Was it targeting?

Apr 21, 2017, 11:27 PM

Watson's throw to Renfrow in the National Championship game--was there targeting on the tackle by the Alabama cornerback? One could argue he launched his helmet into Renfrow. I'm posting this because I noticed it just now watching a replay of the game. Thoughts?

There was targeting all night, but never called.

'Cause it was called all season on Bama.

I read where Saban is a stand up/class act guy. I need more proof.

I heard one of their players say that they planned to play DW 4 tough and take him out . This was in a post game interview.
But DW4 was " too tough ". I'm too lazy to look for look for once

That dude knew he was about to let his entire team and fan base down by letting him catch the ball. He took aim at Renfrow and unloaded on him in a desperate attempt to make him lose the ball. He probably threw caution to the wind at that point...flag or no flag he didn't want to lose the NC.

At the very least it was a late hit when you watch it. The ref was standiing there looking at it the whole time. The guy launched himself--what else do you have to do to satisfy the rules?

exactly. late hit that was unecessary as the td had been scored. should have been called for it

Good question. Refs dont like to throw flags on final plays

Apr 22, 2017, 5:46 AM

for good reason, but on the other hand a game cant end on a def penalty. Only if he had dropped it, and if time had also run out, would it have mattered, as i suspect we kick the field goal anyway. But sure, if those two ifs happen, we wish we had the flag.

But i looked at a bunch of videos (hard to find more than the broadcast angle), and it looked too close to call to me. The hit was on the upper arm portion of the shoulder pad. At full speed it looks like his facemask was up, but at slower speed the helmet was down some, but not the 'spearing' look you see sometimes. To me, if I'm the ref I dont throw the flag.

Maybe a tad late, but again, too close. And in that case, by the time the hit occurs the TD is good anyway, so maybe a good decision to let it go. (In this case I'm assuming the ref just decided to not throw the flag).

A weird thought just occurred to me: lets say Renfrow drops the ball on the hit, and the ref calls late hit. Obviously the ref calls it a TD, which is necessary for the hit to be late. But of course the td would be reviewed. Lets say they overturn it. A review cannot overturn a judgement flag (except targeting). So do we have a case where a conflict of fact stands? No td, but a late hit flag that cant be unless there is a td?

ref "WAITED" to see if Renfrow held on to the ball after contact. He should have signaled TD as soon as Renfrow's feet hit the ground. I mean, he took a step or two before contact. If Renfrow fumbled the ball, was he going to rule incomplete?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Don't know. Good question. Of course, the whole thing took

half a second, so hard to know what the ref was thinking.

My answer is no!..

Apr 22, 2017, 8:31 AM

The hit was an attempt to dislodge the ball and refs tend to allow those, but due to the timing, I assume that Clemson would have been awarded the TD anyway. A better question is, "would the refs have called the inside corner for defensive holding or pass interference for tackling Scott (Alabama fans' supposed pick which wasn't) on the play if incomplete?

I don't know about that, but I can tell you that any other game Reuben Foster would've been ejected for literally trying to clothesline DW. Mike Williams was also targeted early in the game

Re: Was it targeting?

Apr 22, 2017, 9:44 AM

There were a few times Foster should have been ejected

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Better question is where was the pass interference flag

Apr 22, 2017, 9:43 AM

Since Bama was tackling the other receivers as they came off the line?
