Throw Deep? DJ was barely throwing at all towards the end of the season. At least not in critical situations that is.

I have to disagree with Coach Richardson on his statement “we didn’t have the personnel to throw the ball downfield”. We had Justin Ross. It should be we didn’t have the QB to accurately throw it downfield.

If you notice, coach talked about not having an effective run game and an effective screen game. The personnel that we were lacking, which was eluded to in the article, was the personnel that opens up downfield throws. Nobody respected our running game early in the season. And we didn't have a quick twitch, fast WR that was effective in the screen game. That allowed defenses to play back and take away downfield throws. You can't take shots when everyone plays two-man and Cover 4. And unless you can keep them honest, they'll stay in those packages all game.

We couldn't keep them honest. Then the injuries piled up and DJ was left throwing to freshmen and Will Swinney.

Ross was playing through injury most of the season. He was nowhere near the threat he was in his freshman season.

Hey DJ had his problems last season, and I don't think there is a Tiger in Tiger nation that would try and argue that point, but play calling, and receivers stinking it up by dropping balls they had in grasp, or balls bouncing off their chest, face mask, or out of their hands with passes that DJ did throw on target, that was a story line of our last season also...

The absolute truth of our 2021 season, we could have just as easily been a 5-8 team last season with seconds left on the clock in 5 games we won that our D stood up saved our butts in those 5 games starting with Georgia Tech, a critical stop by Skalski SAVED US from GT's threat with a 4th and Goal with 19 seconds left on the game clock, could have been an OT game that we could have lost... https://www.tigernet.com/clemson-football/story/tigers-hang-on-for-dear-life-in-sluggish-delayed-close-call-over-tech-19911

BC in the Valley, BC fumbles on our 11 YdL with 49 seconds left in the game. BC could have just easily won if not for KJ Henry's fumble recovery... https://www.tigernet.com/clemson-football/story/clemson-defense-holds-on-late-as-tigers-top-eagles-in-gutty-thriller-19961

Syracuse in the dome, Cuse missed a 48 yard FG to tie the game with 38 seconds left in the game. Could have been another OT game with the win jeopardy... https://www.tigernet.com/clemson-football/story/tigers-hold-on-as-syracuse-rally-goes-wide-left-in-carrier-dome-19993

louisville, we barely escaped a loss in that game with Red Birds threatening to score that would have game them a 1 point win if not for our D standing tall and stopping them in what looked to have been an easy scoring position for them with 1st and Goal at our 3 YdL, but our D laid it all on the line forcing the Birds to turn the ball over on downs. Our has another impressive stand that won that game for the team!!! https://www.tigernet.com/clemson-football/story/defense-stops-louisville-on-late-goal-line-stand-as-tigers-escape-with-win-20065

Iowa in the bowl game, again our D takes the ball away from Iowa on a 4th and 2 from at their 36 with only 39 seconds left, and Goodrich causes Iowa QB to fumble the behind their line of scrimmage, and we take over the ball and run the clock out. We win 20-13 that could have been another OT game, and a chance of us losing the game, but again our D saves the day with a turn over on downs.

There was those 5 wins that went down to seconds of us winning or losing, and if not for our D, we just as easily could have been a 5-8 team, but bc of our Defense, we ended the season 10-3 without ever being mentioned for the playoffs for the first time since 2015!!!

Our QB and receivers will have to be much improved in 2022 for us to have a chance to be in playoff contention this coming season. If we're not much better at those position, 2022 may be the last time we have a chance to win a National Champion until somebody comes up with a plan to make the NIL fair to all D-1 teams. If that doesn't happen by the end of 2022, 2022 could very well be the end of college sports the way that's been for all of lives bc, with the unfair advantage the big schools, in big cities will have over smaller schools in small cities or towns, or big schools in a smaller NIL class, all those will be forced to fold up without the opportunity to generate NIL contracted money that it will take to keep everybody competitive on the same level for attracting the big time college players that has kept the smaller schools in smaller communities competitive since the late 1800s!!!

