pharmacist's duties. If a drug ingredient hits against a patient's allergy, the drug is flagged in the system and the pharmacist will consult with them when they come to pick it up, or they'll call the provider directly for another prescription. The provider's system (especially if it is in a hospital) likely does the same.

But the warnings are based on the Main Ingredient, not the benign other ingredients like cellulose acetate that are common to many meds.

You continue to ignore my point: how can anyone know if the patient is allergic to a Main Ingredient he has never taken if he doesnt take it first?

oh_its_JimmyHEYHEY®

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wife, PharmD, said allergies are mostly with the active ingredient.

But inactive ingredients are also something the Pharmacist can and will flag.

I'm not ignoring you point. I'm simply refusing to play along with your extrapolations that nobody can possibly know if they're allergic to a main ingredient so that warning is stupid to include. Because people are allergic to active ingredients. Pharmacists do flag allergies.

BOOM. PharmD'd.

Like if you had a latex allergy, you would know you had a latex allergy, and your medical records would probably, by now, note a latex allergy.

But yes. If you did not know you had a latex allergy, and the first time you came in contact with a latex glove, you got a rash, you would not know before then, but I didn't think such a scenario needed to be spoken into existence since it seemed rather...obvious.

I notice many of the TV drug ads' fine print mention issues with "the perineum"

1

May 28, 2025, 9:18 AM
Reply

which would make me NEVER want to take that drug, for any reason.

I'll live with whatever malady I have before I would want a swollen, painful, bleeding perineum.

Some medications can have side effects that affect the perineum (the area between the anus and the ########), with varying degrees of severity.

Common Side Effects:
Yeast infections: Certain medications, like SGLT2 inhibitors used for type 2 diabetes (e.g., Jardiance, Farxiga), increase the risk of yeast infections in the genital area due to increased sugar in the urine.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs): Similarly, SGLT2 inhibitors can increase the risk of UTIs.
Skin irritation or rash: Some medications, like certain antibiotics or topical treatments, can cause skin irritation, redness, or rash in the perineal area.

Rare but Serious Side Effects:
Fournier's gangrene (necrotizing fasciitis of the perineum): SGLT2 inhibitors have been linked to a very rare but serious infection called Fournier's gangrene, which can lead to tissue damage and require hospitalization and potentially surgery.

Severe allergic reactions: In rare cases, some individuals may experience severe allergic reactions to certain medications, which can manifest as swelling, itching, or difficulty breathing in the perineal area.

Specific Medications and Potential Perineal Side Effects:
SGLT2 inhibitors (e.g., Jardiance, Farxiga, Invokana): Increased risk of yeast infections, UTIs, and Fournier's gangrene.

Certain antibiotics: May cause yeast infections, UTIs, or skin irritation/rashes.
Topical corticosteroids: Can cause skin thinning, irritation, or rebound itch if used improperly.
Chemotherapy: Can cause changes in vaginal tissue and moisture levels, potentially leading to dryness, irritation, or soreness.

Anyone with that WILL have tissue damage, WILL require hospitalization and WILL require surgical removal of the gangrenous tissue.

The upside is that any surgeon working on such a person will return home with that stench on his/her skin and hair and Rover will be even more excited to see and smell master.
