Boulware punt question?
Sep 3, 2013, 2:30 PM
|
|
Boulware's been getting a lot of flack for his play on the punt situation that most thought was on the verge of turning deadly. After watching the replay a few times I have a few observations I thought I'd throw out.
It appears from the front angle that Boulware may have been trying to block. The ball was heading into the 10-5 yard line when he made a turn towards the ball. The front angle doesn't appear to show him making a play for the ball which most thought he was. If he was blocking to help the ball get into the end zone for a touchback then I can understand his thinking. Also from that angle you can see him get pushed into the ball which as Herb-berger pointed out is a dead ball.
Thoughts or disagreements?

An error made for good reason, but an error that will be addressed by coaches no doubt.

I initially thought he was going to try and get the ball - but the replay showed I was wrong. I think he made a great play to prevent them from downing the ball. Pretty darn smart play IMO.
I only lost 2-3 years off my life when he did it though - but thankfully the replay showed how bad my eyes are.

When you weigh the risk vs reward, the risk was way too high.***

I'd rather have the ball at the 1 than give them a free 7 points. Risk is too high.

Never, ever, ever put the ref in a position to save you

Obviously the ref didn't see it as being blocked into the ball since he didn't rule touchback. And we certainly don't want to have to rely on "indisputable video evidence."
