While I am pleased that we've had better fan turnout

the last few games, I still found last night's turnout a bit disappointing.
The announced attendance last night was 6,923. I don't believe there were truly that many people in the arena last night, but we'll go with the announced number for discussion purposes.
Given the fact that Littlejohn seats 9,000, that means it was 77% full.
Some of you like to brag about how great our fan base is, and how they will support a winner. Well, we are having our best start to ACC play in program history, and were playing a conference rival last night, yet Littlejohn had a lot of empty seats. Is an arena that is only about 3/4ths full really something to brag about?
I'm sure some of you already have the excuses ready: it was a 9:00 PM start, it was a school night, it was cold outside, we're still waiting on the February football signing day, etc. Or maybe you'll just go with the old standby that it's Brownell's fault for being boring or playing boring basketball.
Again, the increased interest in our basketball program has been great. The fans have really given us a lift these last few home games. It's been great to see! But we can still do better, especially if we want to consider our fan base better than average.
Go Tigers!

But no way living in Charleston/Mt Pleasant/Sville, etc Lowcountry, can you make that 4hr drive for 2hr game. With gas, food, tix, etc would cost $400+, on a week night getting home at 4am to make 7am work. That doesn't make sense when can watch on TV for free and not endure pain of wallet and sleep deprivation.

Any other questions?
Get off the fans, Mrs Brownell. We're not the issue here. It's been 100% all on the head coach for the less than mediocre product we've seen most of his career.
Let's face it. If we hired Billy Donlon instead of Brad 13 years ago, we'd have had many more than two tournament wins and two too 50 finishes.

Death Valley would only be about 77% full for a Tuesday night game as well. Clemson is not located in a large metro area... that's just a fact, and it's hard to get fans to make that drive twice a week for a midweek game that starts at 9:00. Clemson has grown to about 25,000 students. If they want Littlejohn filled for every big game, Clemson needs to find a way to tap into the students to fill the empty seats. I'm not sure how you do that, but there has to be a way for fans to let Clemson know whether or not they're attending so students can be offered the tickets.
Any ideas?

they can donate them to students to use. I like that idea a lot.
I would also consider some sort of penalty for owners of seats that routinely sit empty.

I sit 2 rows behind home basket and live in Laurens, one hour and 15 minutes away from Littlejohn. I have gotten a hotel room in the area, gotten up at 5:45 to drive to work and drag all day. Week night games at 9PM ARE NOT “fan friendly “ for a fairly rural campus.

I did too, and we admitted even back then that sometimes we went to see the other team. I saw Ralph Sampson, Len Bias, and the NC team with Worthy, Jordan and Perkins. Of course we were yelling our heads off supporting the Tigers, but we also were realistic with our expectations.

You constantly rail at people for complaining about everything, even when things are going well. You do realize you are one of those, right?
Forget the attendance and just enjoy the moment. Your complaints won't add butts to the seats.

Probably more than anyone else on TigerNet.
But it's laughable that I continue reading posts here, as recently as this morning, bragging about more fans showing up.
Well yes, more fans are showing up, but that's not something to brag about when we are having a historic season and there are still thousands of empty seats in our arena (which isn't huge to begin with).

It does take time for momentum to catch on, particularly when the consistency in performance has been a bit up and down. They keep winning and more and more people will keep showing up.

That is the answer. No one expected this great season and it was too late to buy a decent season ticket. If this keeps up then it will be hard to get a ticket. Duke and NC did not sell out overnight but after a proven history.

I honestly don't see a lot of comments where people are falling on their swords defending us as an outstanding basketball fan base. Most see some excitement coming back and the play on the court is fueling that. I don't think we are focused on our ranking position for fan support; we just want to see the ranking of the team keep going up.

Were you there? If so do you have kids in school? If a football game were played on a Tuesday night at 9:00pm I’m guessing a large majority wouldn’t be able to make it. Let’s see what happens Saturday before we cast judgement comparing to football.

