Thoughts on the season

Every team must fight through injuries every year. We've seen some great programs really suffer this year after losing their ace starter or reliever. With only 11.7 scholarships and a 35 man roster and a 3 year career path for many, I believe that injuries to key scholarship players is more damaging in baseball than any other sport. After the recruiting was over last year (about 1/2 way into our season), we lost a great defensive/offensive SS due to a shoulder surgery. Tyler Krieger's shoulder has still not recovered. Half way into this season we lost our starting 2nd baseman, Chase Pinder. Eli White would have been a great 2nd baseman, but he had to be used at SS because Tyler Krieger was injured. Eli White was rated the 3rd best SS in SC when he came out of high school, but unfortunately the 3rd best high school SS in SC is typically a 2nd baseman or outfielder at an ACC level. Drew Moyer was tapped to be a closer for us this season, and very early in the season he was injured. Jake Long our #3 starter missed the first half of the season due to injury. Most of the criticism of Coach Leggett that I've read revolves around: middle infield errors, relief pitching, and inconsistent #3 and mid week starters. All areas where injuries have bit us. The interesting thing is that we appear to have overcome most of those injury issues. Jake is back. Vetzel & Krall are getting it done out of the pen. Eli needs only to learn to trust his arm and not rush his throws. If he takes time to stop and plant, he's got a big enough arm to gun the runner. His arm strength and his throw accuracy is good when he slows down. Those adjustments just take time and confidence. The further we go in this thing, the more time Krieger's shoulder is going to have to recover. We really are a much improved team over the past 2 months, we continue to improve. I really believe that we are in a good spot.

Over the last two months of the saeson, Clemson is a mediocre 19 - 14 with losses to Presbyterian College, Charleston Southern, Georgia Southerm and a blow-out loss to Wofford. I won't even get into the 15 runs the pitching staff surrendered in a 23 - 15 slugfest against Furman. The ONLY thing that made the last two months of the season even remotely palatable was the three game sweep of FSU in Tallahassee and the tournament win against Louisville. Is it fair to say this team has shown some signs of improvement? Yes! (The team is 8 - 3 in its last eleven games). Are they still unbelievably inconsistent. Absolutely!

baseball is by nature an inconsistent game

The KC Royals, who are ranked by most media as the best pitching staff in the major leagues, and by many as the best team in baseball, gave up 11 runs in one inning to the Yankees on Monday. How do you explain that? Heck, they got swept by the Yankees, explain that. Even stranger, why are the KC Royals a better team than the Yankees currently, given those two teams' resources? It's baseball.
The best fielding teams can have a 4-error game. A .350 hitter will have a 8-game hitless streak from time to time. A Cy Young pitcher gets shelled every so often. It's always been that way, and it will never change.
I agree that the LEVEL of inconsistency is the factor that needs to improve with Clemson baseball. It's OK to lose a game to a Furman or Wofford level team from time to time, everybody does - just not 4 of them.
There's a very fine line between great and good, and good and average in the game of baseball.

that last year four #3 seeds and one #4 seed advanced to Super-Regionals.
Parity is at an all time high in college baseball. Last year was the fewest national seeds to advance to the CWS ever. It was also the first trip for Texas Tech, the second trip for Vandy, UC Irvine and TCU, the third trip for Louisville and Virginia. It's just a much more competitive sport than it was 20 years ago.

This thread about Clemson baseball is way too reasonable for Tigernet. Please move it elsewhere.

I think you're spot on in your assessment. Seems to me that Eli has a bad habit of double clutching before throwing to first. He then has to really gun it to beat the runner which certainly cuts down on accuracy. That should be fixable. A great fielding first baseman will save a lot of errors on poor throws. Cox is getting better but he's missed a few that could have been caught. I think Batson is the better fielder but his bat has really gone cold. If his batting would improve I think he'd be the best option at first. He's also a hell of a third baseman. Hope he can get his swing fixed soon.
Thanks for your posts. They are well thought out and positive. Something that is often lacking on TigerNet.
