I am not against the screen pass if is imaginative and can be effective. Spence's screen pass was annoying. As far as DJU, he struggled to hit the screen passes or any pass many times. Klubnik should benefit from him a lot more. I just hope they can teach our WRS and line to block on these screens. If they come unpredictably then it can have great success.

You nailed it. WRs haven't blocked well in years, and the OL has been inconsistent. These must change if the offense gets back on track.

The problem with our screen game before was that Streeter (and Elliot before him) called WR screens when DB's were in press coverage or rollup zone and right in the grill of the WR before the ball ever got there "slowly" after DJU went through his windup and delivered it. Poor play calling was a huge factor. Look at the TCU highlight video from last year. When Riley calls screens, it is like the WR is out in the yard playing alone due to the soft coverage on that side. Also, Riley keeps WR's on the move as they screen. Streeter had them stationary and they were sitting targets. Also, watch for RB's to be involved more in the screen game under Riley, which will be huge! It might seem the same but it will be totally different. Can't wait to watch it happen!

x1000 THUMBS UP THIS POST

It all was exposed vs. LSU in 2020. No Jeff Scott and no valid OC to backfill.
Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Ohio State would have been back-to-back-to-back with Clemson's 2018-2020 personnel.

Tony Elliott and Brandon Streeter were the same caliber Offensive Coordinators.

When TL16 is not their QB, they fail so fast.
I can't believe we let it happen either. We fell for Tony Elliott's tear jerking story and Brandon Streeter - just chalked it up to coach speak.

Rant over. I'm never forgiving Coach Elliott or Streeter for all of this. DJU wasn't even the problem. ( He will be NFL )

Agree with everything up until DJU NFL. Please edit that out. It cheapens the great point about Elliott, who was overcompensated by talent and overrated as such. I understand DJU could’ve been better than what the OC set him up for, but I also saw enough isolated evidence that he doesn’t have it above the shoulders.

Totally disagree with you about Elliott and Streeter both. Elliott was elite until his whole offense ended up injured in 2021. Streeter battled the same issues in 2022. And DJ completely lost all confidence in his WRs and his self. The Clemson Offense was a mash unit on the Oline and at WR the past 2 years. And during this time the team built depth at both positions. Now if the WRs stay healthy (Collins, Stellato, and Randall) and the OLine keeps 5 starters all year this offense will show drastic improvement. Funny thing is it would be the same if Elliott or Streeter were the coordinator this year as well. Play calling was severely handicapped the last 2 years based on personnel. Clemson's success this year all rests on starters staying healthy. 2018/2019 that happened and the team was 29-1 with 2 National Championship games played. 2020 was a COVID year and frankly with all the rule changes should be counted as an asterisk! 2023 with God's mercy this team is relatively injury free you will see Clemson back to normal ELITE! Go Tigers!

designed to get on the edge quickly and wear down the interior defense.

One of the many benes of playing in the Big 12 is the lack of defense. Iowa State was the only top 25 defense and they were dead last in the Big 12 with zero offense in a no D league.

I'm excited about the change if only for the lack of film of Garrett's way compared to the encyclopedias, which had been created of the ClemsonO and its tendencies over the many years. Will be interested to see how many moving parts Riley has, if only to help Cade with some keys/reads. Moving away from pre-snap movement was as much a practice of reducing self-inflicted wounds, which made 2021 and the amount of penalties in some games stand out even more.

It'll be interesting how an overall better defensive league approaches Coach Riley. Good times.

Will Shipley #1
Kabe Klubnik #2 (QB is skill position I guess)

Dabo Swinney #3 (Head Coach is definitely skilled position)

All of the defense since Tigers will have the ball more and score more....part of the greatness of the Power Rangers was that they were typically fresh, allowing them to dominate and be aggressive in short bursts.

Excited about this year, bring on Duke and lets get this season rolling... Go Tigers

Ah, a man after my knowledge, love it.

1. Our offense scored in under 2 minutes many of the times they scored. Defense right back on field but having had an offense that put up points very often.

2. We beat most teams badly, backups got plenty of time and it was stress-free considering the score which was not the case in 2022 for the most part.

3. Easy to pin ears back every play when ahead by multiple scores.

4. Stats do not tell the entire story of a game, but they do provide details that can help a team get better.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, very explosive offense in 2018, but 2022 D did not...

2

Jun 20, 2023, 2:01 PM

lack for rest because of how the games were managed, game control, holding snap much longer into the clock. CU's offense average ~76.4 plays per game. The defense was never gassed, lazy at times, which Dabo called out and just football dumb others. How talented players could not manage simple press-bail at times had to drive the defensive staff to the ledge. Going into 2022 the big question was replacing 5 starters in the back 7 and it bit Clemson too many times.

Even a defense in 2021 that was deeper in the back end, but spent more time on the field[CU 80th in TOP, 70 P/G], finished Top 10.

Most HUNHs have gone the way of the dodo, defenses caught up and defenses afforded time for substitutions, so it will be interesting if Riley goes quick snap after a 5+ on 1st or varies by possession? Game control still falls to the HC, so something to look forward to in 23.

Re: Yes, very explosive offense in 2018, but 2022 D did not...

2

Jun 20, 2023, 2:38 PM

I completely agree with that. Honestly the defense had a bend but not break mentality. Many times a team would get a couple first downs or get into the redzone, but would end up kicking FG or turnover.
In many ways those defenses could have been much better but they still did more than enough to dominate a "world beater" Alabama team by 4 TD's and I always refer to it as 5 TD considering our Tigers drove down inside their 5 yard line and let time run out...Also, the Lamecock game where the QB throws for 500+ yards and allows 5 TD's but still won by 3 TD's.

I think by any measurement, the defense on the field last year did not perform at their optimal level very often. You had flashes, you had some unfortunate familial situations for player(s), but overall the defense just did not get it done for whatever reason(s).

Enjoy chatting about football, nice to bounce some thoughts off others... Thanks for listening and replying with your impressive knowledge!!

Yes, we could not just line up and run, so the screens to Sammy were our run game.

Re: Which of Clemson's skill players will benefit most from Riley's...

I would like to see us play a 2 back set more often and throw screens to the running backs. If we do that I think both running backs could see a lot of benefit, both in the screen game and the running game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

DJU's incredible problem with inaccuracy was not just

1

Jun 20, 2023, 6:01 PM

confined to completely missing people. His lack of touch just totally destroyed the timing on a lot of our passing plays. And, an out-of-sync pass play is almost always doomed to fail.

I only say almost, because there are exceptions where a receiver makes several people miss and still makes Shinola out of Feces.

Klubnick. I know most folks will say....

2

Jun 21, 2023, 9:38 PM

...Shipley or Mafah.

But, I will say

1. Klubnick. It will give him more time to throw on passes he isn't throwing screens. And, it will also slow down the blitz, not just the front 4.

2. TE's. Pick one. If the defense is worried about swing passes and screen passes it opens up the seam for the TE.
