We can learn a lot from the New England Patriots.

Colin Cowherd had some criticism of the Patriots today on his show, and when I heard his comments my jaw dropped.
He said that the Patriots went from dynasty to what they are today due to arrogance; arrogance in their own knowledge, and arrogance regarding their culture. Because of this, they failed to adapt to a quickly changing environment in the NFL.
He went on to talk about their poor coaching hires and bad roster management.
It made me think of our football program, the incredible success we’ve had recently, and the trap of becoming overconfident.
Have our coaches become overconfident? Do they think they have it all figured out? Are they missing signs that they aren’t adapting?
Have we become over-reliant on our culture, believing that it’s more important than everything else? Has this caused bad decisions to be made with regard to coaching hires and players we recruit?
I certainly hope we can learn from the Patriots and avoid repeating their mistakes.

You think going from best QB of all time to a rookie and now second year Mac Jones had to do anything with that? Referencing Collin Cowherd for one means nothing - he gets paid to make talking points for suckers like yourself to run with. Don’t compare the Pats to Clemson football.

Julian Edelman - “I don’t know what Bill was thinking. He keeps his cards close. No one really knows what these thinking, “Edelman said. “My speculation is they didn’t want to go in and hire someone, probably from the outside, who gets the job the first year, has a little success, then leaves and becomes a head coach either in college or another team.”
NE hasn't exactly put much talent around Jones. NE continues to miss on their WR evaluations. Look at Philly and Miami - they went out and got talented WRs. What a difference now that they have some weapons.
Seems to be a lot of parallels to us.

He's right about the Patriots. Don't you think his commentary might apply to us as well?
We've gone from multiple playoff appearances in a row, and a national championship several years ago, to not making the playoffs two years in a row.
The star power on our roster is significantly lower.
The coaches Dabo has hired the last few years are, on the whole, significantly underqualified for their roles.
We need to be careful.

You act like we didn't have one of the worst qbs in the NCAA. A decent qb would have had us in playoffs both years.

I love me some hot Colin Cowherd takes, but him preaching about arrogance is rich!!!
As a person who is not a Pats fan but lives in New England I’d take their culture 10 out of 10 times… they expect to win, they know how to win, and they will do what it takes to get back to that standard very quickly.

How's that culture working out the last few years?
Dec 20, 2022, 2:36 PM
[ in reply to Re: We can learn a lot from the New England Patriots. ] |

They went from Super Bowl champs in 2018, to losing in the wild card round in 2019 (something they hadn't done in a decade), to having a losing record in 2020 (something they had not done in 20 years). They squeaked into the playoffs last year, losing in the wild card round, and currently sit at .500 and are a long shot to make the playoffs.
A culture of winning is great, until that culture is expected to conquer all.
A good culture can't overcome poor coaching and subpar talent. Not for the Patriots, and not for Clemson.

Respectfully Judge I think you’re wrong… A culture of winning is exactly why our coaches will fix their mistakes and our players will elevate their game
Best example I have right now is Nate Wiggins… dude got burned at Wake Forest but the next day came back and point blank said ain’t no way that’s happening again… from there he put the work in and sure enough come the ACCCG he was arguably our Player of the Game… that cultural belief is at the core of our program

We were a field goal from making the playoffs for a 7th time which would have tied Alabama for the most in CFB playoff history.
11-2 with a conference title would be a dream season for the vast majority of college programs, yet here you are pretending there is some underlying problem which is laughable.
The game is changing. The transfer portal and expanded playoffs will increase parity and make it even harder for programs like Alabama and Clemson to dominate and make runs like they have the last 7-8 years, which is a good thing IMO.

For the second year in a row, our playoff-caliber coach, our playoff-caliber talent, and our playoff-caliber investments in the program did not result in a playoff berth.
This is despite a great culture within our program.
What is being done to fix it?
Last year, the only changes made were downgrading both coordinator positions to simply promote unqualified coaches already on the staff. We didn't use the portal to get any impact players.
So far this year, we haven't gotten anyone from the portal, and staff changes seem unlikely.
So why should we have any optimism that we will be back in the playoffs next year?

If what he was saying was remotely true it might, possibly, be a cautionary tale worth considering. Since it is pure babble that doesn’t actually address in any meaningful way the situation the Patriots are in, it can’t really be paralleled to anything. It’s a boatload of fallacies. It is not surprising you’d be attracted to it.

While I think there are similarities, the big difference is that our personnel turns over every four years.
I DO think there is a similar mindset from the head coach that "my system is what wins the games" and time has possibly led to them both forgetting that great players are needed to win games (both through recruiting, player development, and smart choices).
Clearly, Brady leaving put a major dent in the Pats and his immediate Super Bowl win in Tampa Bay was a thumb in Bill Belechick's eye. BUT I can understand that the Patriots were struggling with when to move on from Brady who is freakin' old for an NFL QB. They lost Jimmy Garoppolo because of Brady and didn't want the same thing to happen again. Bringing back Matt Patricia was stupid. And it isn't easy to turn over an NFL roster.
I think Clemson's problems are more easily fixable in the short term. And maybe we are patient for another season with the coordinators. But I would like to see evidence of the old Dabo willing to make tough decisions, because he seems to have taken the last couple of years off.
Yes, 11-2, an Orange Bowl, and the ACC Championship is a great season. But when we can all see that if Cade had been the QB against USC, we would have likely been 12-1 and in the playoff, it is hard to NOT point the finger at the coach for not being able to make a tough decision.

Judge Judy, the first mistake you made was listening to cowturd. The only thing that happened to the Patriots was the loss of Tom Brady. Has nothing to do with arrogance or any other stupid nonsense. You know little about football so please stick to defending your average basketball program that’s never done anything or had anyone good.
