Why is anyone surprised about our basketball program?

Jan 25, 2013, 7:45 AM

I have been watching Clemson basketball since I was 6 years old. I was there in 90 when we beat Duke to clinch the regular season crown. I was a student during the Rick Barnes era when we cracked the top 5 in the nation. Even during the Rick Barnes era we had crazy losses that made you scratch your head. I live in Charlotte now and attended the ACC Champ game a few years back.

I have seen good basketball come through Clemson, but trust me I have seen a lot more bad basketball than good basketball.

Our program is never going to be an elite program. We have a very solid coach in Brad Brownell that seems to want to be at Clemson more than OP or Rick Barnes. Let's be patient with the guy. This team is young. It has no juniors playing and one could argue that our two seniors aren't exactly the senior leadership required to hold a bunch of freshman and sophies together on the road while trying to protect a lead.

We said the same thing about Barnes and OP!

All I heard was how much OP LOVED Clemson. How much his family liked it here, but that did not help in the end. If you think Brownell would not leave for a midwest BCS conference team, you are kidding yourself.

Brownell is a great coach

I went to his Coach's Clinic last year and learned a lot about him as a coach. He knows what he is doing. I just hope we hold on to him for as long as we can. If he can get good recruits, he can turn this program around. I'm not sure if he can make it an elite program without recruting the best. It is going to be hard to recruit the best when your recruiting against Duke and UNC a state away.

I think he is a very good x and o type coach, just needs a great deal of help, improvement and support from his assistants in recruiting.
