Exactly, the kids that end up at schools like IMG aren't really about the word "Commitment" to begin with. I'm sure they got all kinds of people in their ear too.

flag link

Re: I don’t think they were even committed to him

[2]
Dec 10, 2021, 2:06 PM

Who is about the word commitment any more? Kids want to win, making NIL money, and get exposure to go to the NFL. They're going to go wherever offers them the best chance to do that. Everyone's been telling these kids that Venables is the best at developing defensive talent. He's gone now, and there's a ton of uncertainty around the Clemson football team right now, and silence from the coaches. Why would a talented kid want to hitch their wagon to a team in so much flux?

these kids are being bombarded on social media by players, fans, you name it. I looked at Jihaad Campbell's twitter page the day BV left and it had dozens of tweets begging him to come join ?????? at ????? and not stay at a place like Clemson which could not even keep good coaches. (Nevermind that we had virtually the same staff for 10 years). these kids are easily swayed and I am afraid there is a lot of money changing hands, both legal & illegal now that this NIL has come into play. Sad. Kids learn to be dishonest and lie at an early age and it becomes a way of life.

Re: TNET: Elite CB decommits from Clemson

Twitter aint nothing really. Go look at Instagram. That's where all these kids hang out. Its where you see all the other players (with their bluecheckmarks) telling each other to come to their school, and tagging other team mates to join in.

A few of these decommits like Daylan Everette are tagging other Clemson commits and telling them to leave too. Saying stuff like "@ come join us bruh."

Re: fact is most of the top tier guys

Dec 10, 2021, 12:50 PM

Totally agree. It will be frustrating to watch us lose top tier commits for a while but I don't blame kids for wanting to re-evaluate things when the equation has changed. Like you said, they were recruited by someone who is now gone, it's often more about the coach than the school. Hopefully we get things solved soon so we can stop the bleeding with recruit retention.

Where do you think they are getting those assumptions from, BV wasn't the CBs coach, he coached the LBs, and perfected the defensive scheme. Even though we loved to brag about having BV, but it was that type talent, and his assistant that made those guys who they were IMO!!!

2022 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link

Exactly

Dec 10, 2021, 1:23 PM

We attribute the decommitment to BV leaving because they happened after he left but I think that is a very small factor. They clearly were not all in to begin with.

flag link

Re: Exactly

Dec 10, 2021, 2:09 PM

All-In is no longer a thing, unless you want a bunch of 3 Stars who are committed. Today's football game is about $$$. If I were a 5 Star recruit, I wouldn't care about culture when I could commit elsewhere that appears more stable, and will give me a better shot at NIL money and the NFL. Why would a kid who's visited Clemson a couple times have any loyalty to the school? They want to succeed individually and value relationships with the people they know, and in our case, it's the coaches that were leaving.

Re: fact is most of the top tier guys

[3]
Dec 10, 2021, 1:10 PM

Nick Saban has a coaching carousel in Alabama yet he still has a top five recruiting class every year. He doesn’t lose recruits when coaches leave. Big difference between Alabama and Clemson and right now we’re seeing it. It’s going to be difficult for Clemson to rebound from this.

flag link

Re: fact is most of the top tier guys

Dec 10, 2021, 1:21 PM

Saban also brings in NFL or NCAA wash out coaches who are trying to reestablish their reputations…which can be good and bad…Look at the headache Kiffen was there…Sark was gone in less than a year…O’Brien will definitely be gone after the playoff run….

Two different motives behind that philosophy.

Reed was just with Covil along with Dabo and Bates. I’m not sure what’s going on but these guys were all committed to just Venables. What baffles me is how does Alabama change assistance every year and I see very little drop off in recruiting. As a matter fact I don’t remember seeing any De-commitments from big-time recruits when they have lost a coordinator. They definitely did not fall out of the top 10. I mean we’ve lost the entire top third of our recruiting class. I’ve tried to stay positive but this is not looking good. I don’t care what defensive coordinator we get. He will look bad with bad players.

This has little to do with IMG....

Alot of emotions on this board...& ppl are either too critical or they can't stand others making legit points on known issues.

Personally, jmo, I don't like the decision on the Co-DCs. I do think Goodwin is a rising star....but he has never been a position coach. I don't like the Conn hire....but its Dabo's call and I support it..Dabo has earned the benefit of the doubt. However, when you are selling top-end kids on a guy who "was" just an analyst and another guy very few schools would choose to get as a DC....other schools are going to NAIL YOU on it. I think the Co-DCs could've worked out great, but, again, JMO, its a bigger risk than say going out there to find a proven, experienced DC like we did with BV over a decade ago. Clemson is an elite brand and should be able to attract elite, DCs with years of proven results.

