or do you love the daughter more than the son?
You can't make this call until the time is here.
I wished the in-laws had bought the dirty dollar ranch, but they were uninterested and fine with staying 45 mins away at the lake. Mom is 15 mins and dad is 30 mins.

As long as I’m working that represents a 6+% decrease in my income at a minimum. That ain’t nothing.
Staying in state, I like Chattanooga a lot, and Knoxville is growing on me. Nashville is still great but the growth pattern over the decade I’ve been here, if it continues, will make it just too much for me.

Yeah I like Chattanooga better than Knoxville, but Knoxville is really coming around. I spent a couple weeks in Knoxville a few months ago. I am not sure, but I think Chatanooga might be more expensive.

relocated to SC (from Ohio) to be closer to their family after her husband died. She also left behind a son and his wife in Ohio, but I cannot blame her.
I would 100% do that. Our plan is to relocate closer to one kid when they move away, preferably whichever one lives in a cool spot.

Samesies. We’re debating “bait house” vs. be closer.

In retrospect, we wish we’d raised our kids closer to family. It helps in so many ways and with the WFH revolution, anyone can live anywhere, so it will be more feasible should we want to go that route.
OTOH, we would love to have a retirement house in a place we enjoy and that would entice the kids to visit often.

Son, his wife and three grandchildren moved to Clemson. Wife’s family is from Picken’s County _ with family in Spartanburg, Greenville, Easley and Walhalla. My brother is still in Charleston. Beer is cheap and entertainment plenty in our old college town.
Location is a big factor.

answer. If they had a happy childhood, they will likely stay around, or nearby anyway. If they hate your guts, they will move off to Idaho or some foreign country. In that case, you'd be wise not to follow them. Let them make their choices and you react to that. That's my plan, and I'm almost positive not the wife's plan.
It may very well be they hate your guts, move off, find out real life sux, and come back. You never know. But in general I don't plan to follow them unless specifically invited to do so, if they move away.

Your results may vary.

My inlaw's friend has kids that have moved all over the country. She retired to the beach a few years ago. Grandkids have come along recently. Unfortunately, she was just diagnosed with dementia. She's now in a situation where the kids are all over (not close enough to assist in any way) and plan to keep moving. She is having to navigate whether to follow them or move back to her hometown where she still has some friends for help. It is a very sad situation and has driven home to the wife and I the downsides of a rootless lifestyle. In fairness, they didn't have the best family dynamics to begin with.
We are really blessed to have family close by, though several siblings and their families live out of state. We have foregone a few opportunities in bigger cities because we like where we are. I hope that my kids stay relatively close by when they are grown. I do not think I would follow them.

I mentioned earlier that our in-laws moved twice now to be near us and our kids (my wife's brother is a permanent bachelor with only the potential for accidental grandkids). When they decided to be near us the first time, they chose between moving near us and moving to Telluride, CO. They both have health issues starting to form and some memory issues too, and it would be an absolute nightmare if they were without a support system in a hard to reach place that was 6+ hours and $700 away by connecting flights every time we needed to help them or vice versa.

state. They had roots there, and good friends, but no family younger than them. They are in their 80s and were in good health for their ages, but my MIL would have to go out there at least once a year for medical issues. They moved close to my in laws just in time. Since the move, one of them has developed serious problems due to old age. I really don't know what would have happened if they were still on the West Coast.
Good on you for taking care of your in laws.

I love the concept of a nice RV, but I absolutely, positively hate the FBC experience of the average campground.
I'd consider one if I lived out west and had a ton of BLM land that I could easily reach.
