Wife wrote check for granddaughter's birthday on Thursday last week....

put it in envelope to her. I placed it in our mailbox. I noticed next morning that door was down on box, envelope gone, and flag up knowing carrier had not been by box. So wife sees transaction on her account to Walmart for $448 and calls her bank reporting fraud. She realizes tonight that it was the check. So my question is how do they change everything on check and cash check with no ID? Maybe a Walmart employee? Isn't this a federal crime?

They could use their own banking app to deposit almost any check into their account.
Of course, that's super traceable.
The account number is also listed on your checks, so if they're smart, it's possible to setup a sale using your account number instead of checks. If this could be setup with anomalous PayPal or something, you can link those to your account by number instead of a card or something.
Hope the bank squares you up soon. I've had 1 hack on a spare account for 500,and it took a month to get it back.

Taking the time to investigate much less prosecute them.
You have to trace the records. Trace the account. Then report the evidence. Then a DA has an attorney file charges. Then you have a court date. Arrest the person. Take them to jail. Go through a legal process. Probably costs $2500 to prosecute and charge and by then they're released that's about the fine they pay.
Thats the cold, angering math.
Had full blown identity theft once. Dude took out an 8K loan and bought two massive TVs at a Walmart in VA. I caught it. Reported it. Account was closed. Had to file a police report. Talked to a detective who could care less. Police report was needed to freeze credit or something. They closed the loan account and I didn't pay. I'm 100% positive they did zero investigation. Never heard from the police again. And I'm sure thst guy is probably still watching that TV.
Irony is we invest so much money into law enforcement, that smaller crimes are not prosecuted due to the cost. Cops drive around in 70k SUVs with 20k in options with 10k of equipment and a whatever salary, they're not going to waste time on smaller crimes... which is sad.

Well, this one time, a cop knocks on our door on a Sunday afternoon and says "Is MsLovin home?"
I says, "Yes sir, she's right here officer" (sorry MsLovin).
They had picked up this dude for simple crime and they found her check in his pocket. Then they prosecuted him for stealing our mail.
So we don't put checks in the mail anymore.

This is exactly why all my outgoing mail goes into the box at the Post Office.

I certainly don't trust the Sin-ur-cur USPS carriers and there have been many reports of mailbox theft in the area.

Used some kinda chemicals (prob meth) to erase the payee and amount and change the payee to Walmarts.
Couldn't they also create duplicate checks?
Or if it was me, I would have snapped a photo and edited the image in microsoft paint.

Scan onto paint then change the date, print out and laminate onto a hotel key card or something.
But they didn’t scan them back then so it was just that easy.

And ALWAYS mail checks at the post office. Probably someone in the neighborhood who noticed that you put mail in the box - that red flag is a figurative red flag as well.
Although as has been said, once they get the account and routing number, they don’t need the physical check.
A while back there was a clerk at a local drugstore who was washing checks (using a q-tip and alcohol) to change the amount just a little bit and pocketing the change. It took several months for someone to notice because I guess most people don’t balance their accounts to the penny and the amounts were less than $10 each time. Of course this was back when a lot of people still used checks.
Sucks that people suck.

send off for my LCB stuff. I also just sent it right from the post office because I don't know the last time I owned a stamp. Crying same that there once was a time where sending a check in the mail was a nearly harmless thing.
If you've got time and anybody will help, I'd try to press charges.

once I left my paycheck in my jeans pocket

this was a long time ago when I worked on a golf course as a teenager and got paid by physical check.
Found check after washing jeans - it was PERFECTLY blank. All the pen ink had disappeared. The washing machine had bleached the check out, it looked like a new blank check.
If I was a crook, I could have written it for any amount at the WalMart or any store. But I took it back to work and got a new one. The accountant lady was shocked that this could happen.
So I'm sure there is a chemical wash out there that can bleach out all handwriting.

Sends birthday/holiday/whatever in batches.
Separate check in each card.
Cards get wrapped in aluminum foil (shrugging emoji)
Takes it to the post office and sends it with tracking. Hasn't required a signature yet, but I'm sure that's coming.

I've had the same book for over five years...might write one/year...and not happy about it. I look at the recipient like they're an alien.