I don't have to like it jsebe10®, but gotta admit that I understand it.

This cuts both ways ... Clemson occasionally benefits from a recruited prospect who had committed to another school, but then opened it back up and reached out to Clemson again when the other school loses a HC or a key assistant coach.

I had hoped that if UNC had lost a few more games and Mack Brown got the boot early, that Travis Shaw would re-open his recruiting. If that had happened, then you could have bet your first borne child that Clemson would gladly have 'taken in' T.Shaw.

You know, once upon a time, I, like many others saw that Dabo, regardless of what natural abilities he may or may not have as an actual strategist, was an excellent manager of people and staff.
Perhaps he sees something in Goodwin and Conn that we have no way of seeing, but I agree with you that's something yet to be determined which isn't something that commits are too keen to gamble on. And while Conn was a very successful defensive minded HS coach, I would have liked to have seen us go after some decent Group of Five team or a one-sided Power Five program to poach a good DC the way BV did with the Ole Miss OC.
I like to think that initial take on Dabo is still valid and we are in perfectly good shape and all the discontent on this and other boards will be just that and not some harbinger of our demise. That being said, remember this, Chad Morris came to us two years or so out of High School and he fundamentally changed our program for the better, at least offensively.
Either way, I've been a Tiger fan my entire life and will continue to be so, come what may. I was in school during Tommy West's days and while he may have been loved by the players, we were not so good. In spite of that, I and everyone else survived it. We will survive this.
Go Tigers!

Re: imo....

Dec 11, 2021, 7:49 AM

Disagree, Dabo was an out of the box hire, and when he promoted Tony to PLay Caller Offensive Coordinator, it was not a popular move after losing Chad Morris. But Tony Learned from Morris and tweaked the philosophy and made it his own. (even More Successful I might add). Now He will do the same with promoting within. The Clemson Systems have worked under TE and BV. The coaches taking over have been on this staff learning from both. The offense/defense will run the same schemes and with minor adjustments and they will be just as successful. This years recruiting class may or may not suffer with the coaching changes, but the thing to remember is we have a very young team and we have starters at almost every position returning. Most even for the next 2 years. Dabo is in a good place and Clemson is still Clemson. Next year a healthy Clemson is going to be very hard to beat and should challenge for a national championship. Dabo has always said he has been training and evaluating this staff to replace both coordinators, because he isn't dumb he knew this day would come. Let the world doubt, they will do so at their own peril. Clemson will bounce back and challenge Bama for CFB supremacy 2022.

I have faith in Dabo to turn this around but, right now the optics don't look good. Here is the problem I have with the whole situation....Brent Venables has every right to do what makes him happy and to do what he needs to do for himself and family, I have no problem with that.

Where I do have a problem is when he is out a recruiting all week to the end of that week telling these kids how great it is here at clemson and how he will mold him and were all in hear at clemson... blah...blah...blah.. and then a few days later he can't get out of town fast enough?? He knew while on that recruiting trip I think it was in texas that the Mrs. and boys were home packing getting ready to go to Oklahoma...

THATS WRONG!!! Should have been upfront and honest with DABO so that would have never happened!!! Brian Kelly did the same thing he was at a recruits home gorging himself eating 3 helping of homemade BBQ the dad prepared telling this kid and family all the wonderful things about ND, then gets a phone call while at the visit and leaves immediately. A few hours later the family see's a headline from Twitter that Kelley is the new HC at LSU....That's BS!!

This leaves a bad taste in these kids and their families mouth. I agree with DABO in the fact he don't like where college football is today and where its heading. These coaches again have the right to leave but, do it in an honorable and respectful way where it don't hurt the school you have just left. I guess that is just way too much to ask for in the world we live in today....everything is all about & centered around me...

Who didnt know this was about to happen? I said it yesterday. Now that the IMG academy kids are out the way, we can now focus on what we have left, 4 star Pride, Covil, lukus, Kanak and 3 Star Woodaz on defense. We still can have a top 10 class even with all the failures so far. I am sure we will pick up some more 4 and maybe 5 stars by February. We need to go after DJ Wesolak. We laid off of him when Campbell committed. Again, Dabo needs to announce the DC immediately and it needs to be a big name to keep what we have left. I cannot remember las when Clemson had 3 decommits in one year.

targets? This is about more than just this class. None of these guys were starting coming in next year. They may have played, but they werent starting.

Hire whoever continues a dominant defense, in house or out. We have plenty of returning talent on defense to excel next season

Dec 10, 2021, 3:45 PM

I think Everett may have started with Booth and Goodrich gone.

2023 will look much different though, and not in a good way.

I agree you get the right guy but to suggest these decommits don’t adversely impact this program is folly.

