from Eugene, Oregon for our Clemson Tigers. Technically, the meet is already underway as the men's hammer began at 5:00 PM ET and the decathlon started at 3:30 PM ET, but the bulk of the competition doesn't start until later this evening at 7:30 PM ET beginning with the men's 4 x 100 meter relay prelims.

Clemson's first competitor of the day will be Ethan Cocco in the men's javelin finals beginning at 8:45 PM ET. Ethan is ranked 18th out of the 24 athletes in the event. He is scheduled to throw 1st in flight 2. You can watch the event live here on ESPN plus: https://www.espn.com/watch/player/_/id/dd54e759-ba46-466b-93ba-13703221d96c#bucketId=1

Next for the Tigers will be D'Andre Anderson in the men's 400 meter prelims starting at 9:00 PM ET. D'Andre will be in the 3rd and final heat and will run out of lane 9. He is ranked 16th (in a tie with one other athlete in the event) out of the field of 24. He is ranked 7th out of the 8 in heat 3. 9 total athletes will advance: the top 2 in each heat plus the next 3 fastest times. You can watch the event live here on ESPN 2 or ESPN plus: https://www.espn.com/watch/catalog/74d54e57-c7e6-38fd-9fe8-b98414ad0ea9/ncaa-track-field#bucketId=29779&sourceCollection=Browse_By_League

Clemson's next competitor will Tarees Rhoden in the men's 800 meter prelims at 9:14 PM ET. Rhoden will be in heat 2 of 3 and will be running in lane 5. Tarees is ranked 6th out of the 24 in the event. He is ranked 2nd out of the 8 in his heat. The same as with the 400, 9 total athletes will advance to the final, the top 2 in each heat plus the next 3 fastest times. You can watch the event live here on ESPN 2 or ESPN plus: https://www.espn.com/watch/catalog/74d54e57-c7e6-38fd-9fe8-b98414ad0ea9/ncaa-track-field#bucketId=29779&sourceCollection=Browse_By_League

Clemson's final competitor of the day will be Courtney Lawrence in the men's shot put finals at 9:40 PM ET. Courtney is ranked 11th out of the field of 24. He is slated to throw 5th in flight 2. You can watch the event live here on ESPN plus: https://www.espn.com/watch/player/_/id/935e4d62-59bd-4a11-b131-c7fccdf7efa2#bucketId=1

live results/schedule: https://flashresults.ncaa.com/Outdoor/2024/index.htm

*note for clarity: The track events can all be watched as part of the main coverage of the meet on ESPN 2 (or ESPN plus if you prefer). However, the field events each have their own specific streams exclusively on ESPN plus, so if you want to watch the field events in their entirety, you'll need to watch the specific stream for the event you wish to see. (I linked the specific stream needed for each Clemson event in the above description.) The main coverage of the track meet on ESPN 2 begins at 7:30 PM ET.

**additional note: In case of confusion about the start times, please note that all the times I listed on this post are in Eastern Time, for the convenience of the majority of us. You'll see that the times listed on the live results link are different, which is because they are listed in Pacific Time due to the meet being held in Oregon. On clemsontigers.com they just listed the times in Pacific without specifying that distinction.

Be good to see more track and field coverage on tnet. Guess I was a little spoiled when I went to Clemson. I had the privilege of watching Shaun Crawford when I was in school. At that time, Clemson had a top tier program when it came to track and field.

Trying to promote Clemson track and hopefully get people a bit more interested

Shawn was an all-time great! Probably the greatest male track athlete in Clemson history. An Olympic gold and an Olympic silver for the United States plus 3 NCAA individual championships for Clemson all in the 200 meters. One of only 2 Clemson male track athletes ever to win 3 individual NCAA titles. 11-time All-American. First former Clemson athlete to win an Olympic gold medal in an individual event for the United States. Clemson Hall of Famer. It just doesn't get much better than that. I'm glad you got to see him compete, that must've been fun.

The program hasn't been as good overall recently as it was in the late '90's and early 2000's, but I think Mark Elliot has things headed in the right direction. He's done an excellent job in the transfer portal and with recruiting international talent from all over the world, especially the Carribean. And there are some great recruits on the way. The ACC championship last year was massive, especially considering how the program was almost cancelled just 2 years prior. It's very impressive how well the team has been able to rebound from that. Hopefully the outdoor track can be rebuilt at some point soon as well, that would be another major step in the right direction.

