you had about life when you were younger (say, in college or 20-25)?

I was discussing this with some friends and the answers were interesting and, frankly, depressing.

For me, it was To get ahead and make a great living which continues to grow you needed to work for a big company and climb the ladder.
Today, I think it’s the opposite.

modern corporate america, and long-term corporate america are just farms of corporate chodes.

merit is not rewarded. fluency in corporatespeak coupled with solid ball gargling and a nice shiny MBA degree gets you up "the ladder"

"the ladder" is also a complete fabrication to hyper inflate value of individuals while using it as a carrot.

corporate structures nowadays have sr. managers doing #### analysts should be doing. all these firms are way too top heavy with way too many intricacies wrt titles and pay bands that don't reflect actual capabilities of workers. it's a #### show.

IMO there needs to be a massive correction. but as I've said before, the "solution" coming out of chaos is always worse.

we need to get smaller. smaller communities, smaller companies, smaller breadth of scale wrt to commodity distribution needed to facilitate day to day life (groceries, food, energy, etc.)

instead it's gone the opposite way, completely flipped the paradigm of having a motivated workforce, and stripped any leverage from the consumer in the process.

i fuggging hate it.

oh. and some chode from IT will lock you out of your phone b/c "iT's ThE pRoCeSs"

Just from my experience with multiple corporations, about 20 percent of the people are really running the company. When I say running, I mean making it operate. The titling of these folks varies from very senior titles to not so senior titles.

When I saw that number, it blew me away. But I work in a relatively small team in the Carolinas with less than 40 people so it doesn't FEEL like 67,000 people. Plus, I am all by myself with WFH so that helps. If I move jobs, I might have to go back to an office.

Even though last year was one of our biggest and most profitable years ever, we'll slough off a few thousand employees every month just based on...well, I have no idea what its based on. How old you are, how much money you make, or who you ticked off on a teams call. No really idea how it's decided.

I've worked for enough to never go on the other side of the table. And to realize that I can do what I do now on my own or for a smaller firm and make more money while having more fun doing it.

Turns out, you need to live in the world to know better how it works, and also how to lead it.

My other advice would be always make the lady come first because then it doesn't matter how terrible or quick you are at the rest of the show, she'll always remember she got her rocks off with you and that's always gonna happen any time she wants to come back for more.

There was a very specific moment when I realized I was now an adult and all the people I'd relied on for guidance and to make important decisions weren't any better at it than me. It made me feel like civilization is just a house of cards and our faith in all these systems is the only thing keeping it from collapsing.

So yeah, bleak. It's given me more faith in myself, so I got that going for me, which is nice.
