symbol was just another thing...like spuds mackenzie, joe camel or the palmetto state flag... it was like a redneck emoji of the 80s. Things have definitely changed.

My earliest memory of Dear Old Clemson U. Is Tiger Bands rendition of Dixie. Nothing could top that. Combine that with Tiger Rag and it was worth the price of admission!

Dixie is such a beautiful, powerful song and sounds great when played by a big marching band. It's ashamed what it has come to be associated with such that it can no longer be played.

Growing up in the south, I always associated that flag with

Feb 15, 2022, 5:26 PM [ in reply to if you were anywhere in the south the confederate flag ]

southern pride, and things like sunshine and hot weather, laid-back slower life-style, fried food and sweet tea, fundamentalist Christianity, a unique way of talking, and on and on. While the south was still largely segregated when I was very young, I witnessed desegregation and and massive social transformation, and grew up with many black friends. My parents were not racists, none of my friends were racists, and really nobody I knew was a racist, even though some held some racist views or used the "N" word, all of which changed rather dramatically over time. Life in the south was about much, much more than the ugly racism which prevailed here for so long, and can't be denied or minimized, but it in no way defines the south either. The south, for many of us, represents a great childhood and a great place to live, and to us, that's what that flag has always represented. I, and others like me were not evil or racist in any way for feeling that way.

Having said all of that, I understand it was the confederate battle flag, and now understand that certainly represents something very different for many people. It does not represent all southerners, nor all South Carolinians. That's why I totally understand and support why it was brought down off of the statehouse and official buildings by governor Haley.

Hey guy, honest question, do you know what racism is, based on these comments (your words, not mine) you literally have no idea lol.

Re: Growing up in the south, I always associated that flag with

Feb 15, 2022, 7:11 PM

I understand where you are coming from, but I disagree strongly for the most part. I certainly stand by this:

The south, for many of us, represents a great childhood and a great place to live and a great place to have grown up, and to us, that's what that flag has always represented. I, and others like me were not evil or racist in any way for feeling that way.

Loving the south does not equal racism. Period. I'd wager that 95% of the people who flew that flag when I was a younger flew it as a symbol of southern pride - plain and simple - nothing more. Some people used it and viewed it as a symbol of racism, but for years that was not the case for most. Having said that, we all may have been guilty to some degree of being insensitive or lacking the proper perspective, but there was certainly no racial intent or connotation for most who flew it during that time. I know that's hard to comprehend for people who weren't alive then, but it's the truth. Hayull, people wore confederate flag tee shirts when I was in high school and college, and I had lots of black friends and classmate who never said a word or thought anything of it, and it certainly wasn't because they were scared or intimidated, because there were times of great racial strife and division during my school days - the confederate flag just was a non-issue for the most part. The whole issue has evolved, however, and I'm fine with that, and my perspective has evolved as well.

As for use of the "N" word, I think it was so commonplace and accepted at one time, that it was used by people, who probably engaged in some other forms of what we now clearly recognize as racist behavior as well, that really weren't racists, but were just following social norms of the day, and as they grew and became more aware, they changed their behavior because they weren't racists at heart.

Dude you need help. I’m the farthest thing from woke or left, what you just said is disgusting and ignorant, and possibly the most unintellectual thing I’ve ever read. The “n” word was only “commonplace” by guess what…. Racists. And it has NEVER been accepted in society.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Growing up in the south, I always associated that flag with

Feb 15, 2022, 8:19 PM

To be a racist, one must hold certain beliefs. There were certainly people many years ago who used the "N" word with zero ill intent or disrespect intended, who did not hold racist beliefs. Most of them, if they lived long enough, grew to understand why that was wrong, and quit using it. It may be hard for you to accept, but it is a fact. Heck, it's accepted now in certain segments of society today.

This world has been conditioned to live on polarized islands

Feb 16, 2022, 9:16 AM [ in reply to Re: Growing up in the south, I always associated that flag with ]

I understand your points and agree with them all. It was not a polarized, racist world that hated first like today. We just don't live a world where there is gray area anymore. Where you could coexist with a dumb flag on a tshirt at EAGLES in Myrtle Beach and not feel like someone is trying to eliminate you from living. We now live in a world where people find their meaning in Virtue Signaling. This is how you know you're a good person if you eliminate rationality and reason and go straight for throat by accusing someone of some atrocity in whatever roundabout way that you can. Its unfortunate but this is us. Heck even yesterday a Washington Professor said that "freedom is a tool of the right and needs to be curtailed." Rationality...reason.....down the drain with this new culture.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Exactly. The vast majority of people who wore rebel flag

Feb 16, 2022, 3:53 PM

tee shirts when I was growing up were not racists, and many were actually antiracists. It was merely a symbol of southern pride, which rightly or wrongly, most southerners had divorced from racism in our minds. You'll never get a pile of ignorant, brainwashed idiots who weren't there to understand that, though.

Man, you gotta love the good ole days of human bondage, racial segregation, children of color getting spit on while attending school, Bull Connor, etc. All the time with the stars and bars flying within the photo frame. If the old white dudes posting on here were on the other end of that, their frame of reference would be a little different. I am not sure what "woke" is, but in this instance it sure sounds like enlightenment.

"Glorifying" is a reach.
One can post freely "Black Lives Matter" (no one here disagrees with the concept just the group in charge). Why is "Blue Lives" or "All Lives" not equal? Who on Tnet separates as to race?

"old white dudes" were a diverse lot in a different era. They went with what they knew and improved the USA. "old white dudes" were on both sides of every issue.

I’m sure some Germans miss the nazi flag. Not all bad.

Feb 15, 2022, 6:22 PM

Like… military excellence, scientific innovation, tall beautiful blind people, a growing economy, jobs for everyone and expansion of the german footprint. Do you know that Germany has a museum for the atrocities that happened under that flag? We are the only country that celebrates another country (confederate states of America) as part of their own country. Confusing when those states did not include or unite a whole part of the population. And I was born and raised in the lowcountry and my family has been there since the 1700’s, so I have southern heritage. I even as a black man- have confederate officers in my blood line. But You’ve got to wonder why glorifying Dixie( the name of the plantation my slave ancestors were probably associated with) makes me feel uncomfortable.

Picked as much cotton or peaches with black people as I did. When I was a very young kid in the 40s that was a normal summer day for me. I never gave it a second thought. Never ever was there any kind of trouble between the two races working side by side. Picking cotton paid a penny a pound! You were good if you could pick 100 pounds after school. That is one dollar for those of you who are uSC grads, Today is a tremendous improvement over that. I’ve seen both side and I like today a whole lot better.

Re: I bet few on this board

Feb 15, 2022, 7:44 PM

Folks, this has been said over and over. History cannot be changed. It happened. What happened with slavery and white people not accepting our fellow man, created by the same God( yes, I’m talking about the black race) taught the United States a very valuable lesson, and the wheels were put in motion to change. No, it didn’t happen over night. It took decades. I was born in the late fifties, saw a lot of ugly and mean things in the sixties. I didn’t understand things then. I definitely do not think the same way today. Slavery and racism happened in the Bible. Jesus came for ALL people. Read it! God has a plan whether you believe the Bible or not. Read it, start with Genesis. It’s full of history. Stuff happened. Everybody get over yourselves, help this great country move forward.

Like you HBBrown, have kin who fought in every war going back to the Revolution (check Purity Church grave yard).

Confusing folks by posting "Germany" is weak. I guess like me, you lost kin in WW!!. The USA is not Nazi. All the German folks I have met are as solid as us, and I was in the Army there for years.

I am white and see no reason to hide that. My ancestors are Scotch and Irish.
