Ok, I know a lot of people have seen the reports the past few days that would indicate a decision on Clemson's future plans is imminent. I have been quiet because I wanted to make sure the info I had was correct, that all the pieces fit together, and I had to wait on my most trusted sources. I worked into the night last night and early this morning and I think I have a good sense of where Clemson stands.
Let’s parse it out….Yes, there is a BOT meeting scheduled for early next month. It’s been on the books for over a year. Will there be a piece where Graham Neff discusses the landscape and where we stand with realignment and expansion? Absolutely. But there will be no announcement that Clemson is leaving the ACC or has an invite from someone else.
And to tell you how rumors swirl and things get started – I received a text yesterday telling me that an “All Hands on Deck” meeting is scheduled for Oct. 11 with all of the coaches and Neff and President Clements. People see that date – considering Oct. 10th has been bandied about as a possible “gotcha” date and decided to read a lot into it. This was a meeting that was scheduled for August but had to be rescheduled, the Prez is not going to speak, and this appears to be a normal meeting.
And finally, I received a phone call this morning from a person that I consider my most trusted source – someone who knows all – and they told me point blank, that there is no invite from another league and that Clemson doesn’t expect to announce any sort of future plans by the end of football season (That was the date I asked about, as in is it imminent?).
I’ve been told that Clemson’s legal team is fully investigating all avenues towards the Grant of Rights, and that will be ongoing. Clemson is exploring all avenues and that will be ongoing. But right now, it looks as if most of the bandwidth is concentrated on ACC revenue distribution and the new schools and how all of that shakes out.
If something pops in the meantime? Great. But right now, it’s head down and proceed as if we are a long-term member of the league while also exploring any and every other avenue available. I’ve been on this since the beginning, and I trust my sources on this, so I hope you trust me now. I truly don’t expect anything to happen here in the next few weeks, but I will monitor it and let you know what I am hearing.

I can promise you Larry Williams isn’t just making this stuff up and lying. I have a subscription and I can assure you his reporting is very solid.
They’re just being told different things. So someone’s being lied to or is misinformed. Maybe intentionally (?) you never know what the administration and athletic department is up to behind closed doors. Maybe this is their way of leaking information so the ACC is willing to negotiate more?
Maybe I’m way off base when I’m saying they want this info leaked but just don’t bash Larry Williams or David Hood for reporting what they’re hearing when both are extremely good at what they do.

I could see that scenario being a very real. Leverage. And both could be true at the same time. Big announcements rarely happen in the middle of a season. Guess we'll all see what happens in the next few weeks.

I agree 100%. I have zero doubt Larry Williams and David Hood have been told two totally different things. Whether on purpose or otherwise I don't know. It is very possible their sources, regardless of their standing, may not be 100% in the "know." Very, very few within the administration and/or program will have all of the facts. Many will have partial bits but few the whole picture.

Really interesting how divergent some trusted Clemson media is on this.
Larry and Mickey, who are well connected, are talking like it’s a sure thing. Both are not generally sensationalist and are trustworthy.
David, who I tend to trust a bit more, says that they are wrong and nothing is happening. It’s an interesting split of information and informants.

Talk about a gut punch. Mickey Plyler sounds more confident about this than anything I’ve ever heard him talk about. He seems excited. I don’t have a TI sub anymore but I’ve seen where Larry Williams says the same as Plyler. Not sure why anyone would straight up lie to any of the 3.

David can you explain how or if the additions of Stan/ Cal/ SMU makes it more difficult for Clemson/ FSU or any others to leave the conference? I thought there was a certain number of schools that could come together and break the grant of rights contract, I'm not positive but I thought it was 6 or 7, and now with the additional schools that number becomes 7 or 8.

And for your efforts to sort facts from internet rumor.
I was hopeful, when I saw the report from the Charleston paper and listened to the guy who wrote it talk to Finebaum, that something had finally broken and Clemson and friends had found a path out of the ACC.
I'm still convinced that
1. They are working diligently.
2. A path will be found, just not as quickly as I was hoping.
A question for you. I don't put much stock in this statement: Clemson has not received an invitation from any other conference.
I would not expect that. I liken it to hiring a new HC. The AD of the hiring school and the potential HC have the following song and dance: If we were to offer you the job would you accept it.
I think the situation is something like this.
SEC: We can't offer you an invitation to join the SEC until you announce you are leaving the ACC.
Clemson: If we were to announce we are leaving the ACC would you offer us an invitation to join?
Meanwhile, lawyers from the schools that are leaving the ACC, the B1G, the SEC, ESPN and Fox are all meeting together to figure out a way that all sides prosper when the schools leave the ACC and head to the B1G or SEC.
Only after they figure out a way to do that will Clemson and friends announce they are leaving the ACC.
Then, the SEC and B1G can "truthfully" say, "We never poached the ACC. We did not offer them an invitation while they were still in the ACC."

These are good points. We're not going to "have an offer" before we leave the conference... or at least simultaneously. So, that's an easy thing to say to slow down the rumors without straight up lying about it.
Also, just because a good source is a good source, doesn't mean they are 100% aware of the current situation, which can dramatically change by the hour.

Somebody is lying to Hood or the others. I would never trust a source unless I had at least two more excellent sources to verify my "trusted" source. There's at least 6 people who know what is going on. And how many those people have told is unknown. So, there are going to be leaks. Guaranteed. And there are going to be "sources" sent out to lie and say that those leaks are untrue.

As the spokesperson for a Fortune 100 corporation, I was lied to by executives about something significant that was going on, because there were negotiations happening at a high level behind the scene.
They didn't want it out in the media. The media did their own investigation and had sources that contradicted what I told the media. In the end, I had been hung out to dry for lying, and my credibility was ruined.
So, I'm saying it's possible David's source is in my position, and the "rumor" could actually be the truth. The fact that Clemson has not issued a statement about this makes me lean more toward the leaving the ACC true.

The dead give away is the exact language with which they used to put DHood off the trail - "Clemson doesn’t EXPECT to announce". Noone expects to make an announcement unless it is alreadly scheduled, until then, they can say this all day long. It's call "plausible deniability".

I appreciate DavidHood®'s pure professionalism as well as the professionalism of Mr. H's sources in the Clemson family. Is it nonetheless possible that Sapakoff/Plyler/Williams' source(s) are from a conference or a school in another conference? That would explain the variance in the unannounced and therefore unconsummated break-up and new affiliation. Props to bretfsu® and others for thoughts and updates.
