally started he had one of the best years we have ever seen. The 49ers picked him and he played on some great 49er teams. Probably one of my favorite RBs along with Ronald Williams and Etienne.

Reggie Merriwether

Terry Witherspoon and Emory Smith were fbs but

and did a great job while here but that position doesn't get much love and today is about non-existant.

Also a FB: Chris Lancaster. A bruising fullback very difficult to bring down.

James Davis is one. Another was Gallman. Andre Ellington .

Kenny Flowers

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Raymond Priester for sure!

Feb 2, 2022, 10:49 AM

Anthony Downes and Pegues were the big names that year, but Priester was the gem!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Andre Ellington would get a lot more praise than he does, if

Feb 2, 2022, 11:17 AM

he had not directly followed CJ Spiller. I remember him being referred to at the time as "CJ Lite". He was pretty doggone impressive in his own write.

Props to many of the RB's in addition to Terry Allen (one of my favorites) who excelled during the Ford era with outstanding OL and FB blocking! Kenny Flowers, Terrance Flagler, Cliff Austin, Kevin Mack, Ronald Williams, and Stacey Driver come to mind.

Also props to James Davis who excelled and unselfishly recruited CJ!

I’ve seen some great mentions. I haven’t seen a mention for one of my favorite bruiser FB’s, Tracy Johnson. If you got it to 3rd and 3 just give it to Tracy on a FB dive. He’d get it every time! He was such a stud in that citrus bowl win over Penn State, back when bowls really meant something.

All those are excellent so I'll go with a name I haven't seen mentioned.
Emory Smith.... What a bruiser
He could carry tacklers down field or juke them out of the way.

Bigger than his brother, but had that unfortunate back injury.
