Will Richard Question:

Apr 4, 2022, 11:08 PM

This kid is transferring from Belmont and according to 247 Sports, the schools recruiting him the hardest are GaT, Florida, Wake Forest and South Carolina. They mention us in the teams he considering too.

His dad, mom, sister and brother ALL graduated from Clemson, how in the h3ll he ended up NOT at Clemson as a freshman? What is the recruiting approach of this staff?

He had zero high major offers coming out of high school.

If you’re expecting our staff to identify undiscovered talent that no one else in major college basketball does, then you should be in full support of Clemson funding basketball better. If staffs with more and higher caliber people than we can currently afford don’t identify these types of players, we have very little chance of doing so.

I can understand if Clemson didn't recruit him hard then, but really disappointing not recruiting him hard now especially with those ties to the school. He is considered a top 5 player in the portal. Need a good wing to replace Colllins. Here is the story he was referring to:

He does say Clemson at the end. Should be recruiting him really hard though.

Not only are his parent graduates but dad Al played defensive tackle and mom ran track. Will also has a brother in Anderson and grandparent close by

We are recruiting him hard.

He is a high priority for us. Brad was just on campus visiting him.

Not sure why some people are suggesting we aren’t trying hard to get him.

Mom, dad, sister AND brother graduated from Clemson...he was not under a rock.

If this staff is that unconnected and that unwillingly to take a flyer every once and awhile then do not even need a budget...just pitiful when it comes to vision.

It’s pathetic how hard you are trying to criticize our staff.***

This is an important concept everyone needs to understand.

Apr 5, 2022, 12:53 PM

There are two types of players who fly under the radar when it comes to high major schools.

1. Players who play at a high/visible level in high school but don’t fit the measurables high major programs look for (e.g., too short, too slow, lacking specific skills). Ja Morant falls into this category. Every single blue blood and many high major programs saw him play many times when they were watching Zion, and none thought he was worthy of a scholarship offer. His only high major offer was SC.

2. Players who play well but are not visible. Perhaps they play in a very low level of high school competition, or don’t play AAU, or play in a far away location. They are just not easy to find.

There are over 500,000 boys basketball players each year. Even with the emphasis today on recruiting services, and extensive coaching time spent on recruiting, good players can and do slip through the cracks.

If Duke, UNC, and Kentucky whiffed on a guy like Ja Morant, do you really think it’s so inexcusable that our staff did too? If so, why are you holding our coaches to such a high standard?

The job of our coaches is to get the best players possible. Sometimes they hit on a top recruit like PJ Hall, and sometimes they find an unheralded diamond in the rough like KJ McDaniels. But using random examples like Ja Morant and trying to use it against our staff to complain and criticize is unfair. It’s also a really bad look for someone who claims to be a fan.

Clemson is recruiting him hard too. Again, this staff will not offer unless a pure top 3 star type top 200 player. Same thing with Ja Morant. Richard was not that highly recruited, but this staff needs to take chances sometimes.

This is your moronic post of the day. Our staff is suppose to see something no other major college coach can see? So how does that work? Start offering all the one and two star guys hoping that they all develop and play like a four star player? Even you should see the fallacy in your scheme

For once you have a really solid point since every one on our roster is a 3 star or better and we never have room for walk-ons. It definitely wouldn’t make sense to spend time or resources developing quality depth with this kind of player.

I’ll pile on with the tongue-in-cheek replies

Apr 5, 2022, 8:05 AM

Why would Clemson basketball take a chance on a Clemson legacy (?-family is orange) who lives in Atlanta when we have 4 and 5 stars clawing to play here?

Re: Will Richard Question:

I noticed on budgets, football has camps, but baseball and basketball don’t have camps. Is this true? I know we get a lot of football players that went to football camps for years. Why not bb and bb?

Re: Will Richard Question:

most schools have elite camps in basketball, but you usually don't hear about them. It is usually just an one day event and includes recruited underclassman freshmen or sophomores in the HS classes. Clemson has had them under Purnell and Brownell, but not a lot of media attention like football

I know we used to have baseball camps because the son of one of my employees attended several years ago. No idea if they still do though.

Baseball has multiple camps including a prospect camp. But legit prospects are probably not inclined to pay for them. I don’t know but assume players we’re actively recruiting are scholarshipped to these things. It’s probably pretty hard to get on the radar at these things. Actual coaches usually only make a cursory appearance. Jack was known for being more hands on than most - don’t know about Monte.

Re: Will Richard Question:

Head coaches may not be all eyes and ears at the camps, but I can assure you that all assistant coaches on campus are glued to the prospect camps.

If there is somebody worth talking to, then they make sure the head coach swoops in to show the player some attention.
