What would y'all say is most likely to happen w/ expansion?
Jun 23, 2012, 8:17 PM
|
|
A) We go to the Big 12. There is obviously some smoke.
B) We go to the SEC. There's a resilient smoke. The SEC could be the first 16-team major conference.
C) The ACC expands. They become the first 16-team major conference, and we stay right where we are.
With the right teams, ACC football marketability could vastly increase. With Syracuse and Pitt, the ACC is already the srongest set of college basketaball teams. This just makes too much sense.
What is most likely? Personally I think C is what will happen.

I think there has been some truth mixed in with some BS and misinformation regarding expansion and the Big 12. I have no secret inside connections, but my best guess is that we have been considering our options, thus talking to the Big 12 for some time. Some sort of realignment is likely over the next few years given an evolving playoff system and bigger tv money that heavily favors certain conferences. Given those inevitabilities, our AD/Prez/BOT would be foolish and negligent not to have contingency plans, therefore it stands to reason they have had discussions with other conferences. Considering all of the smoke around the Big 12, not to mention that it's understandable why the Big 12 would want us and FSU (expanding footprint with two great schools with national recognition while tearing down a competitor), and it's understandable why we would want to leave the ACC ($$$ and relevance), I have to believe there is something to it. Will we go? Would it be the best thing? I don't know, but I fully believe it is being seriously considered should an official invite be extended.

this is well thought out and well said.. I also think we stay with the ACC until something just HAS TO BE DONE because of the $$$$.... I am still not convinced that if the move to the Big 12 looks like it will happen that the SEc will ask us and FSU to join... that is what makes the most sense to me..the ACC goes for big time baskb and swoffie looks like he is great!!ACC adds Lou and some other baskb schools?????

I don't know for sure, but that time could be close.
I don't think the SEC wants us as bad as the Big 12. The SEC already has a solid presence and TV/media footprint in both SC and Florida (we may be a package deal with FSU). Plus, I don't think the Coots want us in the SEC, and they would have some say in it. The Big 12 would be expanding their footprint eastward by adding us and FSU, they would be dismantling the ACC (a competitor), and they may be fulfilling a promise made to WVU when they joined to add more eastern teams.

just made it clear to the SEC they won't pay up for their adding Texas A&M and Missouri, 2 programs with a pretty good football history and in significantly larger states than the state of South Carolina. If CBS won't pay up for those 2, they sure won't for Clemson. That's why the SEC is going to develop its own network, which means going into new states for greater revenue rates.

It could be that. Or, it could be that they are trying to improve the bottom line by cost cutting. Or, it could be they are trying to push the SEC to go to 9 conference football games. Take your pick.

The last SEC expansion didn't increase the inventory of games available to CBS, and since it is already broadcasting the games nationally it didn't open any new markets. Until the SEC goes to 9 conference games it doesn't matter how many teams the SEC adds, CBS will still only have X numbers of games available to them.

This could be Clemson's saving grace re: admission to the SEC. If CBS won't up the ante for the SEC's adding aTm and Mizzou, then the conference has nothing to lose in admitting Clemson except for the addition of another highly competitive football program with a very large and loyal fan base. Note: nothing stays the same all the time. Today's goat could be tomorrow's prince.
I do NOT want to see Clemson in the SEC, HOWEVER this SEC network deal could open the door for the Piedmont Tigers. Stay tuned.

C, but I would argue that the ACC, as currently constituted,
Jun 23, 2012, 8:58 PM

cannot survive long term without the addition of two out of ND, PSU, and WVU.
Don't listen to the crap which says that the ACC contract is primarily lower because of performance on the field. It's lower because of lower overall interest, owing to the size of the member schools, the prevalence of private schools, and a basketball-first mentality.
Even when the ACC was holding its own with the SEC for a decade or so, the SEC and Big 10 had the advantage - they're all HUGE schools that any yokel in the state can adopt. And the passion in the stands translates to HD, multiplying their advantage.
With this in mind, I'd argue that only ND, PSU, and WVU can contribute to saving the ACC. I doubt we get any two of these, so I don't think the financial challenges we face can be remedied. Having said that, it may be wise to stay in the ACC (for a few years at least) in order to prevent its implosion, which could place other current ACC teams in the SEC and us on an island in the Big XII. I think if we hold it together for a few years, we might be able to swing the SEC.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I think we will stay in the ACC regardless. I don't think the SEC is going to expand anymore. I think a move to the Big 12 would be a huge mistake. I think the ACC will become a player again in football thanks to the resurgence of the football schools: Clemson, Fla State, Miami, Va Tech, Ga Tech, Maryland. Pitt and Syracuse will also improve quickly in the ACC. That's my opinion. And since none of you can see into the future, it's as good as anybody's.

