I don't think its likely. I think he likes Marquette and he's doing good (well) there. Why would he want to come here (Clemson) as some people think he might ?

he probably does not see the ground for months at a time. How hard would it be to get him to work in a much warmer environment with year round grass?

at Marquette.
If we are being honest, we should be able to get any coach we want due to that simple fact alone.

Why speculate when there isn’t an opening for that position. If and that’s a big if there is an opening I am sure names will be thrown about this board including Shaka

He was making $3m+ at Texas. I doubt Marquette is paying him that much, but it’s a private school and they haven’t announced his salary as far as I can find.

During the 2020/21 season, Smart and Texas won the Big 12 conference championship, and received a No. 3 seed in the NCAA tournament. After they lost to Abilene Christian in the first round, rumors about his job security started circulating. Shortly thereafter, he resigned to accept the HC position at Marquette. At the time, Smart had two years left on his contract with Texas which included a $7 million buy out.

This reminds me of the last two coot football coaching searches when their fans would throw out names of the highest profile coaches in the country and actually believe they had a shot at attracting a top tier coach.
The only thing missing is for someone to fire back that we can attract any coach we want if we offer enough money.

It's fun to speculate

But would Shaka Smart wanna jump for a challenge like Clemson?
Let's take a look at a couple things:
1. Marquette is currently ranked 10th and 1st in the Big East with a young team that is good (3 total upperclassmen) and could potentially make some serious noise in the Big Dance this year and the next couple years.
2. They actually have a pretty good basketball history
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marquette_Golden_Eagles_men's_basketball
Personally, I don't think Shaka would leave Marquette for Clemson. It's a basketball school with a solid history.
IMO if we hire someone it's probably going to have to be an up and comer that wants to put his stamp on a program.

National title game appearance in season 1. Current NET 48 in season 2 to date and a NCAA bubble team. 2-0 vs Brownell all-time. Not bad for a 'Never' guy.

He's taking some heat at UNC. Its starting to look like last year's success was driven by Brady Manek. His team this year is off the rails and selfish.

Smart was an assistant at Clemson on OP's staff...
Feb 22, 2023, 3:04 PM
|
|
and there has always been speculation whether Smart would ever consider a return to Clemson as a head coach due to the circumstances under which OP left Clemson for DePaul. A lot of things are different now compared to then (e.g., facilities upgrades, a different President, a different AD, committed resources, etc.). Smart is currently making $3 million annually at Marquette. The question then becomes, assuming he is interested in a return to Clemson, would Clemson be willing to pay what would be required to get him which is likely something in the $3.5 to $3.75 million range. Brownell is currently making $2.75 million annually with a $3 million buyout.

Just my opinion, but I believe Neff has signaled that expectations for Clemson basketball going forward are a little higher than they have been. He knows, of course, those expectations mean $$$$$.

I don't think he would leave Marquette for Clemson. Marquette is absolutely a basketball school and the team is doing really well right now. They're currently ranked in the top 10 and 1st in the Big East.

but I get the feeling we are prepared to try to compete at a higher level than we have in the past. Shaka may be happy where he is, and may not be willing to return, but I think we would be willing to make an offer he would have to consider.

And there it is...the old if we offer enough they will come to Clemson. Just like coot football, high profile coaches won't risk their reputation on a project school and they are already rich so money is not the issue. Perhaps we could find a seasoned coach who has one more stop in him might consider Clemson.

proven coach (forget Shaka for a minute) that would be considered an upgrade if we don't make a desirable offer. For that matter, we won't get any decent coach that can improve our program if we aren't willing to pay, so again, I don't understand your point. Even a good, young, mid-major coach knows the market, and knows what we want, so such a coach won't come cheap either.

It has already been established that we can’t expect to consistently have a packed Littlejohn Coliseum since we are a football school in a non-urban area, and people can’t be expected to go to a mid-week game in Clemson on a work/school night, especially if the weather isn’t ideal and/or we are playing an opponent that doesn’t get them excited.
