You can't just play this game with auto mfg

The R&D for new models/designs takes years to put together, as does the tooling required to produce them. The govt. is basically forcing them to produce vehicles that nobody wants, and in doing so they'll have to mark up the price on the ones people do want, pricing more people out of the new car market. They'll focus on producing higher priced/higher margin vehicles, you see that in the boating industry right now. RIP Henry Ford's dream. Since our economy is driven largely by auto manufacturing, this will have quite the ripple effect as all sorts of facilities have to scale back production. For instance, BMW's production has stayed pretty steady here in Greer, they're even expanding to build a stamping facility...So we're doing alright down here. But a lot of the guys in Detroit are getting rekt right now because they're dependent on the Big 3 and their usually high volumes.
This is another instance of people who have no idea what they're talking about making policy...They either have zero foresight of the future ramifications, or this is intentionally designed to eliminate private vehicle ownership from middle and lower classes. I have no doubt the next step would be the mother of all cash for clunkers programs to squeeze the used car market and reduce transportation options for lower income people.

right now their R&D is focused on electrics and hydrogen, and making a more car fuel-efficient does not take a lot of effort, just less fun to drive.

don't have the energy grid/infrastructure to sustain them even if they did. Govt. emissions/safety requirements are a big hindrance to fuel efficiency as well, so they're squeezing manufacturers at both ends. I haven't heard much out of hydrogen cell development lately, I know Toyota was working on that tech awhile back.

charging an EV is like running 7 microwaves for 2 hours.
Hydrogen, from what I understand, will replace diesel for long-haul transport and industrial machinery. The batteries last much longer than lithium-ion, up to 250k miles, but they are less efficient and more expensive, at least right now. But I think over the long haul everything will move to hydrogen, it is just too expensive for most consumers right now. From what I have been told, lithium-ion and solar are just stepping stones to hydrogen.

Specifically when we figure out how to break hydrogen free from water economically. The problem now is the energy required to do that.
Currently, we're getting most hydrogen from breaking it away from fossil fuels (natural gas), so we're really not saving anything from a carbon footprint perspective.

In that, he could make more money leasing driverless cars by the mile than selling them to consumers, SO there is your they. When cars become autonomous, the next step is to take them away completely, so you are not far off there. It would be sold to us under the name of public safety.

Imagine a world where car/truck manufacturers design engines that are more efficienct. Such that you could drive a vehicle you drive today, but with 40mpg.
What truck driver wouldn’t want to spend less on gas?

This new level now required isn’t going to be reached by innovation so much as cuts in capabilities and massive increases in expense.

Everyone does. But as stated above, the ICE has reached about its max potential. The only thing to do now is reduce power and drag i.e. Toyota Corolla. Trucks are extremely clean and energy efficient for the amount of work that they can do. The most recent boosts in truck mpg were due to transmissions, turbos, and weight and little to do with extracting more energy from a gallon of gas.
Remember when the mustang became the mustang II?

That car. You couldn’t find a 5.0 without that mod in the 80’s.
If they handled worth a crap and had seats that didn’t look like they came from the Aerostar, I would have probably given in and bought one, but I was too in love with my 16v VW’s with glorious Recaro seats and BBS wheels.
