Playoffs together this year? If not, you could make the argument that those two might make the ACC ATLANTIC the toughest division in college football when you look at it from say... Louisville s point of view.

I can't imagine what would have to happen to leave two Power 5 conference champs out and put two ACC teams in.

It should happen. One team undefeated and the other teams only loss is to the undefeated team. No dominant team from the PAC or Big whatever it is now.

Not the other way around IMO.
They have more quality schedule and if they put it to Ole Miss, Florida, UNC, & Miami yet lose a close game to Clemson they would be almost like a one loss Alabama.
If we lose we have no chance, our schedule is absolute cake this year.

I feel like it's possible, but extremely improbable. Now that most conferences have a championship game (or all Power 5 do now, actually), it seems unlikely they take a team that won't even make the conference title game.
FSU and Clemson obviously can't both play for the ACC Title. It's a shame, honestly. But that's how it is for now.

I don't see a team that doesn't play in their conferences championship game making the playoffs.

conference champions whether they had a title game or not. The title game might act as some kind of a tie-breaker if teams are extremely close, but their main competition was a 2-loss Stanford team.
2015 Ohio State would actually be a better comparison to an 11-1 Clemson/FSU loser this year and they were 7th in the final FPS rankings.

expectations and certainly weren't always impressive, but 10 of their 12 wins were by 2+ TDs. They won at VT by 18 and at Michigan by 29. That's a far cry from nearly losing every game.
We had a couple less than stellar performances ourselves last year. Maybe not to the extent of OSU, but i don't think anyone would argue that we played great games at Louisville, Cuse, or SC. To be perfectly honest, half the teams in the country probably would've beaten us with as poorly as we played at SC. Fortunately for us that performance came against a putrid 3-9 team.

The problem with Ohio State last year is they picked the second-to-last game of the season to lose to Michigan State...and they did it at home. And in extremely unimpressive fashion, losing a poorly-played game 17-14.
Mind, they turned right around and stuck it to Michigan 42-13 in the Big House the very next week, but by that point the damage was done. Ohio State had been throwing up a ton of uninspired performances all year, and nobody seemed sold they were really a Top-5 team...and truthfully, until the Michigan game, and then the bowl game against Notre Dame, they didn't really ever look like one.

both have a chance to get into the playoff. The loser would still need help from another conference, but if Clemson and FSU destroyed the SECCG participants they would have an argument for getting both teams in ahead of the SEC champ.

We play each other too late in the year.
And we are not in the SEC.... so no. There will never be two ACC teams in a four team playoff.

allow it. Even if the roles were reversed and Clemson looses to FSU by small amount. FSU gets points for winning ACC CG while Clemson watches. Think about the other conference CGs going on and how those winners will get points and panel perception. The panel won't allow a runner-up Clemson or FSU over a Big 12, Big 10 or PAC 16 champion. I see them putting a SEC runner-up before a runner-up CU or FSU or OSU or MSU or Ore. Until we win consistently over the SEC we will always drive shotgun.

still pretty slim. I think politics would make it tough for them to select a team that didn't win its division. It would really take a perfect storm along the lines of Clemson blowing out everyone except losing an extremely close game at FSU. FSU blows out everyone else and is the consensus #1 team in the country. Auburn is a 10 win team in contention for the SEC West that Clemson handled with ease on their own field. South Carolina is shockingly not a horrible team that weighs down the schedule, and there's a lot of mayhem elsewhere in CFB so that Clemson's only real competition are a couple of 2-loss conference champs.
Even in that scenario i wouldn't feel confident of getting chosen over a couple of 2-loss champs though.