Way below average. There are goobers on here who go out of their way to hate on a winning basketball team. I get the 9 p.m. excuse. What I don't get is closing the largest basketball parking lot right before the season so the football program can have a sidewalk. Clemson has a long history of ignoring basketball.

They talk about our fans camping out for tickets that one time decades ago, and Digger Phelps saying come that Littlejohn is a really tough place to play.
It’s hilarious that they act like we are the second coming of Cameron Indoor Stadium, if only we won more and our coach didn’t play such a boring brand of basketball.

What are you talking about? Other fans would have stormed the ADs demanding a change from the insanity.
It's natural for all fans in all sports to come to the games more when the team is putting out a good product.
It's never been the fans, Mrs. Brownell. It's been the less than mediocre product we've seen for most of his career. Show me more schools with 2 top 40 finishes in 12 years who come out like ours.
Thanks to Coach Donlon, the product has been changed. Hopefully Brad doesn't overtake things anytime soon.

over the years saying that Clemson fans will support basketball great if we win. These posts are typically accompanied by stories about sitting in the aisles for the game against Duke in 1980, or camping out for tickets against Wake Forest when Rick Barnes was here.
These posts are always blaming our basketball team for not being better. If only our team were better, we'd have outstanding fans who show up and are loud.
Well, we are off to our best ACC start, EVER. We were playing a conference rival. And we had THOUSANDS of empty seats in Littlejohn.
As I said, I fully expect the same excuses to be used. And I was right.

Seriously, you're going to pick this argument now? You cra cra judge. If we had 6000 that's fantastic. It's not excuses, it's reality. Now, had it been a top 5 team and the game meant a conference title, it'd be jammed pack.
You do realize 99% of our fabbase live more than 50+ miles from Clemson. And yes, people in Columbia or Charlotte would be home like 2 am. Not excuses, reality.

We shouldn't need people driving 2-3 hours to a basketball game to have better fan turnout.
I get it, 9:00 PM games aren't ideal. If people decide that it's too inconvenient to attend, for whatever reason, that's fine.
But don't tell me that we have these great fans who show up to support a winner when we are setting records this year and we still have thousands of empty seats at Littlejohn.
Just own it, we are an average at best fan base for basketball. Period.
I wouldn't be complaining about attendance otherwise, but when people act like we deserve a medal for selling out Littlejohn when we are #1 in the ACC and playing a top 25 Duke team at home on a Saturday afternoon, they need to be called out.

Most of those million people have no connection to Clemson University. Those that have moved to the area would not have much of a reason to hop on the Clemson basketball bandwagon before this year given our mediocre performance the last 12 years. It's not like flipping a switch that they will suddenly become Clemson basketball fans. Build a quality, consistently high-performing program and we will attract some of those million people that don't already have a Clemson connection.

Yes, that's the way it works. It took 12 years to lose many Clemson basketball fans that have walked away from our program. They ain't all coming back instantaneously with a good showing for half of ACC schedule for 1 year (after losing to bad teams to start the year). Fandom is not a light switch that you seem to be expecting.

Perhaps you should rethink your strategy of denigrating our entire fanbase while presenting yourself as the marketing face of Brad Brownell, Inc. It isn’t working.

even when we are winning.
I mean, it's obvious the winning is all because of Bradley, and so Bradley will get an extension and handcuff Clemson with buyouts so stupidly large that we will be forever stuck with him, so the JKbot should be thrilled.

You’re crying about 6,000 fans at 9pm on a Tuesday night. Against an 8 win GT team? You do realize people have small children, right? You do realize people work 2nd and 3rd shift right? You do realize people live hours away and have to be at work at 7am or earlier, right? Do you live in a dream world? Only the students are to blame in my opinion. They live in campus.

But some of our fans need to stop acting like we have this incredible basketball fan base who will support our team well when they win. Last night is evidence that they won't.
Our fan base is not spectacular when it comes to basketball. They are below average. It's time for them to own it.

