Health care costs high

Partial reason why

https://www.yahoo.com/news/texas-hospitals-hit-122-million-110745840.html

Bills that do not get paid are passed along in increased costs to those who have insurance . Otherwise the doors would close.

Cool, then bill them since they are economically doing well and make it illegal to pass along 'SUNK" costs to others. All is good then.

My excess costs are passed onto others as well.

It's called insurance, and that's the whole purpose of it.

Ah, thing is these folks have no insurance hence the problem. Hence their costs must be factored in for others, causing higher bills and insurance premiums.

I actually ran the numbers of my health care costs to what I paid in premiums over the last 25 years, it was a wash.

Granted, I'm not even 50yo yet. ####, auto insurance, I'm in the red too. A totaled Yukon Xl and a totaled Camry.......

By the way, you know how insurance remains affordable? Because you know it isn't right? Same way pension funds still manage to pay people. The markets.

My company that I retired from is self insured for health care for employees and retirees. They charge a premium monthly, very reasonable, and the most out of pocket was $100. That changed and now a $750 must be met.i retired a decade ago and was still on their coverage until I hit Medicare, now they pay for supplement policies.

It is mostly about the ACA but goes into the issue of high healthcare costs. I recommend it.

There is a lot of corruption involved, shocker I know.

Yup, there is rampant corruption but does not negate the fact our nation of wallow beasts would be unfundable to have “free” healthcare. People complain about the care here but it does a remarkable job of keeping people alive who are scoring to kill themselves.

The general consensus was that, while universal healthcare isn’t perfect, it’s still far better than the American system.

Not when you factor in taxes it is not. Not just income taxes but those pesky VAT taxes that range from 13%-28%. Not to mention the eternal wait lists for care/tests. In the EU 63% of each euro earned is taken in the form of taxes/fees.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Their taxes are higher sure but...

You're ignoring the fact that in the U.S., we pay taxes and get gouged by private insurance companies. It's not just the monthly premiums, which are already outrageous but also the sky-high deductibles and out-of-pocket expenses even after insurance kicks in. I just saw a video of a couple who paid $30,000 after insurance for a routine birth. That's insane.

So yes, other countries pay higher taxes. But in return, they get actual healthcare without surprise bills, medical bankruptcies, or choosing between insulin and rent. In the U.S., we pay more per capita on healthcare than any country on Earth and still have worse outcomes.

A friend of mine had a baby in Colombia. Total out-of-pocket after insurance? $0.

You can throw around VAT numbers and cherry-picked stats, but there’s no defending a system where people go bankrupt over a broken arm or die because they can't afford prescriptions. The American healthcare system is broken period.

Let’s see what happens after the EU nations boost defense spending like they said they were going to do. They are broke too.

My taxes were a total effective rate of 8.4% for combined federal/state. I have great insurance, wife under company plan from job I retired from and they pay all my Medicare supplemental policy costs.

The folks you are crying over made poor life choices, sounds harsh but true.

I’ll take my position over the socialized system any day and twice on Sunday. We can agree to disagree.

So if you make $100k euros $63k is taken in taxes and fees. Even adding in insurance /prescription drugs my costs are way lower and I keep the equivalent of $$90k.

Last I checked $90k was more than $63k.

So say I require an expensive operation, I have no deductible to meet and max out of pocket is $6k. Wife has a $750 deductible with zero out of pocket, so still way cheaper.

My mistake- should read Last I checked $90k was more than $37k.

To be fairer I’ll take out another $2.5k in state sales tax and federal /state gas tax.

So let’s call it $87k to $37k.

Tired old Boomer got it great argument. Reality is if I did not choose to work overseas for a great company I as a boomer would not have a pension.

That company provided me that defined benefit pension item, also a great 401k with a 15% matching which I made sure to contribute 15% to get that match rate. Plus health insurance after retirement for me and wife. Now at 65+ they pay my Medicare supplements, wife’s insurance cost is $240 a month with them.

My situation is more about choices I made

I have talked to many Canadians about their healthcare. Not one ever told me they wished that had the US medical system instead.

If a Canadian is going to the US for hip replacement they are probably very rich.

The first report, released Friday, shows more than 31,000 hospital visits by illegal immigrants in November alone — costing Texas hospitals $121.8 million.

That's $3,903 per visit. Do we actually believe that hospitals are AVERAGING $4,000 of services rendered to every uninsured non-citizen walking through the door? It's very likely NOT going to be skewed by a few very expensive visits--illegals aren't getting $175,000 open heart surgeries.

So who's lying here?

So you propose doctors and nurses work out of altruist goals? Look, hospitals have exorbitant insurance costs, doctors/nurses, radiologists etc to pay. it is not magic, people want high incomes and benefits and those cost money.

To make a socialist system work, all medical education would need to be free, lawsuit damage limits in place and then everyone at said hospital is a government employee. You wanna see doctors leave the field? You wanna wait months for a test, mri, cat scan? In England 54% of people sent to oncologists died before 1st treatment. Sound good to you? Not me, our system is flawed but at least I can and will be treated expeditiously.

the illegals just add to the cost as they pay nothing. so yes it is a problem.

I had several Brits and Canadians that worked for me so yes that topic came up. I had to show on paper to one Canadian how he was being screwed mathematically. He sure was red faced at the end, the other Canadians who already knew it just giggled off to the side. I also pointed out how the one Canadian was gaming the system by not paying in to the system via the mandatory premiums while expecting to move home when he retired from overseas to enjoy the health care at a age he would be a greater consumer of health care.
