Water in crawl space

9

Oct 4, 2024, 11:49 AM

We have a lot of water from the hurricane that flooded into our crawl space underneath our house. I've never experienced this before, and am not sure how to get rid of all of if. Is there anywhere that rents sump pumps, or is there a more effective way to get rid of this?

We are in Easley. Apologies for posting on the wrong board. I'm not sure what the correct one should be and knew it would be seen on the main board.

Thanks

Sump pumps are not expensive. Tractor Supply will have them. Lowe’s. Hook up garden hose and just pump it out.

If it's something that happens regularly with storms...

... You may want to work with a company to have them install a permanent sump. You can also go all out and have them convert the crawl space into a dry space, but that's obviously a bigger inve$$$tment.

I've dealt with this also. After using the sump pump, and the water is gone, put a oscillating fan in your crawl space door/opening. Open up your vents to help it dry out quicker, worked well for me.

Do you have a lawn irrigation pump?

A little pvc and/or a garden hose might do the trick.

No but after this experience, we may need to look into getting one.***

Open it up and you might even want to add a fan that won't get wet

Need to keep the humidity down to keep mold from going crazy. A dehumidifier is great, but a fan moving air is good enough. Keep the cords dry and on a GFCI.

In addition to pumping out, I would suggest

2

Oct 4, 2024, 12:04 PM

that once that is complete that you consider dehumidifier, crawlspace fan that runs on humidity level, and then a vapor barrier if you don’t have one. Not sure how dry your space normally is but if you have standing water now, you want to at least get it back to normal by getting the extra moisture out beyond the standing water to prevent mold issues. Just a recommendation on accumulated knowledge - don’t consider myself an expert.

This...

I am an expert.

Don't let anyone sell you on an encapsulation...9-10 they aren't necessary..If moisture intrusion isnt a reoccurring issue, don't sweat it. I certainly recommend recommend completely sealing your crawlspace and installing a Santa Fe dehumidifier...also a
15 mil plastic vapor burrier on the top of the soil would do wonders.

Agree 100% with this. Also a small sump pump is not very expensive and hook a hose to it and it will pump it out very quickly.

As others have said, , open all vents, place fan in crawl space, leave door open but put screen over opening to keep critters out. That vapor barrier is worth its weight in gold. Also, you need to address how so much water is getting into your crawl space and fix that.

If the water under your house is not a usual occurrence, then you just have a one-off and are lucky. You really only need to dry out the crawl space by pulling the moist air out. Negative pressure will pull new, low humidity air into your crawl space from outside. You can get a 10" diameter flexible duct (25 linear feet) for about $75 at Home Depot. Run it to the center of your crawl space and hook the other end to a fan (you may have to use cardboard to create a funnel to the fan) set in the access door or wall vent and turn it on. If the relative humidity outside is low, then it won't take long at all to dry things out. If there is standing water, then pump or siphon it out or just wait and let it soak into the ground, which shouldn't take much time as long as your crawl space isn't sealed up tight. If your crawl space is full of plastic liner, then you will want to pull the liner away from the walls and some of the ground so things can dry out completely. I am a contractor, seen this many times.
Good luck!

You may want someone to check for mold after everything dries. It can be a serious thing. When we had the 1000 year flood a few years ago, walls of many houses had to be ripped out because of mold.

I live on the downside of a hill. It’s only happened 2 or 3 times in 20 years but after the first time, I purchased three 5 gallon buckets from Lowe’s or Home Depot (with the tops). Place the buckets in three different locations in the low area of your crawl space. Dig a hole just an inch wider than the bucket and deep enough to just have about two inches of the bucket above ground level. Drill small holes all around the bucket, but leave the bottom four or five inches without holes. Place the bucket in the hole (open end up) fill the gap around the bucket with pea gravel. Cover the gravel with dirt to ground level. Purchase a small pump (you can always buy another pump or two if needed) and place in bucket. Hook up a garden hose and run it out into your yard. Plug pump into a drop cord connected to your power source. I cut small holes in the plywood door under my house for each hose. I like to run the pumps all night and that allows me to close up the space to keep the critters out. After it happens again, you’ll thank me.

Use the fan like another suggested and then you might want to cover the ground under the house with thick black plastic as a moisture barrier.

Water in a crawl space is no small matter. You should be making it a priority to mitigate. The results of ignoring or delaying are generally not good. The comment about creating negative pressure to draw in dryer, less humid air and expel it to the outside is solid. Low point pumping is an absolute... with a quality sump pump that you can rely on. You might also consider where the water is entering from ...the surface or is it subterranean? Not being able to see your site and soil makes it hard to say, but if there is a way to divert with a berm or swale ...or French drain ( foundation drain if you do not have one) could eliminate the problem. Wish I could help. I have an Architectural background but in order to live here did contracting for years. It breaks my heart to see some of what has happened there. I have been asked to be part of a group ( from Vermont) to go down there at some point to help. Good luck.

You can buy one at Harbor Freight for less than a hundred bucks.

Oct 4, 2024, 9:33 PM

I suggest you pickup a bucket and a roll of fine metal or fiberglass screen. Drill a few holes in the sides of the bucket, cover the outside of the bucket with screen. A staple gun will fasten the screen or duct tape or if you're as poor as me you can tie it on with string, twine or even yarn.

Hook up the hose and a drop cord to the pump, set a brick on the bucket and set the pump on the brick. Put the bucket in the lowest ground in the crawl space and plug the cord in. If water puddles in other places deal with them one at a time.

Re: Water in crawl space

Oct 5, 2024, 7:46 AM

This is important: AFTER you get the water out, you will need to DRY OUT the crawlspace or you will get mold. THere are high powered fans you can rent to do this As others have said, if you have power you can get inexpensive pumps at Tractor Supply that will do the job just fine. Just plug them in and run them until it's dry.

Just my $0.02 worth but having lived in the lowcountry my entire life, I know a thing or two about moisture.
