SAE Statement over "Cripmas" Party
Dec 8, 2014, 9:28 AM
|
|
CLEMSON, SC – Sigma Alpha Epsilon, in a joint decision between chapter members at Clemson University, their alumni advisory board and the national headquarters, has suspended all activity indefinitely following an inappropriate theme party organized by several of its members at a private, off-campus residence. Most of the chapter’s top officers have resigned from their positions and additionally have been suspended from the organization. Any member who attended the event may face suspension as well, pending the results of internal investigation. The decision of a few brothers to hold this type of social event is inexcusable and completely inappropriate. Furthermore, their behavior in no way reflects the values and creed of the fraternity, and we apologize to campus and local community for their actions because we teach our brothers to be leaders, scholars and, most importantly, gentlemen. The chapter’s leadership failed to uphold the stringent policies Sigma Alpha Epsilon maintains for social events as part of our health-and-safety program, and there are consequences for their poor decision-making. Interim chapter officers will work with their alumni advisory board to formulate a plan to re-establish the relationship between the chapter and the Clemson community.

I can not speak for the current make-up of the so-called "rich boys" in the fraternity but I can let you know that I for one, was an SAE and came from a modest family where my mom and dad both worked hourly jobs, my dad in the mill and my mom as a secretary.I can say that we had some brothers from very wealthy families but to their credit, they took this old country boy and treated me as an equal. In fact, I eventually rose to become the chapter president. I take exception that we were just organized drunks. I do think this party was in poor taste. I probably had some doors opened for me after I graduated because of my affiliation with SAE but it did not promise me success. Success came through hard work that my parents instilled in me growing up.Please know what you are talking about before you open your mouth. Better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt!

Don't show your stupidity! You were insinuating that only rich kids join SAE. Well, maybe and maybe not. I just thought your brush was a little to wide to make such a statemnet. Do you ever think rich kids ever decide not to join a fraternity for what ever reason? My son, coming from a now rich family, decided not to join because he did not feel like giving up the time it would take to be part of that or any other organization so where would you place that "rich boy"?

I believe the vast majority of SAE members are rich, entitled, white boys. You seem to disagree. I dont see what your son has to do with this...as he is not an SAE. You clearly love your fraternity and had a good experience. I wouldnt expect someone so happy with the group to criticize it. What is it you are looking for? You want to sell the rest of us on the group?

you then should take your own advise. anyone who attended Clemson knows about frats and what they do and stand for. do you care to tell us why you joined and the purpose of your so called social club? why do people in a fraternity not want to say we are people who want to be around a certain type and group of people because we think we are better off for it? what value to society or the university does your group provide? once again, everyone knows what goes on with fraternities and wants to pretend we don't.

other frats. They are all the same and should be banned from campus, unless it's and academic honor frat.
BTW, I was in a frat (until I "wised-up" and quit) at Clemson in the late 80's. Dumbest thing ever.
Clemson would be better off without them.

I know we live in a politically correct, thought-control police state and everything... so I was looking for something that would offend people who like being offended, but I didn't see anything. Looks like they were just making fun of gang culture.
I figure I had to be missing something.

Don't care if it was 7 years ago or 7 minutes ago....it's coming up when people are doing "Clemson Cripmas" google searches TODAY. And yes unfortunately, these parties still do happen @ Clemson. Bottom line: as many have said, this is not a good or true representation of what Clemson is about. Not trying to deny racist idiots their right to freedom of expression, let them have their ignorant parties - associating the parties w Clemson (calling it "ClemsonCripmas") is what the protests are about.

People doing a search don't know this, so do you plan to post a message to that effect, explaining this whenever someone does a search? They type Clemsoncripmas and get this. And just FYI: I happened to see this picture posted on twitter by one of our highly-valued (black) recruits in his timeline so....

We don't see the issue, because in reality, the only issue
Dec 8, 2014, 2:19 PM

regarding this party is that there are people who bend over backwards to LOOK for things that offend them.
That stupid frat party doesn't have anything to do with racism. Just like having Seminoles, Braves, Fighting Irish mascots along with mafia-themed parties and white people doing dia de los muertes parties has nothing to do with racism.
Racism is treating a person worse or better because of their race. When people are so victimhood-horny that they interpret anything white people do or say about black people as potentially racist, then it destroys dialogue. If black people are the only ones who are allowed to do and say certain things, then how does that promote equality? It doesn't, it drives a wedge between people.
If a white person even brings up watermelons people immediately wonder if they are being racist. I've seen a white person clarify to a group of other white people that when she brought up fried chicken as a potential menu item for a party that she didn't want to offend anyone. Talk about awkward. If a white person ever wants to paint their face, they know that every single color is fine except black. White people don't even know how to safely reference black people any more. "Can I say 'black,' or should I say African American?" White people are always worried they will accidentally fall into the trap of being labeled racist even if they genuinely love all people and would never treat a person worse or think less of a person because of skin color.
Political correctness has reached an insane fever pitch, and resembles a non-fatal version of witch hunting.

On its own, the party would appear to some to not having anything to do with racism. However there is another ethnically, racially diverse group of people in the Clemson U community who feel differently based on other events, acts, threats, etc. they experienced which occurred in the same timeframe as the frat party. As for all of the other comments, your opinions and anecdotes are noted - thanks for sharing your perspective.

as evidence of why a party is offensive. Otherwise you are being misleading.
Also, considering the word "Michigan" is prominently displayed in the picture may send some of that negative attention towards Ann Arbor.
And can you explain how a party making fun of gangs is racist?
Are you implying that gangs are a "black" thing? I certainly don't see it that way. Gangs are a problem in communities of all ethnicity. Are you sure you are not looking for an excuse to be offended?

I have no intention of being misleading, no need to be because it is what it is....this image comes up when you type clemsoncripmas. So maybe the search engines are misleading and you should take your argument to them for allowing this image to come up and be associated with Clemson. Maybe you don't have a problem with that though, I don't know...but I do. So, leave my University's name off of the ignorant parties and it's all good. I definitely don't condone gang culture nor stupid frat-hazing behavior. As for looking for excuses to be offended, naw that's not my story nor my style. After living as many years as I have, there's no need to be naive to the realities of the world such as stereotyping including racial, gender, etc. Being here in the Clemson area and seeing/hearing what's been going on, there is more to the story than what has been shared. Hoping that all involved will continue to come together and work through the issues. If I were easily offended by racism, sexism, etc, I would have left TNet a long time ago but thankfully the mods are good about clearing out trash on the regular.