D'Andre runs 47.10, 8th out of 8 in his heat and 23rd out of 24 overall. He had a good first 250 meters or so, but really had a hard time in the final straight and fell behind. He probably had to go out a lot faster than he's accustomed to in order to give himself a chance against this level of competition, and there was also a fair bit of wind on the last straight which gave everybody some trouble. That was far from his best performance, but considering that he was a long shot to shot to qualify, I'm glad he sent it out aggressively to at least give himself a chance. D'Andre is a senior, and of course no one really knows exactly how much eligibility anyone has left these days, but I believe this was it for him. If that was indeed his last college race, then congratulations to him on a great Clemson career which included 5 individual 2nd place finishes at the ACC championships, as well as one 3rd place finish, two 2nd place finishes, and one first place finish in relays at the ACC championships. Perhaps most memorably, he was a key contributor to the ACC team championship in 2023, Clemson's first men's outdoor title since 2004, and just two and a half years since the program was rescued from the brink of extinction. That will forever be a special and glorious Clemson moment, one that would not have been possible without D'Andre Anderson. Thank you, D'Andre! You did the Tigers proud.

Tarees runs 1:46.18 to finish 2nd in heat 2 and earn an automatic qualification to the final. He also had the 2nd fastest time overall. He got out quickly as always, then stayed in 2nd for most of the first lap. He fell back a bit in the 3rd 200, but made a nice strong move on the home straight to clinch the auto-Q. Great result.

His first throw goes 221 ft 5 in. His second throw goes 227 ft 8 in. That puts him currently in 12th place overall with one throw left for a chance to make the final round. He'd have to crack the top 9, which would require a throw of greater than 232 ft 5 in.

Again, I can't be sure of exact eligibility, but he's also a senior, so if this is it for him, congratulations to Ethan on a great Clemson career. He has a 3rd place finish at the ACC championships this season as well as back-to-back national championship meet appearances. He was also a key member of that men's team ACC title in 2023. Thank you, Ethan!

Courtney's first throw was 62 ft 8.50 in, his second throw was 63 ft 11 in, and his third throw was fantastic: a personal best of 65 ft 4.25 in to put him in 4th place overall and qualify for the final. Remember, he came in ranked 11th in the field. What a clutch time to have a personal best throw! He'll have a great opportunity now in the final round.

There were no other improvements in round 6 except for the winner, who improved on his mark, so there was no further change in the place order. Courtney Lawrence finishes in 5th place with a personal best throw of 65 ft 4.25 in. He scores 4 points for Clemson. All in all, that's a tremendous performance by Courtney. Getting a new personal best at the national championships is incredible and very well timed. It's also very impressive that he finished 5th after coming in ranked 11th in the field. Congratulations to Courtney on a great season, well deserved.

The Tigers are ranked 5th out of the 8 teams in their heat. The top 2 teams from each heat plus the next 3 fastest times will qualify for the final. Leading it off for Clemson will be Aleksandra Stoilova. She will hand off the baton to Antoinette Van der Merwe. Clemson's third leg will be Ockera Myrie. And anchoring for the Tigers will be Shantae Foreman. Well it was great news for the Tigers, they qualified! Clemson finished 4th in heat 2 with a season best time of 43.26. This put them in 8th place overall and earned them the last of the 3 overall time qualifier spots. This was an excellent performance by the Tigers as they drastically outperformed their seeding; They were not predicted to qualify. It was an excellent race all round. Stoilova had a great start, Antoinette and Ockera had great exchanges and ran strong legs, which kept the momentum going smoothly and kept the Tigers in good position. That set up Shantae Foreman nicely, and she delivered with a strong final leg to finish it off for Clemson. So the Tiger women's 4 x 100 is off to the final!

Still, that's a strong ending to a great season for Oneka, who won the ACC championship in this event this season. disaster for Chepngetich

Jun 6, 2024, 10:52 PM
Reply

Gladys finishes 4th in heat 1 and runs 2:02.45. She ends up 16th overall, nowhere close to qualifying. I'm really not sure what happened. She went out strong just like normal, and was tied for 1st place for almost the entire race entering the final turn. Gladys has legitimate 400 meter speed and great endurance, so she normally finishes very strong and has no trouble out-kicking other 800 meter runners at the end of a race. But it was clear something was off today. She got passed by several other runners on the final straight and didn't seem to have a response. Then a few yards from the finish line, she kind of pulled up and awkwardly veered off to the outside. Sometimes that can be a sign that a runner has pulled a hamstring, cramped up, or gotten a side-stitch, so maybe something like that was what happened. But I'm really not sure. Either way, that's a very disappointing end to what was otherwise a sensational freshman season for Gladys Chepngetich in cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track which included an ACC outdoor championship in the 800 meters this season, as well as a 1500 meter runner up, and NCAA championship appearances in indoor and outdoor. A truly remarkable freshman season for Chepngetich. But it's a sour ending here in Oregon, as the freshman phenom with the 3rd fastest time in all the NCAA this season fails to qualify for the final and runs well short of her usual capability. That one stings.

