Who realistically could we get?

Not saying that I am in the fire Browned camp (yet), but who could we get knowing that higher profile teams like Indiana, Ohio State, Georgetown, etc are also likely to open up?

I have at least 3 out of those 5 boxes checked. For me! Should I at least get an interview?

Will Wade is a no brainer. Alum, great guy and has won at both UTC and VCU.

The truth is BB is a 2nd ranked sport at Clemson by the AD depth. Has been and always will be.

with what we've built I think we could get some decent candidates. I think the roster would need some pruning. these transfers clearly have no interest in the D end of the court

Will Wade makes more than CBB, their basketball budget is bigger than Clemson, VCU basketball is the top sport on campus, it is easier to recruit in Richmond due to geography and frankly VCU is a better basketball job.

That , of course, will take money but it is the only way to change the perception of basketball both inside the Clemson family and outside. Barnes turned out to be that even though I'm not sure anyone knew it at the time we hired him.

Providence was probably bottom of the barrel compensation wise, and Barnes had southern roots. It's hard to think of a major college coach coming here without huge dollars thrown their way. And I just don't see that happening.
If a move is made, I think the working list includes Wade, Archie Miller, Dan Hurley and maybe Ed Cooley, also of Providence. Can't think of a single major conference guy. Barnes is the only guy we've hired that fits that description, and I don't see someone like that out there now. Not even someone recently let go someplace else.
Going back to the sixties, our hires have been:
Bobby Roberts-Clemson assistant Tates Locke-Army Bill Foster-UNCC Cliff Ellis-South Alabama Barnes-Providence Shyatt-Wyoming OP-Dayton Brad-Wright St
It's going to be a mid major guy unless is an assistant at a big time program

I don't know enough about the potential pool of coaches to
Feb 5, 2017, 3:05 PM

give you a name, but it defies reality to suggest that we can't do better than this. It's simply a bogus excuse for not doing something.
You never know when you hire a coach; even "proven winners" fail, and sometimes an unknown will take you to the top. What we do know with a great deal of certainty is what Brownell is capable of at Clemson; we have a 7 year track record. It's starry-eyed wishful thinking at best to think that the next seven would be any different. Barring a shocking turnaround, we know Brownell is not the answer. We know that somebody else could be.
We need somebody who can recruit. That means either a fairly big name, or a young up-and-comer who relates to recruits; a coach who can sell all of the wonderful things Clemson has to offer and that recruits want to play for. I would take either, but I think our chances are better with the latter.

Another name: Muller of Ill. St.! He is making that program into something. My first choice is Will Wade, second, Archie Miller and most importantly spend the funds needed to hire a great recruiter!!

And first off the "who could we get" talk is ridiculous. That's what people said when Bowden was the football head coach. How'd that work out?

Nah on a serious note because I have no clue but reading what others have posted Will Wade would get my vote.
No way we're 50 points worse than fla st. Guys get down and seems like they've cashed it in. Hard for bb to get the team back.
Just don't think it's all a talent issue.

STOP saying realistically!
Feb 6, 2017, 11:43 PM
|
|
That implies that our job is inferior and that we can't afford or attract a great coach.
It's not just you, I see other posts suggesting that we go after a mid-major coach or assistant coach. Goodness, we can do so much better than that!
Assuming we want to be a good basketball program, and are willing to pay for a good coaching, we have no business asking who we can "realistically" get.
The only thing holding Clemson basketball back is Clemson.
