Saving Private Ryan is hard to top, especially for the landing scenes. Simply and literally awesome and awful.

someone such as Steven Spielberg where it would look and feel more realistic.
And I'd like to see him remake The Great Escape as well and make it appear realistic like a prison camp in WWII really was.

I remember watching The Longest Day when it first came out. I was young, but already a huge military history buff. That movie was extremely powerful to my young mind. Saving Private Ryan certainly ranks right up there with it for me now, for when I watched it I was much older and more acutely aware and far more respectful of the American servicemen and women who have - will make the ultimate sacrifice.
It is my opinion that those two movies, along with Band Of Brothers were made even greater by their avoidance of the typical Hollywood aggrandizement and popularization.

You must watch Greyhound is you’re into WW2.
Tom Hanls is outstanding. Won’t tell too much, but the plot is about a fleet of US ships and submarines crossing German U-boat infested waters. Believe they are transporting supplies across the sea. But run into some Germans.

a short movie that they had to tack some additional scenes with Elizabeth Shue into it to lengthen the overall time. You can tell the scenes don't really belong.

So many to choose from that are worthy of a mention. For a Naval standpoint I would pick the original Midway. For land I would pick the series Band of Brothers.

Don't forget anything about the Battle of Midway - June 4th-7th 1942. It turned the tide of the War in the Pacific.

and big name stars. And your list missed some... John Wayne, Sean Connery, Richard Burton, George Segal, Eddie Albert, Rod Steiger, etc. Plus a bunch of good "character actors"... you recognize their face but may not know their name. Amazing cast.

I rewatched Band of Brothers last week. I started The Pacific series yesterday. Very well done.
For movies, I like Saving Private Ryan, Patton, and Midway.

its a different type of focus, focusing on an all girls school in Copenhagen that was mistakingly bombed by the British who were meant to be targeting a secret Nazi Gestapo base in the city.
pretty heartbreaking stuff but a well done movie.

I was in the US Navy submarine service in 70’s and 80’s. Love Das Boot and The Enemy Below. But my favorite WWII movie is an off the wall “In Harm’s Way” with the Duke and Kirk Douglas. “We got us a gut-bustin’ mother-lovin’ Navy war!!”

is a fairly unknown WWII movie featuring Kiefer Sutherland which is really a more accurate telling of what we all know as The Bridge over the River Kwai. There is some occasional gripping voice over narration which makes the telling even more credible. At the movie's conclusion, one of the most prominent characters is shown in real life meeting one of his Japanese captors at the Burma Railway Museum. This man was nursed back to health from death's doorway by two Brits, both of whom very sadly were murdered by the Imperial Japanese Army shortly before the camp's liberation.

My great uncle was one of the guys that raised the flag or one of guys at top of hill at Iwo Jima on Dday pic. I was always told he was one of them, there are a couple guys, one particular that was named incorrectly and my family says that is him. He just died few years ago and he always said he carried that flag up. I cant confirm or deny, but he knew some gory details that he shared several yrs ago.

Liked Stalag 17 with William Holden and Neville Brand, who was a highly decorated WWII vet. Also both the movie 12 O'clock High and the tv series. I missed seeing Tom Selleck at least twice in the 1973 Midway. Will need to see it again. A cousin who jumped with the 82nd Airborne on D-day said Saving Private Ryan was the most realistic of the D-day movies. The actor William Windom, who has more than 250 movie and tv credits was in his unit, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment.

I had my family watch the first half of Saving Private Ryan the night before we visited the D-Day Memorial in Bedford, VA.
The two of them together was an emotional overload. It took us a couple days to finish SPR. As it is, I can't make it through the opening sequence without tearing up. The hero's interaction with his respectful but uncomprehending family members always gets me. They can't know what they don't know, but he never wants them to have to know. Extremely effective cinematography.
If you've never been to the DDM, make time for it next time you're in Central VA. It's not federal. Unfortunately due to budget constraints it's lacking a couple of the 10 dynamic sculptures that were a part of the original plan. But the overall park gives a more comprehensive outlook on the international effort that went into DDay than you normally get from a movie or even a book.

Bunch of good choices here. Saving Private Ryan was very well done.
Not D-Day related, but Downfall is a great WW2 movie on the last days of Hitler and the Generals. It became a bit of a parody with the one scene with Hitler ranting and people overdubbing what he was saying, but the movie is really good.

Thanks, for bringing the subject up on a special day. A lot of good movies and series have been discussed. On of my favorite war movies is Das Boot, it really depicts what submarine life was really like during that period.
