Per Korncoot.

Is he a 3* or 4*?

Feb 7, 2015, 1:55 PM

It may be important.

Re: Is he a 3* or 4*?

Feb 7, 2015, 1:59 PM

His star rating is irrelevant because of his academic uncertainty. Yahoo has him at 6-1 195 4.46 40 yard dash and a 2 star.

But is he good at sports?***

910 yards receiving, 60 tackles and 8 PBUs sounds like an athlete to me.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Okay, I'm on board

Feb 7, 2015, 2:59 PM

Go ahead and help him cheat on this ACT test and lets get him in here. Or is that just a UNC thing?

I know this may sound mean but with the guys we have a chance with next year and the numbers being tight we should not take this guy

I'm guessing the coaches think we don't keep Muse.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hmmm, interesting

Feb 7, 2015, 2:46 PM [ in reply to Re: Tigers could still get Johnson ]

But I think I'll choose to agree with our University employees whose literal job is to scout players and evaluate talent that fills needs, something they have been doing since these players were in 9th grade or younger.

Thanks for your opinion though. I always get a good laugh when people on this board think they know what the #### they are talking about with recruiting.

Re: Hmmm, interesting

Feb 7, 2015, 3:02 PM

Give him a blueshirt
The practice of “over-signing” in the sport of NCAA Division I football has been around for a long time. However, until recently, colleges often worked through those over-signings by convincing a high school athlete to start out at a junior college and then transfer later on, or to delay their enrollment for a semester (“gray shirt”).
The “blue shirt” approach is basically the same as a “gray shirt” with one very significant difference. Whereas a gray shirt athlete is delaying their enrollment at the university until the Spring semester, a “blue shirt” will enroll in the Fall, and attend as a walk-on athlete without a scholarship for at least the first semester.
This will allow them to participate in practices, and perhaps even play in games as a true freshman, and then get a scholarship later on. As a walk-on during at least the first semester, they will postpone counting as an “initial counter” until the following academic year. In addition, if they come in as a non-recruited walk-on, this may present some advantages as well if they will be receiving non-athletic scholarships such as academic scholarships, or legacy scholarships.

Re: Hmmm, interesting

Feb 7, 2015, 5:17 PM

He still has to meet NCAA requirements to play, whether he walks on or is on scholarship. You can qualify without high school grades or ACT scores by performing adequately in college (or JC).

But the ACC has a special rule: if he were to enroll at an ACC school before qualifying and then qualify later (by making passing grades in college), he can never play at that or any other ACC school. The SEC, I believe, allows only two athletes per year (across all sports) in that situation. Don't understand the logic behind the rule.

But that's why prep school and JC are so important.

Everybody I've talked to says he's legit, and potentially big-time. He's a 4-star, easily, in terms of athletic ability, whatever he's "rated". The problem was until recently he was not even remotely close to qualifying so he was largely overlooked.

I dunno if he was in the Shrine Bowl, but every year it seems you see 2-3 of these guys, guys who are just standing out but maybe have 1 offer to Memphis or ECU or some such and leave you scratching your head going: "Why didn't anybody offer this guy? Why aren't any of the services tracking him?" And the reason is usually grades.

You also usually don't see them again, unfortunately. I suspect this is a very optimistic article. If Johnson makes it in I'd personally be surprised, but if he can somehow work the miracle he needs he's also a take all the way because the guy can definitely ball.

What allowed resources does a kid have to help him improve

Feb 7, 2015, 2:46 PM

his SAT? I bought a GMAT prep software and increased my score 100+ points.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My company does SAT prep

Feb 7, 2015, 3:00 PM

Our average score increase is 312 points. It's an easy test to improve upon, as it doesn't change much year to year. Minus it getting a complete overhaul every 10 years or so.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Can someone point this kid towards these resources w/out

Feb 7, 2015, 3:06 PM

becoming a violation? Forget Clemson, help the kid get into school...and others. The practice software helped me so much I felt like I was a cheater =)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, I've helped kids get into Clemson before

Feb 7, 2015, 4:00 PM

I openly tell kids it's the greatest place on Earth. Anyone can refer him to a prep center.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Off topic - but I would appreciate a private reference to

Your co - PT and the software TO - have a son taking both ACT and SAT now that could use the boost.

Tmail me?

Make it a public reference- thosed prep courses/software

Feb 7, 2015, 7:40 PM

are really worth every penny. The GMAT is for grad school. You just want the other, right?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree

Feb 7, 2015, 7:50 PM

I got a tutor for the act and it brought it up by 6 points (which equals about 250 sat points)

Brad Brownell: more losses than any other coach in school history.

That's a nice increase

Feb 8, 2015, 6:33 PM

But make no mistake about it, you worked hard for those 6 pts. The hardest working kids increase the most, no matter what program you're talking about.

on what happens from that.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Do you thing the act of buying the software helped

Feb 7, 2015, 6:32 PM [ in reply to What allowed resources does a kid have to help him improve ]

your score, or did you study with the software and the act of studying helped your score?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think the rote rehearsal(?) in itself made it easier. It

Feb 7, 2015, 7:42 PM

definitely helped though. Know how we've grown *yawn* comfy with 10-win seasons now? Like that =)

take it upon himself to state in his article that it would upgrade Clemson's 2015 class if he makes it through, which speaks to the quality of the player. Instead his boss had to do it.
