Trump on Vaccines

After Biden thanked Trump for his efforts on the vaccine, Trump talks about how the vaccine is so great in a much more visible fashion than he has previously. In true narcissistic fashion, Trump is now OK stating his true feelings since Biden has said good things about him. Yes, he’s against mandates. But he also said the vaccine is one of the greatest things ever invented.
Alex Jones and others are hating Trump for these comments.
I know Trump has never said the vaccine is a bad thing. But he also has never encouraged his followers to take the vaccine. Let’s not forget that Trump was a Democrat back in the day when he considered running for president in 2004 as a Democrat. He was a big fan of the Clintons.
My opinion of Trump is that he is only about how to get the most votes. He has no real personal convictions. Of course all politicians are like this, but Trump is more like this than any politician I can remember. I’m convinced that Trump always understood the value of the vaccine, but he was afraid to state what he really thought because he thought his followers wouldn’t like it.

I have not taken the vaccine. I don’t really care what Trump, Biden or any politician says about it.

If you're young and free of ANY underlying medical issues, I agree with you. Otherwise please get a jab. I'm in my late 40s and I'm fully vaxxed x 2 and boosted x 1. Just had a healthy friend in his 50s pass away from COVID. Felt like a wake up call!

I’m sincerely sorry about your friend. I’m not young ,57, but I’m in better shape and health than most my age. I’ve had Covid so that’s my reason for not taking the shot. If I had not had Covid I guess I would have a more difficult decision to wrestle with. I do appreciate the concern.

Supposedly your natural immunity doesn't last forever. I have had it as well, but it's under a year that we are all good.....supposedly.

I understand that’s what we’ve been told but that’s not correct. It’s most likely years or even lifetime. Anyway, that’s what I’m counting on based on actual science. I do think everyone should make the decision they feel most comfortable with however.

Respectfully , I understand that’s what some are saying. I think we will see that’s not accurate. My wife and I actually got a very direct exposure about a week and a half ago. We were baby sitting an 18 month old. She was slobbering all over us, trying to stick her slobbery fingers in our mouth, etc. The very next day her parents told us she had a fever and was Covid positive. We are having no issues at all. Lucky? Still immune? I think immune.

Could be true, but a recent Johns Hopkins study begs to differ. Only benefits me if you are accurate, but the studies say you are wrong. They are still learning though and adapting. The "facts" are always changing.

Not sure if you saw, but the first confirmed US omicron death was an unvaccinated man who had recovered from a prior strain. 51 or so with some unspecified pre-existing conditions.

One thing you might do: ask your doctor to order an antibody titer test. You would have an absolute answer on how much antibody protection you have, now. Worth thinking about it? Be safe, live large and HNY.

The first time I got it the symptoms were barely there, but the 2nd time I was in the hospital for over a week with a pneumonia and low oxygen levels. That said, maybe the first time was a false positive? WHo knows?

I know two women, 38 and 40, who had mild chickenpox at four or so. One got chickenpox again in her teens and the other got shingles in her teens. Both were blamed on a mild case not triggering an adequate immune response.

I think it's simple math. Trump isn't very good at math, mind, considering he's lost more money than any other American in numerous years and declared four bankruptcies, but this isn't complicated math here: his voters are dying at an alarming rate.
We're well over 800,000 dead now, headed relentlessly for a million...and the vast majority of those dying now are unvaccinated. Two-thirds or more of the unvaxxed are conservatives, and the impact is probably more when you consider the older you get the more you trend red...and the more politically active you tend to be. So Trump's probably lost 300,000+ more voters from his base than the Dems have, easily, and worse, he's losing the ones who tend to vote reliably. That's a big, big hit, averages out to 6,000+ per state. In a big purple battleground state like Georgia it's probably a 12,000-or-more swing...when you consider Trump lost Georgia by that infamous 10,800 votes, even a non-genius observer can see why that's a huge problem...and the GOP is losing more of its already-aging base every day.
So Trump really needs his voters to knock off this anti-vax stuff and start jabbing or it's going to show up bigly in three years when he needs them. If he's down 20K or 30K key voters in Georgia, that's a massive swing he knows full well he can't afford since demographics are going to hack off another 20-30K all on their own.
Father Time is working against Trump and the GOP right now. The last thing he can afford is to lose a million voters to COVID on top of that. And he knows it.

Trump will NOT be the nominee. He's way too toxic. I can only hope his legal issues do him in. It will be Nikki Haley! Mark it down. She's smart, competent, compassionate, educated (Clemson), very sweet and approachable, and experienced. She also comes from an immigrant family (India).
She will be the first woman president.