Both are “in it for the clicks” and will say whatever will “stir the stink” the most . . . they must be lonely folks to crave attention so desperately.
While I never read his Football Related Posts, as he’s proven his troll-worthy-ness in the arena, I oftentimes read his Basketball Views . . . sometimes I even agree with him on these . . .
However . . . He, like Clemgalalways® stated, “is cra cra” on this line of thinking . . . It is his right to pursue this line of thought, but he should at least post proof that he, himself, was in attendance last night . . . a simple snap shot would suffice.
If he can’t do that, he needs to issue an apology to all for not being as supportive as he should be.
As of this thread, I’ll forgo any future Basketball entries he/she makes. Judge Keller® might as well ignore me also.
Have a Great Day Tigers!!! (You know who you are.)

Weather is a factor when you have to park in a field. My car got stuck in the mud at Clemson a couple of years ago and I'm not quite ready to do that again, especially not late at night.

They aren't excuses, they're reasons. If the place isn't packed on a Saturday or Sunday that's one thing, but weekday games are a different story.
Many of the posters (myself included) have kids (in addition to not living in the area). I guess we're terrible fans because we actually take care of our kids (dinner, practices, homework, etc). If I have to choose between being a deadbeat dad or a "bad fan" I'll take the latter. I guess the team will have to play some games without me.

The point isn't that people should show up if it doesn't work for them.
The point is that many people here brag about how great our fan base is and how we will support basketball well if we win more. Well, we are winning more, and there were thousands of empty seats last night.
So stop claiming to be an exceptional fan base. We show up for big games when we are winning, and don't show up for less appealing games, even when we are winning. That makes us...average.
Own it. The proof is in the pudding.

From 1979 to 1984, I was often on the court with student fans and always at the game, occasionally with dates. From 1985 to 3rd or 4th year of Brownell's tenure, I traveled from Savannah for 2-3 home games per year sometimes with my son. Enjoyed pulling for Tigers vs. Jordan, Perkins, Worthy, Rodney Rogers, Lefty, Bias, Dean, Gminski, Coach K, Dean, and so many greats. Watched Ellis' last game. Loved the Barnes' years. Attended three final fours, dozens of NCAA regionals, multiple once-tough-to-get ACC tourneys.
It became bad basketball. One-and-done talented but immature freshmen from good teams leaving for the NBA vs. Brownell & players who froze up in key games and key moments.
Happy for Clemson Basketball players and fans this season ... and for Judge and his steadfast support of Tiger Hoops. Still not watching but hope this team keeps it going and wins the ACC Tourney!

I feel like the 9 pm games the students should pick up the slack. Its a very late end for working people. Most prob live in greenville which is another hour to get home. Although i do love the GRIT after dark… i just cant make multiple 9pms.
What would be great is if the season ticket people could donate tickets to get more students in or move them down to the lower bowl when the game is not well attended. There should be enough students to fill littlejohn.

I was in from Ohio and went over. Had a great time. People there were good support. Lots of empty seats. If you don't want to go find someone. Lots of good seats were unused and this team deserves support. They are good and play hard.

Facts:
It was a 9:00, midweek game. That is a tough sell.
It was Georgia Tech 1-9 in the ACC. If you will recall the Furman football game this year. It was not a great crowd. Lesser opponent, rain. Not excuses, facts.
Why can't you look at the positives?
Our next home game against Miami is already sold out.
Prediction: FSU on 2/15 mid week, 7:00 PM, better opponent, much better crowd than last night.
It's like you're setting up an excuse for Brownell if the second half of the season isn't as successful as the first.
Newsflash: It probably won't be. We have some tough opponents on the road. Starting this weekend we play FSU away. Our history there is not good. Games at UNCheat and UVA will be tough outs.
Just enjoy the ride. We're having a great season. We won by double digits last night. Why the need to find a negative?

I am enjoying it. A lot!
I wouldn't expect a sellout or close to it last night if I didn't hear so often on TigerNet that we have amazing fans who will support a winning basketball team.
This isn't me looking for something to complain about. It's me believing people who assure me that if we win more we will have great fan support. We are #1 in the ACC, off to our best ACC start in program history, and we still have thousands of empty seats in Littlejohn.
Again, our fan base for basketball is average. It isn't exceptional. The facts support this.