Gadson fails to qualify

Ken'Naria Gadson finishes 4th in heat 1 of the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 57.32. This puts her at 14th overall. She does not qualify for the final. Gadson didn't get out very quickly, and seemed to be lagging behind most of the field for the first 250 meters or so, but she had a very strong finish and passed several other athletes to pull up into 4th. Ken'Naria was always going to be a long shot to qualify, and she did significantly outperform her ranking headed into the event. All in all, that's still a solid ending to a very good outdoor season this year for Gadson, who was 3rd in both the 400 meters and the 400 meter hurdles this season at the ACC championships. She was also 3rd in the 400 meters at the ACC indoor championships. Ken'Naria is a senior, and I believe this is her last season. However, she will still be able to run on the 4 x 400 meter relay team later tonight.

Last Event Today

Jun 6, 2024, 11:14 PM

The last event of the night for the Tigers will be the women's 4 x 400 meter relay prelims. The event gets underway at 11:48 PM ET. Clemson enters the event ranked 16th out of the 24 teams in the field. Clemson will run in heat 1 of 3. The Tigers are ranked 5th in their heat. Once again, it's the same rules for qualification. The 2 fastest teams in each heat plus the next 3 fastest times overall qualify for the final. Clemson's scheduled order is as follows: Courtney Williams will lead off. She will hand off the baton to Ken'Naria Gadson running second. Mackenzie Osher will run the third leg for the Tigers. And Gladys Chepngetich will anchor the relay for Clemson. Now, as I mentioned earlier, Chepngetich might have gotten injured in the 800 meter prelims earlier, so that lineup could be subject to change. I'll try to post an update if I find any further information. Once again, you can watch the event live on the main broadcast of the meet on ESPN 2 here: https://www.espn.com/watch/player/_/id/b5f2e31d-05de-434b-8242-2f3ebbab898d/redirected/true#om-navmethod=player%3Arow0%3ALive%3Aslot2

Another Frustrating Result

Jun 7, 2024, 12:23 AM
Reply

More trouble. This time in the 4 x 400. The first half of the race went very much like the how the East qualifier went for Clemson in Lexington, Kentucky 2 weeks ago. Courtney Williams led off and didn't do a great job keeping up with the field, but Ken'Naria Gadson ran a great second leg and caught Clemson right back up with the lead pack in 4th place. But then Mackenzie Osher got bumped, by the Kentucky runner it looked like, just after she received the handoff. Unfortunately, that really killed her momentum and she was unable to catch back up with the lead group. By the time Gladys Chepngetich got the baton, she was so far behind there was essentially nothing she could do. Very frustrating result. Maybe Mark Elliott will protest the result and see if the officials might DQ Kentucky. But either way, it likely won't matter. I can understand losing if you just get beat, but it always stings to lose out because of something like that. To be fair to the Kentucky runner, I don't think it was deliberate.

Anyway, Clemson ends up running a 3:32.66 to finish 6th in their heat. Overall results are still pending, but barring a disqualification, this will already eliminate the Tigers from any chance to qualify for the final.

4 x 400 update: event under protest

Jun 7, 2024, 12:40 AM

All 3 heats are now final, and Clemson ends up finishing 18th overall, well outside of the top 9 qualifiers for the final. However, the event is now under protest. They don't disclose the specific nature of the protest on the results page, so I have no way of knowing what exactly it is, but it very well could be a Clemson protest against Kentucky for potentially flagrantly impeding Mackenzie Osher at the beginning of leg 3. If I understand the rules correctly, it is possible that the team or athlete that such a foul is committed against in a situation like this can be awarded a spot in the final if the officials determine that there was indeed significant interference. That's the reason why they only have 9 qualifying spots for the final: it gives them one extra lane on the track open to award to an extra competitor in the final in case of a situation like this. It is kind of a judgement call, so there's really no telling how this could go, plus, as I already said, I don't even know for sure if that's what the protest is about. But there might be a chance here. I'll provide further updates once I figure out what the decision is.

Unfortunately, it appears that Kentucky was not disqualified, and Clemson was not awarded a spot in the final.

The first two legs on that relay team, Courtney Williams and Ken'Naria Gadson, are both seniors, and I believe that was the last college race. Congratulations to both of them on fine Clemson careers. Ken'Naria had 3 individual 3rd place finishes at the ACC championships this year (indoor 400 meters, outdoor 400 meters, outdoor 400 meter hurdles) and qualified individually for the national championships this season. Both athletes were major contributors for Clemson at the ACC level all 4 years of their time here. You did Clemson proud, thank you both!