DJ is the starter for now, and if he shows poor QB play early, Dabo will have to react the same as he did with DW4, and TL16. It's a must react quicker this time bc, with the NIL rules the way they are right now, we may not have another chance to compete for another Natty until after some serious reaction from the NCAA to level the NIL playing field for all teams. If nothing is done to level the NIL playing for every D1 power 5 schools, it will end anything close to a power 5 team for a lot of teams that's considered to be a power 5 team right now. And it's schools like Texas that's going to lead the way of tearing down what we know as a power 5 team!!!

Thanks Zee, but I'm not going to worry about T-Netters TU-ing a post of mine to being a POTD post. I got a 1 or 2 in my early days on T-Net but, I'm opinionated, and blunt with stating whatever is on my mind, and most T-Netters either don't like that, or can't handle that part about me.

I really don't care one way or the other bc, I never have, and I never tried to be somebody that I'm not, or what others may think I should be. I'm exactly who I am on here, as I am in person, I don't beat around the bush, and I'll tell it the way that see it, right or wrong, and I've gotten to old now to even think about changing my character to be softer, or not so blunt!!! At least folks don't have to wonder about what I've said bc, I try to make myself pretty clear straight out the box, and I honestly don't try to offend anyone, and if I do, I truly hope they will find a way to get over it....;)

I think the powers that be AOATT in the NCAA want to show all the people who fought them, "how wrong they were"!

My way or the highway mentality instead of some sort of arrangement that works for players, schools and the NCAA. All speculation and assumption on my part obviously! But, it seems to me with the way they are sitting back and doing nothing they are waiting for it to blow up and get smaller schools "to see it their way"!
In their mind; "I imagine", they told everyone what would happen if it ever happened: "but they need to not just say it anymore; they have to show people the chaos that is caused. Just my two pennies; but I feel one day some official will go on some tv show or write a tell-all book saying something similar to what I am saying.

I was alerting the board to this before last season, and during.

Our personnel, especially at WR, was not conducive for an effective downfield passing game. Sure, we had dudes like Ross, Ngata, Ladson, and EJ. You'd expect us to hit some shots. But, teams played two high safeties and took that away from us. The response is to be effective in the screen game and underneath throws in one on one coverage.

We didn't have a single WR that was a threat in either aspect of the passing game. And I'm worried that hold true this year also. Spector, Stellato, Taylor, and Williams are really the only threats we have in the quick passing game. But, one hasn't played in over a year and the other three haven't played meaningful snaps as a collegiate WR.

I really can't see much changing if we trot out there with Ngata, EJ, Beaux, and Dacari. They are all the same type of WR, and none of them can excel in the underneath game.

Spector is probably the 'X' factor for this offense. And that just sounds scary.

DJU is QB 1..............until proven otherwise......but

Apr 26, 2022, 10:06 PM

As has been suggested already; I agree, if DJU comes out and looks like a 3 star QB instead of the highly rated player he appeared to be his freshman year - you must get the young freshman the reigns! Why? Because, he will have all kinds of people in his ear telling him how he's being wronged and how the Texas schools could NIL him. But instead, he is playing behind someone that's starting "just out of loyalty"! Not that I believe that would be why DJU would remain the starter, you understand.
If he did; it would be because the coaches felt the other QB's aren't ready to even do what DJU is doing yet. They are at practice and I trust that they know better than anyone.
But, that will be what's being whispered and posted all over.

Solid at least to great Offensive line play would help things out a ton. That goes w/o saying, but if you can get some 3rd and short going consistently DJU won't have so much pressure on him to be "great all the time"! He will just have to be a game manager and make the simple, designed throws to get another set of downs. If he is at least a game manager and doesn't hurt us by turning the ball over and by not missing wide open easy for a kid that practices football for a hobby should be able to make routinely. If he can at least do that and the running game is above par - Clemson has a more than good chance to be ACC champions at least!
He would have to be more of a play-maker against stiffer competition. But, that only applies to a handful of teams in the country! Yes, ones we would meet in the playoffs if we were to get there. But, goodness, he needs to at least be a game manager! I think he can do it no doubt and knowing Coach Richardsons work with QB's he is likely to have DJU in a much better place by the 1st game of the season. His track record is very good with QB's and I have to think him being an on the field coach is going to get the best out of DJU.

We could have had Hopkins, Watkins, Renfrow and Odell Beckham out there and it wouldn't have mattered much with the missed reads and dump passes 10 yards over their head.

