A local county government had a ransom attack
May 11, 2021, 8:16 AM

All County records, computer systems, electronics... were down for almost 2 months. County personnel had to set up gmail accounts. All because someone clicked something that they shouldn't have. Knowing them, they probably paid the ransom.
Happened to a local Chinese owned industry also. All IT was wiped and they started over.
If you own a large or small business, you might better be prepared with backups.

a ransomware attack in our small office. I can't blame him. He had bought an airline ticket and shortly after received an email with an airline ticket attached. Unfortunately, it wasn't the one he had ordered. Nevertheless, his computer files were encrypted overnight and the ransomware then started in on our servers.
Thankfully, we caught it early the next morning before it encrypted extremely important files. And, thankfully, we had redundant server backups and were back up and running within 4 hours. Unfortunately, his computer was a complete loss, though. We refused to pay the ransomware since we had backups and the majority of the files he needed were on the file and email servers.
My advice:
1. Don't open attachments to emails unless you are 100% sure you should be receiving it and you know 100% that it is from a legitimate email address. Remember these criminals can spoof email names and make you think it is from a legitimate person or friend.
2. Hover over any link in an email to make sure it matches where it is supposedly trying to send you. If you are still leery of the link, type the real web address into your browser, especially if it claims to be from a bank, credit card company, or online merchant.
3. KEEP YOUR OS (Windows, MacOS, iOS, Android, etc.) AND BROWSERS (Chrome, MS Edge, Safari, Firefox, etc.) UPDATED!!!
4. Keep your mobile apps updated. Check daily.
5. Do not plug any USB drive into your computer unless it has been scanned by a reputable malware/virus scanner. There are free ones out there that do a good job of catching malware/computer viruses. Examples: Windows Security (free with Windows OS and is updated several times during the day. It allows for paid cloud storage in the event of a ransomware attack; a certain storage amount is free with a MS account), MalwareBytes (scans for malware and root kits; the free version requires you to manually scan. I try to do that once a week). There are several others, but these are the ones I use. Norton is probably better than when I started. It was a memory hog back then.
6. Use cloud storage and external hard drives for backups of your important files. External hard drives are relatively inexpensive and compact now.
These are legitimate email phishing tests: 1. https://www.hotcleaner.com/how-to-spot-and-avoid-phishing-scams.html 2. https://www.phishingbox.com/phishing-test
Just my two cents.

But that same exact scenario happened in GA...guy and his wife or girlfriend were standing beside the car while filling up...he was trying to scare her by clicking his lighter around the nozzle while it was in the car...ignited a little flame...he panicked and yanked the nozzle out, dousing her with burning fuel. I don’t think she survived. People are way too cavalier around gas pumps.

Ransomware Cyber attack on Colonial Pipeline shut down flow of gas to most of southeast delivery points. Russian hackers believed to be responsible.

Morons at the pump filling up his car AND 8 gas cans.
Stop topping off. Stop panic buying gas. You're the problem.
Take a look at the mirror if you're doing this and stop blaming others.

Another TP situation.
People being stupid and rushing out to top off their tanks all at once. Plenty of gas in storage and lines are slowly coming back up. Media will cause the situation to be worse though as usual.

I filled up 3 of my vehicles and also a 55 gallon drum to keep just in case.
If not for buying off the older lady in front of me by bartering a 24 roll of charmin triple ply, I’m not sure I could have gotten the 55 gallon drum completely full

Trump 2024! Let's go back to your supreme leader who really put the country above himself. Wasn't he the only president in history to be impeached twice? Amazing that you cult followers are still drinking the kool aid.

Or Any Party but Democrat.. at least this new version democrat.. They're just too far out in the looney bin.... Trump was kinda looney too i'll agree but he was very good at running an economy and doing it efficiently. He knocked it out of the park on cleaning up immigration, unnecessary foreign expenditures, dealing with bad actors abroad, creating and maintaining American industry, and getting our Military what it needed to be top of the food chain again... he did alot of really vital things that have been waning for years...
What He struggled with was coddling personalities and his knack for being flippant with his words. Now had he sucked at all the stuff previously mentioned then i'd be on board with you but...he didn't.
Shutting down the oil industry to promote a theoretical ideology is crazy stuff.. Promoting our country as a racist nation above all else is crazy stuff... Paying people more money to stay home than to work a job is crazy stuff.... Opening up the border to let any and everyone in that can walk is crazy stuff... Constantly threatening states to close down for a waning pandemic is crazy stuff (keep safety measures in place is fine but not shutting everything down)....Threatening to remove the 2nd Amendment is crazy stuff... threatening to add states that only account for more progressive votes/senators is crazy stuff...Flooding the SCOTUS to overthrow the rule of law is Crazy Stuff... Changing voting laws to allow mail in all year long voting is Crazy Stuff..........I mean.. and this is only 6 months in...
Man i'd vote for just about anything other than what we have now. This new group will have us folded up here in about a year. When they're done it will be really hard to dig ourselves out of this mess..if at all. You gotta quick being loyal to a party and be more about what works and what hurts.

In theory I agree with your sentiments... However, the problem with hunting down these cyber criminals is that they are located in foreign countries with most being shielded (if not actively supported) by those Governments. This particular Darkside ransomeware group is located in Russia and since Putin ain't gonna lift one finger to stop them and the US doesn't have the balls to send in a covert team to whack them, you can fully expect this group to continue their hijacking of vulnerable systems.
At some point corporate America has to stop paying lip service to protecting their networks and actually take Draconian measures to lock down access to their critical systems. By the way - does anyone find it troubling that a ransomeware attack that comes in through the Internet can somehow burrow deep enough into Colonial Pipeline's infrastructure to actually stop the pipeline from pumping gas?? Whatever happened to manual over-rides and air-gaping critical infrastructure??
