Favorite Safety to play at Clemson?
This is a tough one for me, but I think I would have to go with Isaiah Simmons.

Kinard had the most All-American recognition, but McDaniel is the Safety I can recall applied the most impressive hits.

senior, nobody ever expected the HOF career he had in the NFL, which I think enhances people's recollections of his Clemson days. He was a second round draft pick, 61st overall. Terry Kinard, on the other hand, was a consensus 1st team All-American twice, CBS National Defensive Player of the Year, USA 1980s All Decade Team, and still leads Clemson all-time in interceptions and tackles by a DB, and was taken 10th overall in the 1st round of the draft. Kinard had a much better, more heralded college career than Dawkins.

I don't know that I have an all-time favorite, but I liked K'Von Wallace because of his toughness and I liked that he played with a chip on his shoulder.

Wallace was definitely an underated and somewhat overlooked guy. I can't remember if he ever made an all ACC team. But his sticking pretty good in the NFL says a lot. Guy had some absolutely critical plays for us during our great run.

Wasn't Simmons a LB for us? I know he played several roles wrapped into 1 but he was definitely considered a LB for us right?
I've got to go with Dawkins but must admit I can't recall many Safeties that played for us over the years. Wallace and Muse were good ones. I know we had to have several great ones during Fords tenure too.

Terry Kinard. Hands down. Don’t remember the trophy that awarded the best DB in college football in that era but TK finished second to Deion Sanders.

a doubt. He was great! Was a main force behind our 1981 National Championship team and is now in the ROH.
Brian Dawkins had the better NFL career (is in the Pro Football HOF).

though I know he played QB and receiver at Clemson.
I was at the Notre Dame game in South Bend in 1979 when Terry Kinard picked off their QB twice and made a huge difference in that game. Have to go with him as the Clemson safety GOAT though he played some cornerback too.

I had the opportunity to play basketball with him many times and he could have just as easily played college hoops as he did football. Dude was an incredible athlete.

Just for the play vs Ponder where he intercepts, points at him and runs to him and knocks him out the game vs scoring a TD, which he could've done.
Simmons is a close second.

Van Smith - nah, he hates Clemson
Dec 19, 2023, 4:38 AM
|

Had a great sophomore season in 2016 with 95 tackles on the national championship team. Got hurt and replaced junior year. Apparently got some bad advice and came out early. Things didn't work out the way he had hoped.
Now he's really salty about Clemson; his Instagram and YouTube pages are a lot of aggressive anger. Guess he's working through his issues. Hope he gets it figured out. Once a Tiger, always a Tiger.
