Would someone explain the targeting call?

Oct 3, 2021, 9:13 AM

It just looked like the kind of play that happens all the time with no flag. I see that Davis lowered his head. Maybe he launched. Is the runner defenseless? Does the runner have to be defenseless? Every time I think I understand it I get it wrong.

You can't lower your head and hit someone with the crown of the head. That will get you tossed everytime. I don't know about other teams but we have one in about every game.

I appreciate the explanation. Again it seems like this happens multiple times during any game. Probably made more obvious in a punt return situation.

Yes……..it’s a 2 part rule.

Part 1 - if it helps the SEC, it is targeting.

Part 2 - if it hurts the SEC, it is not targeting.

Total Impunity.

It’s become a nuanced judgement call.

We seem to be guilty a lot in the nuanced judgement of officials.

True but those plays were both 5 years ago and they seem to call it

Several years ago, I found a site that listed the states that ACC refs come from. Over 40% came from North Carolina......

Yesterday I posted about my conspiracy suspicions

Oct 3, 2021, 10:33 AM

regarding ACC officials and the apparent ongoing willingness of the conference to bite the hand that feeds it.

Tha ACC appears to me to be taking the opportunity to nock Clemson Down a peg or two.

They seem to be perfectly willing to be a mediocre league as long as Clemson doesn’t win it every year.

They showed their hand openly in the 1982 “extra year” of probation levied above the NCAA sanctions.

The ACC leadership is nefarious.

They used to call I spearing. Think of it that way. He went in like a spear or missile, leading with the crown of th helmet, not the face mask... People will disagree but it was an unsafe tackle. The rule may be hard to call but I 100% agree with the reasoning behind the rule.

Like so many well-intentioned rules and regulations

The spirit is good but the application is questionable.

Basically, if the defender's helmet

has a paw on it, then in can't be within two yards of the ball carrier.

Tackle like the do in The Soccer.

They'd just call it tripping and still penalize us 15 yards. At least the player wouldn't be disqualified.

I hate targeting call. I understand point, but anytime

Oct 3, 2021, 10:20 AM

anyone gets rocked anymore, somebody pulls a flag. If the same play happens but with less force, they swallow the flag.

I hope they change the rule soon. Understand the penalty but don’t punish the kids by throwing them out of the game. If it’s a repeated offense, that’s different. Kills me to see these kids get ejected over one bad (or questionable) decision.

Bend over. Grab your ankles and brace yourself. That’s the best way to explain it.

Hard hit = Targeting

The offensive guy gets to lower and lead with his head...the tackler or defender does not....

Re: Hard hit = Targeting

A change that needs to be made to the rule is that a tackler that dives across a runners lower body to knock him down and the runner lowers his head and the tackler makes helmet to helmet contact should not be called for targeting.

Also, if they are going to call targeting or any penalty at least call it correctly. It WAS NOT a defenseless player he was a runner, and last week the PI was not on Nolan Turner!

Re: Hard hit = Targeting

How about this? Eliminate calling down from the booth for targeting and put it in the hands of the officials on the field. Forget all the hair splitting and interminable replays. Unnecessary roughness is already on the books and an official on the field certainly knows it when he sees it. Fifteen yards and play on. Two URs for the same player and he’s gone.
