Just pulled a major con at work

We need some nice storage crates to store spare transmissions in.
Mechanics wont make them because "they're not carpenters".
Utility guys wont make it because "they're too busy cleaning shiiters".
I go and talk to the dept. manager and explain the situation and then offer to buy the wood on my expense card and stay home a few days next week "when we're not busy here" and make them in my shop.
His reply, "GREAT IDEA!!!"

These crates are going to be good enough to store the Holy Grail in.
Made from 2x6 PT lumber, lined with 1/2 pT plywood, all cracks and seams caulked. The whole interior painted with flex-seal paint. Mounted on vibration dampeners. 4x4's at the base to for forklift access and 4x4s' in the corner to tie it all together.
Whenever we build up a transmission, it'll go in the crate with about 20lbs of desiccant material.
If you're wondering why this is a good idea, then you must have not installed a 50K transmission that had been in storage for 4 years only to find out that the bearings are brinelled to helll and it vibrates like a MF.
They told me "make sure it never happens again" and handed me a check book.

source? Never heard of this. The chemicals in the wood accelerate the degradation of non galvanized/stainless fasteners but it is not from 'salt'. As long as he uses galvanized fasteners and paints the inside of the box its fine.

Feeling good I just got tree service guys to push some extra dead trees down along property line and haul some bigass stumps and logs from driveway into woods. School district paid for it. I gave them $50 for lunch.

tools I've got. It would not be pretty. I've no idea how to fashion a drawer for it though. I also don't have a router so it would be rather blockish.

sounds like you will be covered with workers comp when your saw cuts off a few fingers. Thats probably good for a lump sum payment to you of around $6,000
|
