And with the "Anything goes" lack of rules right now, who can really blame some of these kids for wanting to "get MINE!"
But, I think Marcus Spears said it right. When he was talking about college, he said "Young man, make a 40 year decision, not a one or two year decision. I can go back to LSU right now, and be treated like royalty, even though it has been YEARS since I went there."
These kids that transfer around for a quick buck are not going to be treated that way by ANY school, unless they happen to be the incredibly rare case like a Joe (Punchable Face) Burrow. And, make no mistake, that kind of success IS exceedingly rare. We see the few high profile success stories each year, but there are literally THOUSANDS of kids in the football transfer portal these days. The lion's share will wind up no better than even when all is said and done, and many have to transfer to a lower classification school if they want real playing time. And, that won't get them the recognition they so desperately seek.

Worse, about half of the athletes that hit the portal NEVER find a taker, and have thrown away their current situation (scholarship) for NOTHING.

There is a small number of players for whom it makes sense especially now that it can result in a payday.
This is especially true for an underrecruited out of high school player who can now move to a power league.
If someone is paying $800k for a basketball guard, that's life altering money for someone who may never play a day in a professional league.
If it were my kid, I would tell them screw loyalty to the school. Get paid.
For the vast majority of players in the portal, they should just give up the sport and concentrate on getting their degree from a decent school.

And a majority of them won't find a new team and will effectively be done playing college football and, by extension, college entirely.

Every team knows how many scholarships they can have so whether they are filled by kids from high school or men from other schools is really immaterial as long as they are winners. Nothing is ruined, just watch the basketball tournament and you will see that.