Our basketball program and coach is average. They are not exceptional. The facts support this. Kind of a chicken or egg conundrum.
Many basketball fans have been turned off by the mostly lackluster performance in the Brownell tenure. You can see many examples of that in this thread. We are having a great year but it's not like those fans are going to turn around over night. Keep building the program in a positive way and the fans will come.

Actually I have not missed one televised game this year and I am loving this team. I am enjoying every minute of it. Actually, the really close games (like VT) that send my blood pressure through the roof aren't that fun until the final buzzer with the Tigers on top. You can find me and few diehard Clemson fans in TAC every game. I live more than 500 miles from Clemson, so I am not able to attend many basketball games until I retire back to SC.
You obviously missed the point in my posts. You don't create instant fans with success for half a season. Fans will come if the program sustains success - both those who gave up and left Clemson basketball fandom and brand new fans. But do not expect it to happen overnight. Using a 77% Littlejohn crowd for a late game on Tuesday against a poor conference opponent to denigrate the entire fanbase is not appropriate.

We’ve made multiple NCAA Tournaments during that span. We are making another this year.

Judge, here is what I see as the biggest issue with you. You want the same support and passion from fans for basketball as there is for football and that simply is not realistic. If this program had six consecutive Final Four appearances and 2 NCs, winning at least 20 games a year 11 or 12 years in a row, and recruiting Top 15 classes a dozen years in a row, then you would have the hottest ticket in town and all the resources you needed. This is not the reality for basketball.
It is true to say that fan support is increasing as our success on the court is increasing and if that continues in a consistent way, I believe you will eventually see the excitement return that you are looking for but you are going to have to be patient, give it time, and hope this is just the beginning of a consistently good to great program.

Teams perform well, attendance goes up. Teams fall off and attendance goes down. If you want a consistently sold-out coliseum you have to build a consistently high-performing team that does it year in and year out. That is how you become a football and/or basketball school.

I don't believe she wants, or even expects, the same type of support for basketball here that football generates. She just wants you to shut your mouth about Brad's poor results here over the years and uses the comparisons between the two to help drive that point home. Brad should never, ever, be held to a standard associated with winning, because it's only Clemson basketball, not football. And with so many fans on here more drawn to football, they simply have no right to expect anything other than mediocrity and the occasional glimmer of hope.

I don't expect basketball to ever be supported as well as football at Clemson. It would take generations for that shift to happen, and would require a monumental change not only in how Clemson athletics are managed at the university level, but also how people view it culturally (e.g., how they spend their free time, how they raise their children, etc.).
I'm totally fine with football being the most important sport at Clemson. What I have a problem with is fans who don't support basketball at Clemson worth a crap, but expect the coach to have us in the NCAA Tournament every year. It doesn't work that way.
Again, I wouldn't expect a sellout or near-sellout for a 9:00 PM mid-week game if I hadn't been told for years on TNet that Clemson fans will support a winning team. I understand the reasons people use for not attending last night, but having several thousand empty seats last night is evidence that we have average at best basketball fan support.

I appreciate your loyalty to Brad, and by extension, Clemson basketball but I’ll say again, you don’t read the room well. Your comments reek of preemptive butthurt.
I started attending BB games at Clemson in the late 60’s, but the first coach I remember was Locke.
Being an old guy, my gif may not have uploaded, but that is probably representative of the fear of some of the negative posters
I love watching this team. They’re fun, they give great effort and they’ve shown that even with injuries, when one star has an off night, others can pick up the slack. This means that we are talented. The ACC being down does not detract from that. But, I think Brad needs to take advantage of the down league to establish upward mobility. This will only be accomplished by continuing to upgrade talent
If he can do this, I would love to see as our coach for a long time. If he can’t, we need to find someone who can recruit in this new world order

ND at NCSU was just about the same - 76%. For a 7:00 game, which is a much easier time to attend for most fans, and in a pretty big metropolitan area.
FSU only got to 73% against their biggest rival - Miami - for a 7:00 game.
I'd say GOOD JOB by the Clemson basketball faithful that showed up to a late game, which was on TV (ACCN), against one of the bottom feeders of the conference.