My concern is just that I don't think it's really about the product on the field, but rather the fannies in the stands. As a result, the ACC's TV deal and bowl ties paled in comparison to the SEC and Big 10, even when the product on the field was essentially equal for a long while.

Ah, but it's not the fannies in the stands that is driving the market. It's the fannies available to sit in front of a TV. The ACC has locked up virtually the entire east coast. Lots of TV's. Lots of fannies. And I might add the fannies in Pennsylvania are a LOT wealthier than the fannies in Mississippi and Alabama.

Lots of TVs in the ACC's area, but relatively few that have an interest in the ACC schools.
The smaller schools hurt here, and the private schools hurt even worse. After all, it's a lot easier for someone who didn't go to a particular school to "adopt" a large "University of XYZ" because (1) you probably know someone who went there and (2) they live in XYZ!
I believe that the Big 10, SEC, etc. have a product that's more salable locally due to the nature of their schools. Thus they have better attendance AND viewership in that local area. In addition, due to the better attendance and resulting extra energy, they also have a product that's more salable nationally.
Anyway, thanks for the discussion - I truly hope you're right, as it's certainly a best-case scenario for Clemson!

Well, here is what I know about TV marketing. They don't give a #### about what school has what interest in what sport. They only care about how many butts they can get at, and how much money those butts control. And that is why the ACC consulted with ESPN BEFORE inviting Syracuse and Pitt. A lot of butts. A LOT of money. You give these guys Clemson vs Syracuse in New York state, on TV, and I guarantee you that money will be made by all. A lot of you guys are looking at the small picture, and in a small frame of time.

It's not that I don't hope you're right - are you arguing that the hope is that the ACC can build interest and viewership in the northeast that the northeastern colleges haven't been able to build on their own? Why would this work better in New York than it's worked in Massachusetts?
Thanks for explaining.

Almost no chance Clemson(or FSU) goes to the SEC. They don't want to add schools in markets they already have.
I'd say it's 60/40 that Clemson goes to the Big 12. I could see something happening that makes the deal fall through. The only way an ACC expansion keeps Clemson from moving is Notre Dame coming in as a full member.

I feel like it'll be C. I think there's some smoke from Big XII sources but, at the end of the day, I don't think we or FSU will be going. I think the travel will just be too much; not the cost necessarily, but the lack of regional match-ups I think will just be too much.
Maybe I'm wrong, but it does seem like Swinney's 'clearing the air' about expansion lead to a windfall of recruits. That coincided with the camp, so I'm not sure how much of an impact that had, however.
I doubt we leave the ACC unless we just cannot make it to the national championship as a member. I think Barker is very much in love with the academic cache that comes along with the ACC, too.

SEC for both FSU & CU.
1)What will come closer to happening ? the ACC will be the conference to 16 teams.
2) ND says h3ll no and 6 teams make a mass exodus to the BIG 12,giving them 16 teams and enough eastern teams to make it easier on all that move.

Since Clemson is located in a small, rural town, (and football generates so much revenue) I hope the administration chooses the best option available to them that puts the football program into the most elite available conference and allows Clemson University to generate the most revenue.

5 more years. Other than ND and Penn St., no other 2 teams will make a difference. I don't think either of those schools will join anytime soon. UCONN and Rutgers would be a disaster and only further the downfall of the ACC.
We may see Notre Dame added for all sports except football, go back to an 8 game conference schedule and give ND the option of scheduling some of the ACC schools for regular season and take the BCS bowl spot ONLY if they have the highest ranking, but not allow them to compete in the ACC championship game.
