Can someone please ELI5 why this issue is falling along Left/Right divide? I honestly don’t know. I’ve never been on Twitter so maybe I just don’t get it? I will say I didn’t ever really picture Elon Musk as someone that conservatives would be super stoked about.

Well, see, Elon posted "take the red pill" on Twitter once. Ivanka liked the comment and responded: "Taken." The transexual creator of "The Matrix", Lilly (formerly Larry) Wachowski, tweeted back: "$%#^ both of you."
That was it. Boom. Trumpworld had themselves a new hero, instantly. Nevermind that Musk is a technocrat globalist with a Tesla gigafactory in China who intends to single-handedly dismantle the fossil-fuel industry, he's MAGA!!! (Despite the fact that he's a self-proclaimed "political moderate" who has two kids by Grimes...who is an admitted Bernie Bro.)

"Red-pilling" is a euphemism that has been adopted by the far right for "waking up from dreamland and seeing the world as it really is." They stole this from the Matrix...you know, that scene where Morpheus offers Neo the blue pill - stay in the Matrix, or dreamland, the false world that had been pulled over the eyes of all the humans plugged into it - or take the red pill, and "wake up" and see the real world for what it really is.
QAnon adopted this as their mantra for "waking someone up", and eventually this filtered back to being widely used by much of the far right. So of course they were absolutely delighted when Musk came along talking about "taking the red pull"...because that means, in their heads, he's joined them and is secretly one of them even though aside from that one odd exchange there's been absolutely zero evidence he's changed at all. And it's really hard to see Musk as any kind of arch-conservative, much less a Q.
On the other hand, I just plain don't care if Musk somehow becomes some sort of GOP hero. I mean, it's weird, but if they get behind the idea of converting to Teslas and all-electric cars, we may see that transition to renewables that gives us actual energy independence and keeps us all from cooking, and if the GOP gets behind SpaceX, we'll quickly colonize low orbit and move right on from there to near-Earth mining and then on to the Moon and Mars and beyond.
I'm down with all that.

Karen, do I sound upset? I'm leery, yeah, but that's mostly because of the sheer size of the behemoth entity Musk is building. Like I said, the dude's on track to become the world's first trillionaire, and that's a beast the world just hasn't seen before. (The world is only worth, like, 418 trillion total.) Who can reign it in, if Musk loses his mind? And who inherits that vast empire after Musk is gone?
Musk himself, though, I actually have rarely disagreed with his outlook on most anything. Mostly because I'm a highly Libertarian-leaning progressive futurist guy and technophile myself.