When are you people going to understand that the lesser of two evils is to take a vaccine compared to taking your chances with Covid? So far no reports of anyone growing two heads. Of course who knows what will happen in the future, but I don’t distrust the government so much that I think they are being irresponsible with clinical trials etc. I still believe that the overwhelming majority of people in this country are good. There are a few bad apples of course, but the Internet nut jobs have distorted peoples thinking into a distrust of good hard-working people that is not warranted.
Thank God the Internet wasn’t around when the polio vaccine was discovered.

could go on a media blitz to get people to get vaccinated, but that's not his job. He's not the President. And once he inserted himself into the discussion, I am confident that every shortfall would be put on him anyway. "He should have stayed out of it...he's not the President...he's too divisive and his support is counterproductive." Obviously can't prove that...just my perspective based on the fact that a significant part of people want to blame him for everything.
There is a President right now, and if he thought Trump publicly supporting the vaccine in some sort of PR blitz would be helpful, why didn't he reach out? Where is the leadership there? Why not? Because he doesn't like him? People die because he doesn't like Trump? That's the leadership we signed up for? There are plenty of right wing politicians who resonate with those voters who got the vaccine. Did Biden reach out to any of them? Any...to ask for help in unifying support for what seems to be an effective solution. I've read several posts alluding to how both Trump and Biden failed. Again, I disagree. I think Biden has been a horrible failure and Trump could have done things better. The difference is that Biden campaigned on magic pixie dust solutions and had 2 vaccines in the pocket and 1 on the way (as I recall), mounds more knowledge about the disease, better treatments and forewarning about Delta and Omicron. And yet he's done nothing of influence or impact that I can see? Can't reach out to right-wing voters? How is that leadership? Black and Hispanic vaccination rates still lag White rates (reference Fig. 2: https://www.kff.org/coronavirus-covid-19/issue-brief/latest-data-on-covid-19-vaccinations-by-race-ethnicity/ )...are Black and Hispanic voters Trump disciples? When did that happen?
Anyway, back to the facts - it is being suggested that Trump did not support the vaccine(s) and that suggestion is provably false.

"Why wouldn't he reach out"?
Are you kidding?
What in Trump's history suggests he's capable of anything besides a narcissistic sociopath's self-interest? And he's full of spite and venom atop that.
I don't think anybody rational would remotely expect cooperation of any kind from Trump, ever. If he's suddenly pro-vax it's because he's looking at the demo breakdown of COVID deaths and realizing his base is getting decimated.

How do we explain blacks being the lowest vaccinated group if it’s about Trump? Blacks vote democrat way over 90%. Im just not getting the whole Trump / anti vax narrative. As I’ve mentioned many times I am not vaccinated. I promise my decision has less than zero to do with Donald Trump.

I just think it’s too easy to classify people into groups. I don’t know maybe some people do base the decision on politics. For me it’s always simply been about understanding natural immunity and basing my decision on that. Maybe I’m oversimplifying but it really is that simple for me.

No question that it became political on both sides. That’s a shame. One sentence in the article did talk about unfounded fears of the vaccine. I wouldn’t call the fears unfounded. Most people are just fine after the shot but I’ve seen enough to not fault anyone who remains cautious.

Why post something not only full of nonsense but also flat out wrong?
https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/trump-booed-alabama-rally-after-telling-supporters-get-vaccinated-n1277404
What would give you the desire to make something up like this? I know someone will say TDS, but I just don’t get it. The only thing I can think is a distraction tactic. You had Trump telling his supporters to get vaxed. You also had Biden say he would get rid of Covid and Kamala say she wouldn’t get vaxed if Trump won. Other than distraction- what does Trump have to do with any of this?

reducing regulations by using the seat to push CDC, NIH and others involved in developing the vaccine. I understand being so emotional you can't accurately remember how this all started but that doesn't excuse false information or subjective opinion.

I don't get how you can think or say Trump hasn't done a fair share of bearing the load on vaccines. He lead the charge in getting the vaccine funded and on course.
I have nothing special for Trump these days but I do appreciate honesty and a clear coverage of all the facts.

Clarity on the OP
Dec 30, 2021, 7:52 PM
|
|
Trump clearly did a great job speeding up the vaccine process. No question about it. So in retrospect I should’ve been more clear on the op. What I don’t understand about Trump is that he clearly could’ve taken a victory lap about the rapid development of vaccines and how it helps society. But because he’s so worried about his right wing base he was not as vocal as he should’ve been about the benefits of a vaccine. I know he said some good things about it but he has been extremely low-key. I think we can all agree on that. This is why I think Trump is more concerned with winning then doing what is best for our society. He’s a complicated guy, that I think there’s a part of him that knows the difference between right and wrong. But his narcissism supersedes that and makes him a very flawed person.

His moderate politics didn't come across as moderate in his personality. Was not a good leader to the country. I was happy with his Supreme Court nominations. Roberts was probably the most brilliant I've heard at the Senate, but Barrett is brilliant too.