Good news:
We only have four home games left, but three are sell outs.
Bad news:
We have six away games and four are on Saturdays. That will probably mean we will be playing at packed, hostile arenas.
I’m not sure that we can get more fans to week night games. Brownell seems to be going after the student attendance, which is good.
There seemed to be poor attendance last night at Syracuse, Florida State, and NCSU.

Everyone knows Clemson is a football first school. I haven’t seen anyone argue that point. As far as your endless whining that someone said Clemson fans will support Clemson basketball if they are winning, that is correct and everything is relative. How many fans do you think would have shown up last night if we were 5-5 in the conference and in 10th place (which is about average for our b-ball team over the last 10 years)? Fans are supporting more than in previous years. More fans like me are also watching on tv. Basketball season tickets are a pretty demanding commitment and this team historically just hasn’t earned the trust most people need to make that commitment. That is reality.
If in your mind we have an average fan base when it comes to basketball, it is because we have had an average at best basketball team historically. I haven’t seen anyone try to tell you different. Most are just trying to tell you to stop whining and trolling and enjoy the success we are having this year without dragging others into whatever drama you create in your mind. If there is a Mrs. Judge Keller, I really feel sorry for her. Don’t understand why you must incessantly troll Clemson fans at every opportunity. Must be true that misery loves company

no doubt about it - it's tickets sold
there is no way in h#!! there were 7000 in there last night - the upper arena sections (other than the student sections) were less than 1/4 full
just looked at the stats for the USC Upstate game and the listed attendance was 5000 - i assure you there were less than 3000 in there

Brownell sucked the oxygen out of the program

Leaving primarily a core group of supporters to spend time and money going to games. It is not a simple light switch - to turn back on the people who he ran off thru the years. Yes, they will come back by three things. 1. Winning/ competitive 2. Fun to watch - interesting 3. A leader who builds program and relates to the fans.
None of the 3 are Brownells strong suit.
One good season does not bring in the casual fans. Fans who spend time and money.
JK - don’t blame Clemson fans - blame Brownell. 12 years it took to have a strong start with a struggling ACC.

And the magic spark was a couple assistants that he’s known since UNC-W. That only cost a couple hundred thousand more than we were already spending. This was the pie in the sky, massive institutional support move that took 12 years to figure out?

Because being upset about 7,700 for a:
- Tuesday night game, - 9pm tipoff, - vs 2nd worst team in the conference
Really comes off petty and immature.
We had over 7,000 people there, won by 21, and moved to 9-1 in the conference for the first time and this is what you want to cry about??
C'mon man...

I also wonder why the ire of this post is directed at the season ticket holders who couldnt make the niner. You dont know how many times ive sat in my own stadium of littlejohn surrounded by dookies or tarholes chanting louder than our fans.
Im my mind it is a much worse offense to sell to opposing fans than it is to not be able to make a niner.

We did great for a 9:00 game on a weeknight. There's nothing wrong with Clemson fans, Mrs Brownell. Stop trying to bring down everything about Clemson except your husband.
Stop your bit ching about fans, and realize Billy Donlon is the difference.

Another 9pm Tuesday game against GT is not an excuse for ~ 75% capacity. It’s the actual bonafide reason. Only the amount of students in attendance is a legit variability. The rest is basic demographics of who is within reasonable proximity to attend.

It’s been mentioned but never missed many while I was in school or lived up there… but you have to remember Clemson is not in the middle of the state and it’s a haul for most fans to make a 9 pm tip on a Tuesday night. IMO that’s the only reason… it’s hard for ppl to make midweek travels without taking time off work which a lot of us don’t have the fortune to just do whenever they want. I think you were bored and just wanted to start a convo bc the sat games have been electric , if they weren’t I would agree with you but come on it’s normal
