How Important is it with the true fan base to beat SC?
Nov 28, 2018, 9:39 AM
|

I have a friend at work who is a FSU fan....and he argues that our fan base would be ready to fire Dabo if we weren't competing for playoff year in and year out. He says our base has become spoiled and won't accept a 9-2 season and watch FSU go to the playoff. He stated even if Clemson beats USC 10 straight years, goes 9-2 and half of those seasons goes to ACC title game, that Dabo would be on hot seat if not already gone.
So what say ye guys - just how big is it to most to beat USC? Is it more important than winning the ACC 5 out of 10 years if we were to beat them 10 years straight? I would really love feedback on this. I know beating USC is huge to me because I don't want to hear that crowing for 364 days. But is it worth it if I know Dabo beats them for 10 straight years and gets us to ACC title only 5 of those 10 years? To me, yeah, I'd take that and Dabo would still be #1 in my book.
What say ye!!!!

it may be quite some time before FSU has to worry about playing for another conference championship let alone the CFP playoffs.
u5c is an insignificant boil on a maggots a$$. While beating them is important, winning Championships will ALWAYS be more important. That said, if Clemson is losing to the DirtPeckers, at least any time in the foreseeable future, it is unlikely we will be playing for any championships anyway.

Losing 5 in a row to the coots had never happened before. I think beating the coots is more important than going 9-3 or 10-2 every year. I'd rather have an 8-4 season and beat the coots than a 10-2 season with a loss.

If we dont beat the coots, we dont make the playoff.
Anyone who truly remembers how awful those "fans" of USuC behaved during their 5 year streak will never want to see Clemson lose that many in a row to them ever again.
Beating the coots to make the playoff is important out of necessity. Beating them to keep their beaks shut and stop them from trashing the state is a matter of principle.
Bottom line: never lose to the coots.

10 straight and win the ACC 5 of 10 that's an excellent decade. It's hard to win a conference. Ask the coaches we had from 1990 to 2010. Every coach we've had has beaten the coots so that's pretty much a given.

Put a different spin on it.. What if we knew we would loose to SC 60% of the time but were guaranteed to win the National Championship the same years we lost to them but loose the NC in the years we beat them? Which one would you take? I would take a NC 10 out of 10 times

We all know Dabo has 5 goals for every season. One is beating South Carolina. So far he has done O.K. Dabo knows that he might not accomplish these goals every year, but I certainly love his track record so far.

Lets see...
For me right now... it is Pitt. I have a Pitt(undergrad)/Clemson(grad) Alum friend and a Pitt coworker that I would love to end the 43-42 rubbing... on the Charlotte stage.
Normally, "personally" it would be Georgia or GT. Father-in-law, uncle, and my best man are UGAs. Other side of the family is GT too. GT is my dissertation advisor and my brother's father in law is a GT doc too. This is more on the "doc" of the family side as only my best friend does not has the "Dr" title.
Technically, beating VT has more "family" alumni, so for me at the thanksgiving diner table, that would be my mother in law, uncle (big booster), aunt, four cousins. Plus a lot of others (2nds spouses, etc). I have about 10-12 VT folks in the family.
FSU/NCSU has a lot more work-related folks with 4 a piece. If we played ECU that would be an interesting office dynamic.
Neighbors are Dook fans. My wife *nearly* attended Wake... but decided against it thankfully.
My sister-in-law is a USC alum.... and yes, she hate the Gamecocks too as she is a SoCal girl.
Coots, I have two cousins that "attended" but only one graduated. I don't see them hardly ever. SC is EXPECTED win.
As for what *Clemson* folks expect, I would point to Dabo. We showed a lot of patience and were rewarded. If we wanted to only beat the coots, we had Bowden.
My takeaway is that we want our players to put in the work, fight for 4 quarters, not give up, and win more often than not. Having fun is a bog bonus. One team and one game is not as important as the big picture.

About half of Clemson's fans were ready to fire Dabo after going 11-0, being division champs then when we only beat USuCk by 21.
The problem you're friend has is that those crybabies don't run Clemson and Dabo will retire here even if we have to fire somebody to give him a promotion.

Rule 1. Support Clemson. Stick with Clemson for life.
The Gamecocks beat us 5 years straight while we were winning 47 games. Sticking with Dabo was smarter than what most FSU fans would have done. I will leave this world with Clemson still well ahead of SC on the scoreboard. I expect to leave ahead of FSU too, even though we are not now up on the Noles. Rule 2. See Rule 1.

Just speaking for myself here but I look at the state of the entire program. Winning is always important but all the other things that Dabo does and has done make up for having a few bad years. Fans don’t realize how hard it is to win 10 plus games year in and year out. Dabo’s goal is to make Clemson the model program in college football. I think he has already accomplished that. He wins and he does it the right way. He grows boys into men that will make a difference after football. I hope he retires in Clemson and then maybe hands it off to Hunter Renfrow in about 20 years

That's basically how he kept his job for so long. Mediocre/Decent season, beat Coots, mediocre/decent bowl game.
We have become a bit spoiled as evidenced after this past weekend.
In this case though, with them being OOC, I'd take that as our one loss and win the conference and playoffs and a National Championship any day. They'd be even saltier if they beat us and still can't win their conference and sniff the playoffs and we take an 11-1 team all the way.
Pre-season last year, I openly said that I'd be okay with a 9-3 season given that we weren't sure what kind of dropoff we'd have after Watson. We did way better than that and I was happy.
I graduated in 2004 and have seen some ups and downs, not near as much as some of the old timers on here, but I understand it ebbs and flows and I am darn happy to be watching this great period of Clemson Football.

Well, speaking personally, I certainly enjoyed our annual family Thanksgiving gathering a lot more this year as a lot of the coot relatives decided not to show up. Those that did show up preferred to talk about anything but football. So, let's just keep beating them into submission until their attitudes get better.

It is more important than any other game, any other title, or any other trophy. If we won the national title in a year where we lost to South Carolina (unlikely, but possible) IPTAY donations would be down significantly.
That is why the fans demand not just victory, but demoralizing, embarrassing beat-downs. None of the other teams and fan bases we play are truly bad people, so with them it is just a game. The battle against the coots is an existential struggle of good vs evil.

our playoff chances, so i would say it's pretty important not to lose to SC. I think in 2015 we probably could've survived a loss and still gotten in (maybe?), but we certainly would've been out in 2016 and 2017, and losing last Saturday probably would've knocked us out this year as well.
When a playoff berth is on the line it's obviously pretty dang important.

hope/ confidence that the coach can not eventually accomplish the goal. For some schools the goal is winning the conference title. For Clemson now, National title is a goal. During Bowden, we would have been satisfied to win conference and beat coots, at least until he actually won the conference.
Our goals have shifted, but we have confidence Dabo can accomplish them.