I had forgotten to post the 4 x 100 meter relay results earlier. I have now posted them as a reply earlier in the thread where I initially posted the schedule and starting information for that event, but in case anyone missed that, here are the women's 4 x 100 meter relay results again from earlier:

Coots have been obsessing over Nyck

Harbor missing football camp training because for the Olympic sprint team. Well. their fears are over, as he finished in the middle of his 100 meter heat and did not qualify for the finals. Just a wild guess that if he is not one of the fastest 8 collegians, his chance of making the Olympic team are pretty slim!

Yeah, Nyck Harbor is a great sprinter, but the Olympic talk was always pretty ridiculous. He still did have a very impressive season, make no mistake about it. Though he was unable to reach the finals in either event, he did qualify for the national championship meet in both the 100 meters and the 200 meters as a freshman, which is very impressive. And he was only 1 spot short of qualifying in the 200. Regardless of what happens in the final tonight, he'll finish the meet having earned 16th place in the 100 and 10th place in the 200 at the national championships. In terms of season best times throughout this entire season in college, Harbor has the 36th fastest 100 time and the 12th fastest 200 time in the NCAA (prior to this meet). His 100 PR is 10.11 and his 200 PR is 20.20. Again, that's very impressive, especially for a freshman, but not good enough to be in the conversation for a US Olympic spot.

Remember, competition for the Olympics nowadays includes professional athletes, not just collegians and other amateurs. It's not unheard of for college sprinters to make the Olympic team, but it's not very common either, as most of their competition will be professionals, and there's only 3 spots in each event per country. So it's extremely difficult to do, especially in the US where the competition is incredibly good. Generally speaking, the only college track athletes you'll ever see make the US Olympic team will be those who win individual national championships in their event in college, often in dominant fashion. And a lot of times even that isn't good enough. Just to put things in perspective, at the 2020 US Olympic trials, the top 5 100 meter times were all under 10 seconds, and the top 4 200 meter times were all under 20 seconds.

By comparison, Nyck would probably be somewhere in the 10-20 range at the highest if you were to rank current college sprinters, and he hasn't come close to running those kinds of times yet. (Remember, in sprinting, a tenth of a second is a lot of time.) To his credit, his times are good enough to meet the required standard for participation in the US Olympic trials, so he could probably compete in the trials if he wished. And again, he's only a freshman, so it's certainly not out of the realm of possibility that he could be a legitimate candidate for the Olympics once he gets older. But right now, he's just not at that level. I think most of this talk came from Gamecock fans who got excited about Harbor's track success but don't really know much about the sport, so they started creating unrealistic narratives. Again, none of this is meant to dog on Harbor. He's a great college sprinter, and he's had an incredible season, especially for a freshman. But he's just not fast enough to make the US Olympic team, at least not right now.

Thanks for your detailed reply. I know all of that since I have been following the Olympics since the 60's and have attended them. I take exception that Nyck is a great sprinter. He is a good sprinter and how much he improves I guess we will find out. I still remember many of the young high school sprinters who were going to be world champions, like Houston McTeer, who once they matured you never heard of them again. There were exceptions, but not many.

You did make my point thought that Nyck has exactly zero chance of making this Olympic team, which was what the Coot fans were obsessing about. I hope Nyck does continue to get better and if he makes the Olympic team in another four years I will be pulling for him.

Tarees Rhoden will run for a national title in the men's 800 meter finals tonight at 10:14 PM ET. Tarees is ranked 4th out of the 9 athletes in the final. He will be running out of lane 7. Rhoden is the only Clemson athlete competing in the meet today. In case anyone is interested in watching the rest of the meet, today's events are all finals for the men, so it should be great high-stakes competition to watch. The main portion of the meet tonight gets underway at 9:00 PM ET starting with the 4 x 100 meters. You can watch the whole thing on ESPN 2 using the same link in the previous paragraph.

What a race. Tarees went out fast just like he always does and looked strong. He led the pack for the entire first 700 meters of the race. Often times in the past, the other competitors have been able to outkick him at the end at the national level. But entering the last turn, no one else seemed to be making any strong moves and Rhoden still looked good. He came around the final turn into the home stretch still in 1st place and I for a moment I thought he had a great chance to win. But alas, Shane Cohen and Sam Whitmarsh, who both have a great closing kick, were able to surge past Rhoden in the final 100 meters to take the top 2 spots. Tarees tried all he could to hang with them, but it just wasn't there, and he died a little bit at the end, allowing one more runner to sneak by him into 3rd right at the line.

