Conference Championship game losers

Does the committee actually punish them for losing the game? Why would a team that doesn’t play in their conference championship game move up against the loser of the championship game?
Thoughts?

It’s probably gonna depend on performance in the game. Lay an egg and they may just bump them out.

No! Because the conference loser didn't play the other 1-loss conference team during the season so there isn't a head-head comparison.

I don’t think they should, but they might. You should not be punished for losing your conference title. Winning it is supposed to be a reward that can give you a first-round bye. I think if we beat SC and Miami loses we are for sure in regardless of the ACCCG

That's a horrible logic, eventhough it would benefit the Tigers. No team that goes into a title game in tbe top say 8???, should be replaced by a team outside the top 12 going into the game. You will have teams that are top 5 drop a game on purpose on coattail into the playoffs..

The intensity in Conference Championship games will notch up. Handle that and you could get on a roll. Lose and if you stay in, you are likely on the road in first round. The playoffs start with the Conference Championship games even more this year it seems. If your last look is a loss. It will make a difference.

I just don’t trust the committee, specifically after what they did last year.
Who’s to say they wont change the rankings big time after the conference championship games? Like they did last year.
Just don’t trust it.

They did it with the 4 team playoff. I forgot what year but the 4th ranked team lost the championship game and they moved out of the top 4.

I'm totally cynical. If Bama and Ole Miss win, I think the committee would likely move them ahead of Clemson even if Clemson wins.

Clemson plays a ranked team. The others don’t.
Clemson will stay ahead of those 2 teams with a win.

Agree. There is zero chance Ole Miss, with a win over a dog like Mississippi State, passes Clemson if the Tigers beat a top 15 SC.

and they drop us below Bama after they put us above them this wee But I do recall 2014, when TCU went into the final weekend ranked 3rd, blew out their opponent something like 54-17 and they got dropped all the way to 6th!

The liklihood of ACC getting 3 teams in playoffs is slightly better than FSU winning the ACC next year. (Not zero, but very close.)

The ACC is not getting 3 teams in. Given that, do you think Clemson can get in without even PLAYING in their conference championship game - the answer is NO !

Clemson can most definitely get in without going to the ACCCG. Perhaps a few lucky draws need to go our way with other games, but it’s completely doable.
Plus, you can see the respect Clemson is getting versus other schools by simply jumping us ahead of some SEC schools that get a lot of respect themselves.

will get in.
If we beat the chickens, we should get in. One game that may screw us is if TAM beats Texas and jumps ahead of us. I assume we would be in even if we remain at 12, since Boise St is already in the top, so they wouldn't be putting another G5 team in above us.
Of course, best case scenario is for Vandy to beat Tennessee and that should drop them below us, but maybe not!
The committee will do anything possible to have AT LEAST 3 SEC teams in the playoff! It would be hard to justify jumping Bama ahead of us now, in that they are playing 5 & 6 Auburn.

Two variables on Conference Champion Losers
Nov 27, 2024, 7:37 AM
|
|
1. Was it a tiebreaker that kept a team out of the Championship Game? For instance, if Miami were to lose to SMU in ACC Championship and get their 2nd loss and you compared Miami 2 losses to Clemson's 2 losses (if Clemson beats Scar). You could argue that Clemson gets in over Miami because Clemson had same number of ACC losses as Miami but lost the tiebreaker to get to title game. That's an example where a conference loser could be penalized and left out.
2. If you are a conference loser and pick up your 3rd loss, I think they could be left out of the right two loss at large team out there.
Gonna be fun to watch.

If a conference runner up takes a 3rd loss, I could see a 16 team playoff and no more conference championship games in 2026.
