That's during the season, prior to postseason. We got there in the last regular season poll, during the regular season. Since it was the end of the regular season, we didn't play a regular season game ranked #1.
Clean up the question and you'll get the answer you want, for whatever reason it is that you want it.

By attaining #1 during the regular season, Clemson was the 1981 Regular Season Champion.
And by keeping the ranking through the postseason, Clemson was the 1981 National Champion.
Am I wrong?

It is cool to know, however, that this will be the first game at Death Valley with the Tigers as #1.
