Worst beer you ever tried

I have tried some truly awful beers in my life, but on a recent trip back to the Carolinas, I stopped in Atlanta for the night to check out where they filmed The Walking Dead, Stranger Things and others with my kids. Anyways, I didn’t want to waste money for a 6pack because I am a three beer guy now in my older age. But this gem, Basement IPA should have been a warning enough with the name. Drank two sips and poured both down the sink. I hope I didn’t rot out the pipes.

What is some of your worst beers you have tried?

I remember I had that in my beer can collection. In college you drink some truly awful beers, due to your budget. Milwaukees Best and Shaeffer from a keg brings back some memories from college. Also, I was 19 and got really drunk downtown. My fraternity brothers owned a big bar, thus able to drink underage. Anyways, I stopped by these two frat brothers apartment. Their father was a well known National Psychiatrist and was on TV, but as I went to get beer from their fridge it was Schlitz Malt Liquor Beer.

That scarred me and puzzled me that someone had such a large amount of money available and would drink that stuff

Stroh's, Milwaukee's Best (The Beast), Schaefer, and National Bohemian (Naty Bo). It's all just hops flavored water and smelled like that small bathroom in Tiger Town Tavern after a long night of everyone pissing in the sink, but when it's all you can afford, you master a tolerance for it.

beer I drank in the 1970s, for sure. Seems like every one was skunked, so I just assumed that was the way it was supposed to be. They did a reboot, supposedly using the original 1960s recipe about 10 years ago or so, and it was pretty dang good.

I don’t love IPAs
But a lil tip if you don’t like the strong bitter hops of most IPAs, pay attention to the IBUs.
I found that beers with IBUs of about 30 or less work for me, and there are some IPAs that use different less pungent and bitter hops that are pretty good.

for it to be good. Too low and it tastes like a lead pipe, too high and its over done and way too rich and sweet. But in that 6 to 9% range and its just right... most of the time anyway. Not a fan of all the hazy ipa's though... Legal remedy has a good one, stone "enjoy by" is a go-to and dogfish 90 is a good one as well. Dogfish 90 is a little high on the abv but balances out well. IPA's are good if you're a 1 beer, 2 beer kinda guy. If you're an all day at a tailgate guy, in the sun, obviously its not that kinda thing. Its a sipper.

Braumeister: Instead of calling it "Milwaukee's Finest", which would have brought on a lawsuit, since that slogan was already taken, they called it "Milwaukee's Choicest". It was about half the price of other available beers at the time, and was not nearly worth the price.

GIANT FOOD BEER: That, literally, is all the white cans had on them, those three words. It was sold, coincidentally enough, by GIANT FOOD WORLD. Awful doesn't begin to describe it, but hey, what did you expect, anyway?

of mind, I guess, I can drink one of a certain IPA and appreciate it, but for the most part, me no likey. One of my least favorite styles. I prefer straight pilsners/pale lagers, heffes, stouts and porters. My absolute favorite is probably trappist beers like Chimay. I like hops for balance and effect, but not in your face as the main event.

This would have been in 1984. Four guys staying in a cheap classic old-style hotel room right on the beach. Two of my companions built a really big pyramid of beer cans from the top of the dresser to the ceiling. When housekeeping came-in to clean and make the beds, one of the maids was putting a blanket back in the dresser and all of those cans fell right on top of her. Boy was she pi$$ed-off.
She went straight to the manager and we spent the next hour trying to convince him not to kick us out of the hotel.

Absolute worst beer I've ever tasted, and I have covered a LOT of territory in that department.

Modelo Chelada Especial

A friend bought one, opened it, took a sip. Proclaimed it was gross. Offered to let me try it. I fell for it. He was absolutely right! He promptly threw it in the garbage.

I don't know why but I've never had a good Heineken. I know their are lots of people who like it but I can't get used to it. Also don't like Abita Turbo Dog.

I suspect hops are similar to cilantro in that certain people taste them entirely different than others. I don't know which IPA is my least favorite beer but it's certainly one of them.

The worst big commercial beer is Miller Lite. Honestly pretty much everything Bud/Miller/Busch/Natty/etc is all trash, but I can drink all of them except Miller Lite which I just flat out refuse to touch.

At 60, I’ve had my share bad tasting beer. Nothing I’ve ever tried comes close to the Fat Tire draft I got at On the Border a few years back. Only beer that I can remember not finishing at a restaurant.

I like almost all beers that I have tried. I always find that Heineken tastes skunky to me. I once sold a lot of Bud Light at a fundraiser, when Bud Light was fairly new. The Bud rep asked me what I thought of it, and I told him it taste like what I imagined #### would taste like. He said that he was going to give me a Bud Light racing jacket until I said that.

Two of my buddies and teammates from high school also went to Clemson on Football scholarship. We would buy a 6 pack of Old Milwaukee beer for $1.50, sneak over and hide out in the trees that were just removed near Littlejohn, recline on the pine needles and drink that nasty swill as fast as we could and hustle back to the jock dorm at Benet Hall. Ahhhhh, the good old days!

I have to say it is a 3 way tie with Pabst Blue Ribbon, Pearl and, Miller Lite. Those rank right up there with swamp water but, I think I would like swamp water if I have a choice.

Manila beer in Okinawa. At one point it was $3 a case in 1989. Of course a half gallon on Jack Daniels was $5. The theme then was you left Oki as an alcoholic or a PT freak. I managed both.
