Why Etienne hasn't played more

Sep 27, 2017, 11:07 AM

Someone may have addressed this already, but all I keep seeing is people complaining that ETN hasn't gotten enough snaps. Here's MY OPINION on why we haven't seen more of him.

It's simple, the coaches do not trust him in blocking situations. Tony Elliott said before the season (at the IPTAY Rep day) that he played in a completely different offense in high school, and didn't know the first thing about blocking or picking up blitzes. That kind of thing takes time.

You can see what I'm talking about when you look at the statistics of carries vs snaps.

Fuller: 22 carries, 93 snaps (24%)
Feaster: 39 carries, 111 snaps (35%)
Choice: 21 carries, 54 snaps (39%)
ETN: 23 carries, 35 snaps (66%)

It's clear the coaches still don't fully trust him to block. When he's in the game, he's getting the ball 2 out of every 3 plays, while everyone else is less than 2 out of every 5 plays. It makes it easier for the defense to key in on that. (Because teams are still figuring out how we are using him, they haven't been able to key in on it as much yet, but I would expect to see his ypc decrease quite a bit if we see him early in games against good defenses).

Once defenses wear down, and you bring in fresh legs like that, he's really tough to stop, even if you know what's coming. It doesn't work as well early in games when everyone is fresh, and they know what's coming when he gets in the game.

That said, he is still a ridiculous talent, and I'm not taking away from his running skills in any way. Once he learns blocking schemes, how to block effectively, and who is his responsibility on different blitzes, he's going to be one of the best we've seen at Clemson when his career here is over.

Well thought out analysis ... on point. Thanks!***

He could also be getting carriers at a higher percentage

because at the time of game that he is in, we have a different strategy... running out the clock.

That being said, I still think it is blocking and playbook that is keeping him out some.

You don't run out the clock with a kid who can score

I'm not sure, but did you just tell Bud Foster that when ETN

is in the game, he's going to get the ball ?

And obviously there's nothing he can do about it***

Well he's mostly played late in games where we were running

on most snaps regardless of who was at RB.

Blocking and ball security - of course. I never understood

the bafflement with ETN's lack of PT. I agree 100% with your take and have been saying all along that his PT and role in the offense will increase as the season progresses.
