Question for structural engineers

1

Feb 28, 2023, 1:20 PM

I am working on an uncovered residential deck that has a girder running through the center of the deck.
How long can a triple 2x12 girder span that has attached to it (with hangars) 2x8x10 joist 16” O.C. on BOTH sides of the girder.
All wood members are pressure treated #2 pine with 5/4x 6 decking boards on top.

Thanks

Depends. Do you have 82.45 million piers under it supporting

Feb 28, 2023, 1:23 PM

it?

Did you then tie it down with a 200 foot hand dug foundation anchor every 6 inches?

If not, ooooh boy is it ever in trouble of blowing up.

Answer me 2 questions, then I'll answer:

1. Do you have the Red Robin app?
2. Pigs of hangars?

at a code minimum deflection of L/360 the max span would be

2

Feb 28, 2023, 2:29 PM

7'-0. but i would design it for a max. deflection of L/480 in which case the max span would be 6'6"

What is the total width of the deck?***

i assumed the "2x8x10 joist" ment they joist were 10 feet

Feb 28, 2023, 2:38 PM

long so at least 20 feet wide. but you know what happens when you assume. ;)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

well yeah, I guess I can't read. 11-10 by IRC but

I never max out decks. I always design them for 60 psf Live Load instead of 40 psf Live. Sometimes a lot of people end up on a deck and they fail a lot.

Design it for a bunch of drunks dancing.***

There's no big deck energy coming from OP

Too many unknowns

Feb 28, 2023, 3:31 PM

How high off of the ground?
What wind zone?
Hot tub later?

Could keep going but the trial is still going.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If it's just two feet off the ground it's OK if it fails?***

When in doubt make it stout!

Feb 28, 2023, 7:55 PM

Just add another pier and make sure the deck is lag bolted to the house. I've seen more than one fall due to trusting 16 coated nails. Mark Petroski, sociology professor (mid 1980s) had one fall over from the framers using nails to fasten it to the house.

Here in Charleston Most engineers will spec 5/8” through bolts instead of lag bolts.