Re: Maybe but - got fine class if T.Pride and J.Lukas stay

Dec 10, 2021, 8:41 PM

Sure, losing Sabb and Everett hurt the DB class, but if Toriano Pride and Jaedyn Lukas stay, then we will have important depth which will indeed play next year.

Losing Sabb and Everett is not some sign of the apocalypse.

Seems like Clemson has had more de-commits this past week than the last 10 years..if this isn't the sign of the ME ME generation then I don't know what is. Y'all kids do what's best for you, as we see that's all y'all are worried about doing, while proving your word means nothing. Y'all are making it easier and easier for me to care less about college football anymore and sure won't be cheering for ya

Guys, these cats are just following each other. What are the odds that three players decommit and they are all from the same school, 3 days in a row? I bet we may have lost only Saab if they were all still at the high school they originally drcommitted from…

There are 11 other guys that have gone nowhere but three from the same school? #Whatchagonnado

I believe we will hold onto everyone else.

College football is big business which is sad because

[1]
Dec 10, 2021, 3:53 PM

you no longer go to a school because you like the school, it's offerings and it's opportunities as a whole but because it's what's the best road to the NFL. Not to be naïve- it's always had that flavor but what used to be a process which ended in the exchange of words between two honorable parties has become like making a reservation at a hotel years ago-it often would not cost you anything. However, if you cancel, you often deprive other guests that could have come the opportunity, and you took away business while the hotel overhead still goes on. You have every right to do so and things do change and come up. And hotels have often changed their policies. Mostly now, you at least put a deposit down which is non refundable if not cancelled within a certain time frame. It will cost you. That's just the way it is.

For a coach to pull an offer for no apparent reasons is almost unheard of. The PR would be a nightmare so it is a gate that does not swing both ways. Athletes can decommit (rather I was not committed in the first place) and if they don't like their playing time for any reason they transfer. There are cases where it absolutely makes sense for a student athlete so I'm not painting with too wide a brush.

Don't be surprised if at some point in the future the NCAA doesn't try to recapture the monster it has released. How? Who knows as it is likely to late in this day and time of touchy feely political correctness. We all knew this was coming. I just don't think we had any idea what it would really be like when it got here. We now have a revolving door business model which, reluctantly, we will have to join in. Like the AZ Diamondbacks did years ago, you go buy yourself a team for a year, win the World series, sell them off and enjoy the profits while painfully rebuilding. It's not a far stretch to see this current system evolving into that kind of scenario.

I guess it's a grieving process for a time where student athletes and a university could trust in each other(depending on the coach and we have the best) and had the word "team" as a real understanding. Now, it about "me" no matter what and again that's not counting those who transfer for a good reason.
This is just a wake up call to the reality of the present. I don't know what Saban does but we are about to see how our program stacks up. I do believe it will be every bit as good minus the fact that not many decommit from AL.

In all honesty, it's hard to feel objective when the school you love and support-which in my case has roots that go back into the late 40"s with family-and not feel resentment and anger. The process just spit in the face of the ideals Clemson has adhered to with few exceptions and so accordingly it becomes personal as it spit in your face as well.

As Tiger Woods once said in an interview about his nefarious behavior "It is what it is". Very true words but being the "what it is" exacted a high price. I suspect that the high price in the current situations has already had the beginnings of formulation in some minds which could be ugly and visible only behind the scenes. We have to remember these are just kids. Unfortunately the system can evolve, and arguably has, to where it no longer cares. The gate might not swing both ways but sadly the knife cuts on both sides.

Very thoughtful post Watcher®.

Since the Supreme Court decided (did Kavanaugh write the opinion?) correctly (IMO) that student athletes get to make money (working side jobs or NIL money), the historical college sports / scholarship model has been irreversibly changed.

The only way that I can see the 'genie going back into the lamp' is if the NCAA is allowed to have a legal binding contract which for their sanctioned sports leagues can require (and enforce) amateur status for all of the student athletes, and which is enforced uniformly regardless of the student athletes' background &/or demographic category &/or gender.

(?) Would the Supreme Court allow for a contractually enforceable 'amateur athletes only' to be a legal entity? If not, then the vortex of college sports going down the porta-potty will only accelerate ... ironically to the detriment of most of the college athletes (since a much larger percentage will neither get a professional sports job nor get their college education ... and will go back to their home-towns and end up doing menial jobs (or worse).

But at the end of the day, I suspect that the Supreme Court will rule that a person should have the freedom to make stupid decisions or their choice, as opposed to having 'big brother' save them from themselves. For sure, the college 'student' athlete who is over 18 years of age (can vote and go to war) will be given that freedom to make stupid decisions of their choice.

We'll see.
