Wonder how many White people with genuine Charleston accents are left?

Blacks of course have a different accent especially if true Gullah.

Not many.

It will die out completely in another 20 years.

The Geechie accent is also interesting. And it too is dying

It's not Gullah, not Chawstun, but a mix of the two in a way.

Best example would be in a phone number. (803) 389-7435. A geechie man would say "eeit oh shree, shree eeit noin, sebun fo shree foive". Basically a white version of gullah that mixes the charleston and gullah accents. I know Google will say Geechie is mainly "georgia gullah" and Gullah is native to SC, but the white people who spoke with a mix of Gullah, as a kid, were called geechie.

This guy is what my grandfather would have called geechie

It's a sort of gullah dialect, but different. Most geechie people could speak gullah pretty well, and this guy was no exception.

True Gullah is dead. Gone. You can find a few very old

folks on the sea islands mainly, who still carry a thick Gullah accent, but the true Gullah dialect is gone. You would need a translator for true Gullah. I watched Gullah die as a kid hunting. The cooks who cooked the meals at the hunting club are a good example. As a young boy we had a cook named Mary Frazier. She spoke true Gullah. You could literally not understand her if she was talking to her daughter, Bernice. But she could slow the accent some when she spoke to me and I could understand her, barely. Mary passed away and Bernice kept cooking for us. She had a thick Gullah accent, but I could understand her pretty well. As she aged, her daughter, Mary's granddaughter Madeline, started helping. She had a faint Gullah accent. I could understand her perfectly and one would guess she was from Jamaica or the Caribbean with her accent.

Now Aw-thuh Rav-uh-nell had a thick Charleston accent, but his accent is also nearly dead. My father had a slight Charleston accent, and my FIL has a thicker one. He sleeps with his head on a pull-uh, which always cracks me up. He was from Manning. Now Charleston is the prototypical "southern accent" everyone in Hollywood butchers. But in reality, it's far more localized than people realize. It's so famous though, people assign the accent to the entire American South, when in fact it's only found in a portion of SC. Nowhere was this more apparent than in Australia. We threw those blokes for a loop when we visited. Literally no one there could place us. We weren't from Whales, Scotland, Ireland, America, they were absolutely shocked when we said we were from the US. My dad's southern accent also threw them for a loop because all they hear of southern accents in the US are in movies, and Hollywood butchers the Chawstun accent.

Is what it is I guess.

I saw the marine warning earlier

but it didn't say anything about explosive testing. Exclusion zones around navy ships isn't new, and they rerelease those randomly through the summer months.

My mother is about 7 miles from that by water--that must have sounded like a bomb if thats what it was.
