DROPS.
We had at least five balls that any middle school receiver would have caught that were dead on target and just dropped. I can remember three that would have extended drives. I know we're thin at the position, but if you were recruited as a receiver and given a scholarship then I can't excuse you. Maybe it was that particular position group that had the flu but last night was some DJU-era pass-dropping that we haven't seen much of this past month.

Cade is not great and needs our guys to catch every pass he can get to them. We had a lot last night that hurt too many drives.

The thing that drives me nuts about Cade is that he HAS the tools.

But at times, he goes into Jack Russell Terrier hyper mode and just can't seem to reel himself back in. I'm no quarterback coach, but I don't really think that's the kind of thing that can be taught. You either have it, or you don't. Watson had it more than any I've ever seen play at Clemson. Trevor had it too. There's just an innate ice water in the veins mentality that separates the great from the good. On a scale of 1-5, Watson was a 5. Trevor was a 4.5. Steve Fuller and Charlie Whitehurst were 4s. Boyd was a 3.5. Cade is a 2.5. DJ was a 2. Most programs can survive with a 3 to a 3.5 but getting a quarterback beyond that middle ground is where a team can really thrive. I'd bet Rattler is in that 3 to 3.5 range when he's not hung out to dry behind poor protection.

but no way he gets as good as Boyd or Whitehurst. He can get to a level were he is good enough, without mistakes, to win a lot of games, but not good enough to get us to a win in the playoffs.

But that innate quality that the great ones have...well, he ain't got it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking Cade. There aren't many that do and we got spoiled with 6 straight years of that before seeing the other end of the spectrum. I'd lay more blame on our quarterback recruiting evaluation than I would the player, actually. If our staff had built a system around DJ, he possibly could have gotten up to a 3 on my scale. Unfortunately, Cade's raw skillset IS what our system requires and it exposes that somewhat.

Maybe there is some medication that would help? Mushrooms? Hypnosis? He does seem a little ADHD at times.

If he had 3 future NFL receivers to throw to, I am sure he would look better

but we don't.
I hope the freshman pushes him some this coming year and we have a backup that could actually come in and play. We shall see.
There was a great article on TI comparing Cade to all the other QB's in his class and actually he is on par or better than most from that recruiting year.

This time.
If we face anyone with a pulse in the bowl game they will need to make those catches for sure

Cade did ok last night.
His runs were not things of beauty probably because with no deep threat the defense was close to the line of scrimmage.
The swing/screen passes were ok but not great. There were several where he threw the ball and the RB/WR caught it and made some yards, but they were awkward passes. If he'd lead them they'd have gotten more YAC. Instead, they had to stop to adjust to the throw and it limited the gains.
The WR drops were not his fault. Those 3 to 5 were all on the receivers.
For people bitching about Dabo not throwing the ball more, with a 2 possession lead and a defense playing well and receiver who won't catch balls thrown to them, running the ball to run clock IS the answer.

Yep. That's my point entirely.

Cade managed the game well enough to win. And I surely wasn't blaming him for the drops. Even the interception in the corner was forgivable, the DB had great coverage and it wasn't what I'd consider a poorly thrown ball and really more of a poorly run route if anything. And yes, based on where we are at this point of the season, last night was exactly what it took to win and we executed it very well. All that said, my long-winded point was that while Cade isn't one of those generational guys that has that 'it' factor, he can lead the team to very successful seasons but our receivers have to hold up their end no matter where they are on the depth chart. Not making the catch when you're basically uncovered and hit in the hands is what I find inexcusable. That's a lack of concentration and focus, simple as that. If you can't make THOSE catches, you need to ask to move to a position where you can contribute.
