Why in the world is Dabo still playing Howard and Davidson

over Gallman and Choice?
Once again, it's clear to everyone in the stands Gallman/Choice are the better backs.....isn't it clear to them?
I understand Howard is the best blocker in passing downs, but still....what gives?

Howard had a good fall and gives us the best chance to win.

He's only averaging 2 yards per carry....I can't imagine he'd be starting for any other D1 program....
My theory is this is Dabo rewarding one of his 'bama boys, much like "The Matador" Antoine McClain.

I'm not a Howard fan, however.

He was late in his career.
And none of our backs are any where near CJ Spiller talent in any facet of their game including tieing their shoes.

Even late in his career he wasn't great between the tackles. Had a little too much hesitation. He was still a fantastic player and one of the greatest to ever put on the Orange and White (and Purple). I'm just saying every player has their strengths and weaknesses.

I agree that he is a serviceable back, but he sure hurt us vs. FSU, I'd rather not go into that as I'm not here to bash Davidson.
Pretty sad state of affairs that your best RB is a walk on...just sayin'.
We really miss Brooks and Dye, that's all I can say. Those were two huge losses for us.

They still don't fully trust Gallman and Choice was hurt

Supposedly Choice had a deep thigh bruise during the week and was a bit hobbled. Gallman didn't help his cause by fumbling that pass.

Gallman looked pretty good against SC State - not so good

Saturday dropping the short shuffle pass or carrying the ball (similar statement for Choice). CJ so far has looked, to me, like the most reliable back we've got and I'd prefer to see more of him until Gallman and Choice learn to perform better against D1 defenses.

The data shows (vs. UNC) that Davidson and Gallman were more effective than Howard if you use a ypc benchmark.
I realize we have issues at TE (like no blocking), but we have got to put our best guys on the field, IMO.

Davidson is Ok and the two freshman are coming along. All were waiting on is one more freshman to come along and take the show in Tyshone Dye. I think Choice if he is healthy will be a dominant back and Davidson will help with 2nd and 3rd down rushes. Howard on the other hand is just like Coach Swinney said is waiting on his break out game which may come against Syracuse or Wake forest either way it will be to a horrible defense and give him the nod for the rest of the year. Really until Tyshone Dye is healthy which I hope is very soon.

Gallman had 1 carry

[ in reply to Re: data? ] |

not exactly a large sample size. Not disagreeing with you that the freshmen should play, but you can't make an assumption off of 1 carry. Gallman is still making fundamental mistakes(dropped a shuttle pass). In this game, with NC stacking the box, maybe they wanted the supprior guy in pass pro in, and that is Howard

Don't disagree at all. But the one time he did carry he nearly busted a big carry if the corner hadn't made an ankle tackle.
Point is, he's a threat. Howard isn't.

He is reliable

All the RBs are equal in my opinion, they all have some strengths but all have some and none seem to overlap much. I think we need a better RB coach, or at least we need to develope a RB like UGA can develope. We need stronger running game, I understand Dabo was a WR in college and a WR coach, but he needs to get a better run game. Successful teams that win championships do so behind 1. A rock solid Oline (which is getting better) 2. A rock solid running game (which we havent seen much promise from in the past few years).

I don't see Elliott going anywhere and he's a stud recruiter.
I think ultimately the injuries to Brooks and Dye were far costlier than any of us anticipated they would be.
Howard may be "reliable", as you put it, but he's not a threat to break anything and that's fairly obvious to most of the defenses we play against.

I'll say this again. Ppl talk about how fast Davidson is, and he might be. But that track speed just hasn't translated to FB. He seems so nervous running the fb...maybe that's why he fumbled against Fla State.
But I agree, Choice and Gallman are the best 2 backs. With that said...any word on Dye?

CJ has looked better than Choice/Galman
Sep 29, 2014, 5:19 PM

Seems to hit the hole a lot harder, spins for a few yards while falling consistently.
Choice could be good with some good blocking, but he gets brick walled all the time and doesn't seem to be able to blow through the smaller cracks. Ditto for Gallman, though he's got the best hands of the three from a receiving standpoint.
