Tony Elliott not very bright

David Hood asked Elliott if he ever considered letting Taisun take a few snaps and he said "no", that DJ is their guy and he has to go play and learn. With that statement, Taisun will not play a snap while DJ is at Clemson. I bet this does not sit well with the QB back ups, stating that no matter how bad DJ plays he will not be benched. I wouldn't be surprised if they enter the transfer portal. At least they would have a chance to play somewhere else and if they stay at Clemson they do not have a chance to play. Would this also have an impact of future recruits?

While I understand what you're saying, it's just coach speak. He can't say "yeah if DJ plays bad next week we'll bench him", he has to stick up for his starter regardless when posed that question.

Last I checked Clemson isn’t handing out engineering degrees …nor does Michelin hire dummies… Tony graduated with nearly a 3.6 gpa…
He most definitely is “bright”….
You can rightly question our offensive performance, but Tony is a pretty smart guy…
As was Chad Morris and Rob Spence…so obviously intelligence doesn’t necessarily correlate to great offenses…

This is what I was going to say. He graduated as 3.6 gpa engineer and was playing football full-time for us. Look at his back story too and the tragedy and adversity he has overcome. The guy is smart and has grit and is a credit to Clemson's reputation. But yeah, he does need to get the offense figure out.

well, you are only being compared to perhaps the greatest, most professional ready college qb of all time. Even if DW4 followed TL16 some would be complaining about all the INTs...
I think one has to be realistic that this offensive group isn't cohesive and the young kids are at different places with that they are being tasked to do and what they are seeing on the field. The coaching staff has yet to figure out what works best, it is getting better, that will cause the switch. Maybe this is a grinding offense compared to an explosive one.
In addition, I bet that TE's offense has been the most studied/analyzed units in the past 6 or so years. I think DC have kinda closed the gap and we will see the next evolution of what TE can do. I think TL did a great job being a the "2nd coach" and could read a D faster than anyone should. You can see DJ struggling there and that is causing the issues.

You seem to have a point. I like DJ and family but I do not see top programs treating their QBs with kid gloves.
TL16 got the opposite.

I saw this happen to a couple pitchers.

They tried to locate their pitches by forcing them with will, or rather focusing on the location they chose rather than focusing on the mechanical functions which locates a pitch. The period between pitches in divided into two portions. The first portion is evaluating the previous pitch, what I did wrong and how to fix it. The second portion of the downtime is dedicated to the next pitch. Where do I want to locate the ball as it crosses the plate and how to adjust mechanical functions to make that happen.
That's why DJ seems to wear lead shoes, why he is focused on the primary receiver rather than actually looking over the field. I also think his brain is failing to really evaluate the defense before the ball is snapped.
For those reasons I believe there will be a time when all this delusion collapses and we'll see a breakthrough. I'm also not ignoring the fact that some of our receivers and missing routes. That is a horrible distraction to a quarterback when at a certain time after the ball is snapped he looks for one of his receivers and discovers the receiver isn't where he is supposed to be. The natural inference for the QB is that he's in the process of a broken play.
I am certain that DJ's problem is in his head, even the lack of being able to move without leaving the pocket. Some of those factors are the reasons Kelly Bryant bailed too early and too often. Same with Tajh but Tajh had a sixth sense and plenty of experience bailing early so he was great when he did.

They already have a 5-star in the '22 class, and a leg up on 2023 graduate Arch Manning. I think guys who play at that level have the built-in athletic arrogance that nobody can beat them out. And the fact is the backup has no experience at all.

A “ leg up” on Manning? If you know something I don’t, please share. If I was Manning I’m not sure I would be feeling too good about Clemson right now.

Funny, I listened to TE and thought he IS the smart one in this arena. He was spot on his thinking with the team, almost like he know them and the key is making the explosive plays work and getting the young guys more experience.
As he said, no one is more loved than the backup QB... or backup OC.

You're never going to get a straight answer from these coaches in public, I'm sure its a dif thing behind closed doors....especially from Dabo. In Dabo's presser after the game it was the same ol story that we've heard a million times and giving GT credit when we all know it was our stupidity that made GT look better than they really are. Its annoying, but that's just how they are. Also, I don't think Tony Elliott has the stones to come out and say when he's wrong, he's clearly the type that's just going to keep hitting his thumb with a hammer until it doesn't hurt. His offensive scheme is designed for a team with no talent or playmakers in it.

First of all that shouldn’t even be elliots call. To me that is the head coaches decision on when to pull that plug. Everyone needs to chill out. It’s called growing pains we have inexperience in a lot of positions. Plug and play isn’t that easy. Even Alabama has struggled in some years but cranked it up when it matters. Sit back and enjoy the season.

I used to stick those pegs up my nose and dare my sister to pull it out. The first time my sister tried, she accidentally shoved it further in and I had to get my dad to get it out (he had looong needle nose pliers)! Ah, fun times...

DJ just needs to go out on the field and pay football and use his instincts. I think he is thinking too much and it is paralyzing him. Passing plays are designed to go to a certain receiver and if they are not open he has a second and third choice. He will start finding them if he starts having a little success. I'm not sure that we shouldn't start game with about a doze or so scripted plays. Something needs to be done to get him to relax.

But he has never had to be an offensive coordinator without major playmakers at QB, RB, and WR.
He has had an embarrassment of riches - until now.
For that reason, he hasn’t had to go through a lot of the growing pains almost all offensive coordinators do. He doesn’t know how to game plan or make adjustments like most offensive coordinators do. If he did, we wouldn’t see the failures we have seen under his watch.
That’s not to say that he can’t learn. I believe he can. But it’s painfully obvious that he doesn’t know yet.
Thankfully, he still has plenty of talent to work with. Here’s to him figuring it out soon.

Streeter needs to help develop and prep our QB’s too. That’s part of his position. He is failing at it currently. DJ has regressed and looks like a true freshman out there at the moment. Starts with streeter and ends with TE. Just speaking the truth.

Oklahoma 2014, KB led team in 2017.
I disagree.
I think he game plans extremely well (and when he is right, it is dominant) and is not afraid to make changes not always the right ones but he isn't Chad.
However, even like BV, sometimes finding the "right" answer is a longer than desired situation. He does not coach "well" from behind nor is he, ironically, not a good pick for offensive shootouts. Halftime adjustments are generally good when needed... but a lot of his plans don't need a lot.
The issue now is finding something that is effective to where DJ is now and that will allow him to evolve. That is a tough needle to thread.
