Why is the defense ahead of the offense at fall camp

Aug 8, 2023, 10:58 AM

My theory is the defense has been seeing the offense for a relatively long time, and can diagnose the play quicker than a normal opponent can. Also one offensive player making a mistake will usually get a play blown up where one defensive player making a mistake will often be covered up by a teammate making a good play.

I can think of an example of the familiarity with the plays from when I was in high school. We ran a counter play where the halfback made a false step to the wrong direction and then would reverse himself and take a hand off and run behind the opposite tackle. That play worked very often against other teams we played, because they often bit on the fake step in the opposite direction. We started that play in practice one day and the defensive safety saw me reverse to take the hand off. He headed full speed for the hole and met me a yard past the LOS. It was a big hit and everyone was somewhat surprised I popped right up without fumbling, although his helmet hit my hand right on the point of the ball(my hand was so numb I had to look to see if it was touching the ground when I took my stance the next 3 plays).

All that to say this fall camp I expect we will see the offense do better than we are used to them doing. My rationale is the defense hasn't been seeing the plays for 2 or 3 years since they are "new" plays. The other part is each play (as I understand it from articles on the internet, so it must be true) has a number of options depending upon what the defense is showing. If the offense is making the proper reads it should do much better. Hope I am right.

There is better talent and depth on the D-side. If Riley gets us going the talent will catch up from recruiting over the next couple of cycles.

Despite losing some guys we've got a very experienced defense. Not surprising they would be ahead especially when the offense is learning a new scheme.

If your offense is ahead of your defense at this point