It wasn't our best WR corp ever, by a long shot, but they weren't the weakest link.

Then why did Tajh excel in our offense? He was very inaccurate.

Give Tajh Boyd Beaux Collins, Dacari Collins, and Will Swinney at WR and I bet Clemson doesn't make a bowl game in 2011.

It was much, much more predictable last season. We can debate whether it was calling the game to the talent, or a coaching staff revealing their limitations (I believe it's a combination of both), but a one-dimensional (that's being generous) QB running only a handful of plays ineffectively gets us what we saw last season.

Tajh was inaccurate but he had far better pocket awareness, scrambling and running ability, and decision-making on zone reads than DJ ever did. He made defenses have to pretend to be honest.

The coach calling the offense last year is currently at UVA. The coach calling the offense in 2011 is currently a high school coach.

Let's debate personnel though. Maybe that was the indication.

2011 WRs: Nuk Hopkins, Sammy Watkins, Jaron Brown, Adam Humphries, Martavis Bryant, Charone Peake, Marquan Jones, Bryce McNeal, Joe Craig

2021 WRs: Justyn Ross, Beaux Collins, Dacari Collins, EJ Williams, Will Swinney, Ajou Ajou, Frank Ladson, Will Brown, Troy Stellato

2011 TE: Dwayne Allen

2022 TE: Davis Allen

One of these lists is not like the other.

LeonTrotsky®I believe your points are valid with a highly inaccurate starting QB ... our only 2021 option due to a lack of recruiting.

IMHO an accurate QB changes your premise that Clemson cannot succeed in the passing game with two deep coverage. This is where Cade comes in. It will take a few games for him to acclimate to the playbook and the personnel, but EJ, Beaux and others can catch the rock when thrown in their direction. Hopefully, we will all see WR health improve this season, though I believe WR interest in catching consistently errant passes clearly diminishes when WR's weigh the risk of injury vs. the opportunity to catch a ball. Tigers finished strong in 2021, and 2022 is another exciting opportunity!

Smart fans understood that last year we had no deep threat because of injuries and no pas protection because of injuries on the line. I am not sure we have any speed yet but hopefully our line will be better. A running game is the key and we should be better in that area.

Couldn't agree more. Watching the Spring game matchups on the line of scrimmage (an unknown OL talent against a DL with a known talent level) showed the depth is a work in progress as is the center position. Putnam struggled - hoping by the fall that Linthicum can move past as there might be some upside with more reps. Leigh and Blake Miller are not ready to start at LT leaving McFadden playing out of position at only 6'2". Still, a QB can offset a lot of issues. Charlie Whitehurst won a bunch of games with a very limited supporting cast and we have seen Trevor and DW carry a team with some holes on many occasions. Klubnik will need to be that equalizer that can overcome with a mediocre supporting cast.

I guess that I disagree with Coach Richardson. Sometimes you just have to force the issue. Pick your situations, but DJ could throw it farther than Spiers could punt it. Ajou couldn't block and his route running was suspect but he was a freak athlete. Throw it up and see who gets it. Randy Moss turned Dante Culpepper into an All Pro doing that. We weren't successful throwing deep, because of not trying as much as anything.

The way Richardson is talking, it sounds like the offense is going to be as vanilla as it was last year. If it is, then we only go as far as our defense can take us.

It'll be SSDD, if we do. We need an OL that can give our QB some time, and a QB who can consistently put the ball in the right spot for receivers to get it. And, the receivers need to actually catch the ball when they get the chance. Pretty big "ifs", but nobody said this would be easy.

our successful downfield passing game has always been.

1) That deadly downfield receiver, who, when give a "one on one" situation, will catch those "50/50" balls 90% of the time, and defend them the other 10% of the time.

2) We, for sure last year, lacked the QB who could THROW those downfield "50/50" balls anywhere close to our receivers, giving them a CHANCE to catch them, or even defend them.

We have a second option at QB this year, so, I believe Dabo will pull the trigger on a QB change if DJ struggles out of the gate this year, like he did for nearly ALL of last year.

We even have a "dark horse" in Hunter Johnson, who may wind up playing a bigger role than we think right now. Options, it is ALWAYS good to have options.