It was somewhat heartbreaking because I thought he had a real chance to win this one, but at the same time, that was still a tremendous race by Tarees, and he ran his personal best in the biggest moment, so I really can't say anything negative about that. He really went for it and gave himself a great chance. He ran his way. Tarees is a senior, and I believe that was his last race as a Tiger. If so, what a way to end a career. 5 individual ACC championships, 1 individual ACC runner-up, 2 national championship meet appearances in both indoors and outdoors, and a crucial role in the ACC team championship in 2023, as he anchored the 4 x 400 meter relay victory that day to bring home the team victory. He was also a part of 4 total ACC championship winning 4 x 400 meter relay squads, and 2 more that finished runner-up. While it may not have been a win, that was still a great and fitting race to end Rhoden's collegiate career. He was truly an amazing Tiger. Thank you for all the great memories, Tarees!

final Clemson individual results:
Ethan Cocco: 15th (javelin), second-team All-American, 0 points scored
D'Andre Anderson: 22nd (400 meters), 0 points scored
Courtney Lawrence: 5th (shot put), first-team All-American, 4 points scored
Tarees Rhoden: 4th (800 meters), first-team All-American, 5 points scored

As a team, Clemson scores 9 total points to finish in a 3-way tie for 37th place overall at the meet, tied with Tennessee and Minnesota.

I know 37th place isn't great, but look who the Tigers finished just ahead of in a tie for 40th...
That's at least one big positive to come out of this meet (and this season) for Clemson.

Also of note: Clemson came into this meet ranked 48th, so they did outperform their expected rankings. For what it's worth, a certain group of chickens from Columbia came in ranked 19th, so that makes it even a bit sweeter in my opinion.

So you can add men's outdoor track and field to the large list of men's sports in which Clemson beat the coots this school year.

Clemson finishes 9th in the 4 x 100. Honestly, it was really a well-run race for the Tigers, both fast and clean. They were just up against superior competition, quite frankly. They actually got Shantae the baton about in the middle of the pack, but she really got overpowered at the end. You have to remember, she’s primarily a jumper. But either way, it was impressive they even made the final, so not too much disappointment. Foreman will compete in the triple jump finals here next for Clemson.

approaching Shantae's 3rd jump. The good news is that at this point, no one else not already in the top 9 has yet to take their 3rd jump. Shantae remains in 8th place. That means that she will remain in the top 9 and qualify for the final round regardless of what she does on her 3rd jump, so she's safe.

Shantae's 6th and final attempt goes foul. She got twisted around somehow on the landing and didn't make it very far. She looked frustrated after, so I'm not exactly sure what happened there. Maybe she picked up a minor injury during the round that gave her some trouble. Can't say for sure, but she looked a little off. She will finish the competition in 9th place.

Not her best performance today, but it was still a great season for Shantae, winning an ACC championship in the indoor triple jump. And she'll undoubtedly be an All-American as well. Congratulations to Foreman on a great year.

That concludes the Clemson participation in this meet, and marks the end of this track season for the Tigers. The Clemson women will unfortunately finish this competition with 0 points as a team, currently tied for 60th place overall in the team standings with a massive group of other teams. Here's the final rundown for the Clemson women:

Marie Forbes: doesn't place, no valid attempts (hammer throw), 0 points scored
Oneka Wilson: 12th (100 meter hurdles), second-team All-American, 0 points scored
Gladys Chepngetich: 16th (800 meters), second-team All-American, 0 points scored
Ken'Naria Gadson: 14th (400 meter hurdles), second-team All-American, 0 points scored
4 x 400 meter relay: 17th, 0 points scored
4 x 100 meter relay: 9th, 0 points scored
Shantae Foreman: 9th (triple jump), second-team All-American, 0 points scored

There's no way to sugar coat it. Failing to score a point in this competition is a big disappointment for this Clemson women's team, who entered the meet ranked 19th in the country. There were certainly some bright moments for several individuals during this season, but unfortunately, what hurt this women's team both indoors and outdoors at the ACC championships, as well as at this meet, was a failure to execute in the biggest moments. The Clemson women didn't perform up to their full potential in any of those 3 championship meets. It wasn't the same people each time, but there was a common theme of some crucially poor performances by some of the best athletes in key events in those competitions. And as a result, the Tigers were beaten by a less-talented Virginia Tech squad for the ACC indoor championship, and then beaten badly by what appeared to be an evenly-matched Duke team for the ACC outdoor championship. And they failed to score a single point at this national championship meet.

The future does look promising, as there were several young stars who showed out this season for Clemson. But there are also going to be some major holes to fill with the some of the seniors who will be departing. It will be an interesting offseason.
