New Story: Brent Venables after spring game: "I wasn't real pleased"

Brent Venables after spring game: "I wasn't real pleased"

To say that Brent Venable was unhappy following Saturday’s spring game would be an understatement. The Tigers’ defensive coordinator spoke briefly with the media at the conclusion of the Orange’s 17-9 win over the White, and he said Saturday’s performance – and the performance of his group during the spring – was just okay. My biggest concerns

Apr 10, 2016, 9:12 AM

It's only my two cents for what it's worth, and this isn't just defensively.
It's the entire team.

#1- Quarterback...
Outside of Watson, NO ONE has shown the ability to lead this team for very long.

#2- Special teams...
And this is over the entire board outside of field goals. From kick-offs to
coverage to PUNTING

geez..all this youth & inexperience doesn't bode well at Auburn..

Apr 10, 2016, 9:13 AM

And i feel TiGERS are going to be a notch or two less potent on D this year (in backfield) and 1 or 2 losses could happen.

Re: geez..all this youth & inexperience doesn't bode well at Auburn..

Apr 10, 2016, 9:20 AM

But imagine how much better the offense will be this year. I don't see the D being one of the best in the country again either with all the youth in spots but I certainly don't think it's gonna be bad to the point where we're having to win shootouts. Which I don't think we're losing very many shootouts either. The opener in Auburn will be a huge measuring stick

never, and I mean never, doubt BV***

What about the fact that Ben boulware played soft and lackadaisical all day? Something wrong with that? No big play Ben?

This doesn't sound good about Wiggins...

Apr 10, 2016, 9:42 AM

“I don't know what the schedule is and it really doesn't matter because I can't work with him. He'll be there in fall camp unless he has a setback. He'll provide depth at nickel. That's where he started before he got hurt.”

He CAN'T work with him!?! I hope that's a type because Wiggins was supposed to be a major contributor this year.

I just think it meant he's not ready to be on the field playing yet...

I took from that statement that he CAN'T work with Wiggens before fall camp per NCAA rules. Am i reading too little into that statement as opposed to too much?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Um ... yes ... ^^ This ^^***

Apr 10, 2016, 10:51 AM

BV is saying that there is no more opportunity to work with Wiggins before fall practice.

ncaa rule, until he is cleared to play, venables pretty much has to ignore him.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

A couple of years ago, he said basically the same thing ...

Apr 10, 2016, 5:14 PM

... about MacKensie Alexander when Mac was injured.

At the time, people read his comments as meaning he didn't think Alexander was "all that" ...

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

"CAN'T" work with him until fall camp, if he is ready?***

Re: New Story: Brent Venables after spring game: "I wasn't real pleased"

Apr 10, 2016, 10:26 AM

I honestly believe Venables said a lot of this to keep the team focused he can't come out and say we looked great today with all the youth and position battles on D. Our D will be fine remember we didn't have our 1s all together and oh yea by the way what offense is going to be better then ours that this D will see. I'm glad DW4 and company is on our side!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Remember : It's the spring game ....

Apr 10, 2016, 10:27 AM

Have to think the team isn't playing 100% ... Thankful they made it through the day injury free ...

BV is challenging them...they'll be ready for Auburn ...

Are some buying into the SEC hype machine with all the Awbarn fear I see? What was their record last year? Looks mighty fearful to me....

Typical coaching talk

Apr 10, 2016, 10:50 AM

We are going to bust Auburn right in the mouth!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I was there watching the game and i wasnt real pleased either

Apr 10, 2016, 11:16 AM

Which im no coach nor does my opinion matter but the entire D looked asleep with the exception of a few plays. There were a lot of missed tackles, crappy coverages, and just blown plays. I have a feeling those boys caught it hard when the game was over! As for the QB situation i sure hope nothing happens to DW. NS actually looked pretty good but KB looked mighty rusty. I guess im just being a little picky and a little spoiled from the last season but they have a ton of work to do! Cant wait for the season to start but a little nervous over the Auburn game. Go Tigers!

Tucker Isreal

Apr 10, 2016, 11:50 AM

Looked Sharp passing the ball it's hard to determine actual qb kb did look off passing but there were plays where all the qbs were moving well in the pocket and were sacked based on a fingertip touch....defense did look spread thin and a lot of youth and guys lining up for the first time....put all the 1s on the field at the same time things will change....and the others have tape now to go back and study during summer...I expect a MUCHIHA DIFFERENT product come Auburn

Re: Tucker Isreal

Apr 10, 2016, 4:19 PM

Israel looked better than I expected, but his most blatant drop pass was that near pick-six.

Apr 10, 2016, 3:14 PM [ in reply to I was there watching the game and i wasnt real pleased either ]

i actually thought tucker israel was prolly even better than bryant, based ONLY on yesterday´s game/performance. tucker threw some good balls, & stats would´ve been much better if a few really good throws weren´t blatantly dropped.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

"blatently" is too strong a word for those dropped balls

Apr 10, 2016, 3:57 PM

Trevion needs some work at those high passes. Cain, Williams, Leggett would have caught them for sure~!

Israel most blatant drop pass was that near pick-six; but, I agree, he has potential.

Look back at your comment last year on the spring game. I bet you said the same thing..lol

Re: New Story: Brent Venables after spring game: "I wasn't real pleased"

Apr 10, 2016, 12:03 PM

I'm not worried. There is always some day during spring practice that the players get on the coaches. This one lacked feeling and it's always just a kick in the pants to keep them working during the summer. All is well.

Spring Game Opinion

Apr 10, 2016, 2:50 PM

I take it like this they have been hitting each other all practice and they are tired of hitting each other, and Spring Games they never show there real packages or plays on offense and defense. Its basically a live scrimmage so not much to see and the plays are very vanilla not to show other teams what we really have. That's what I take from spring games, we will be fine guys trust our coaches. I also watched some FSU spring game on E$PN 3 and they didn't look good either. You can't really put much into the spring games anymore. We will be good on both offense and defense only real question marks are special teams. Go Tigers!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Spring Game Opinion

Apr 11, 2016, 1:17 PM

I agree. Are the defensive guys supposed to go out there trying to kick the stuffing out of our offensive players in a spring game? And are the offensive players supposed to make all sorts of crazy cuts in a meaningless scrimmage? It's like watching a split baseball squad playing against each other. The Tigers still have almost five months to work out and practice. Same for everyone else.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So what?

Apr 10, 2016, 3:14 PM

He'll find something to bich about after we win the Oculus Trophy this year. That's how he earns a living.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgringofhonor-clemsontiger1988-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We're fine. Except.... you guessed it, SPECIAL TEAMS.

Apr 10, 2016, 6:07 PM

Dang its frustrating. I know it was windy you have to be kicking with the wind about half the time. We had maybe ONE kickoff reach the endzone. How is this possible? Do our kickers skip leg day or something? ffs. Everyone clapped when Scott had a good return... have they forgotten that giving up returns was a huge issue last year????

We are solid and deep at RB and WR. I think both lines will be good or great. I think we start the season as good at LB and become great. Not so sure about the other DB's yet but I think our WR's will push them in practice and they will have to be decent to not get completely embarrassed all the time.

Obviously QB is pinned on DW but don't get so down on KB. A huge part of KB's game is running which isn't possible in touch football. We can't expect a NCG with a backup QB anyway. I'm pretty sure he would be hard to beat with a decent defense and all the offensive talent on his side. He would be hard to stop in a run heavy read option....Gallman alone is hard to stop.

On a side note it was good to be back in Clemson. Great weather for walking the campus and hiking table rock.
